Do you use two wallets, one cold wallet for storage that never connects to uni; and a hot wallet for small transactions? This would protect against a fat finger losing everything from the first wallet.
@IanMajor10 ай бұрын
I'd personally split my long-term savings across multiple cold wallets to mitigate risk of having everything on one wallet. And then I'd use a hot wallet for everyday "spending money"

Do you recommend on Amazon buying the protection for each or any of the parts? Runs the bill up. Thanks.

The wallet on umbrel is completely separate from my wallet on Trezor, right? Thanks.
@IanMajor Жыл бұрын
That’s right - think of a bitcoin node really as a node and wallet in one, and that wallet is going to be separate from others that you use. With that said, you can connect your node to other wallets so that you’re not trusting someone else’s node to fetch information for you about the blockchain or to broadcast your transactions to the network

Will a 4GB Raspberry Pi work okay? The 8GB is pretty much impossible to find at most places that isn’t overpriced with the processor shortage. Even the 4GB version is hard to find now
@IanMajor2 жыл бұрын
Yea it's crazy right now.. 4GB should be fine though and meets the minimum requirements for running a node.
@bluemorpho77782 жыл бұрын
@@IanMajor Seriously though, hoping the processor shortage starts to improve sometime soon hopefully. It’s been a pain in the ass looking for a Raspberry and PS5 haha. Good to know that a 4GB will work too, thanks a ton!

Can you do a video about the profitability of the raspory pi node
@IanMajor2 жыл бұрын
Hey my friend - could you clarify a bit? The main goal of a node such as this isn't profit but rather the ability to validate and broadcast your own trxns to the Bitcoin network and also help promote decentralization of the system. Now of course with Umbrel you also get a LIghtning node which you could set up as a routing node and in theory make a little bit of profit - is that what you're referring to? Otherwise, you might be referring to Bitcoin miners which are a very different beast. I've done a video here you might want to check out regarding some profitability for miners: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ7Vh5eliLNmeLM Hope this helps!

You can use a HDD though be aware the sync will likely be significant slower (potentially a couple weeks depending on different factors)

It's near impossible to get a Raspberry Pi 4! If you can they are so expensive. I can't wait to get my node up and running, but I think I'm going to have to wait, thanks for the great video.
@IanMajor2 жыл бұрын
I've been hearing this from quite a few folks... there definitely are some alternative single-board computers (e.g. here www.zdnet.com/article/best-raspberry-pi-alternative/) but I'm not so sure what the potential compatibility would be. Technically you can run Umbrel on anything running Debian or Ubuntu (github.com/getumbrel/umbrel#installing-umbrel), but that would certainly require some more technical know-how. There are also pre-packaged nodes from myNode or CryptoCloaks or things like Nodl, but that will of course also be costly. I'm glad you found the video useful though! Your patience will be rewarded either way

How does one connect their wallet to the node? Its super complex with theese updates for a normal pleb.
@IanMajor2 жыл бұрын
Great question. In the case of Umbrel, there's a tab on the Dashboard labeled "Connect Wallet" which provides step-by-step instructions for a wide range of commonly used wallets. For most other popular node implementations, you'll find something similar. With that said, I can appreciate there are a ton of wallets out there and maybe the answer is not always there. I'm hoping to do a video on this in the near future, but beyond the specifics of a particular wallet/node combination, the more general principle is that wallets should have some sort of "network" or "server" setting. Which boils down to: how is it reading data from the blockchain to produce accurate info for you about things like your balance? Said another way, which node are you using to query said data? By default, it's likely the wallet maker's node, but you should see some sort of field field where you can instead put in your node's onion address which in the case of Umbrel can be found in the Settings tab.

What would you need to do if you have a node setup and are moving somewhere else? What would the process be and would it mess everything up?
@IanMajor2 жыл бұрын
Great question - if you're moving, your node should largely be fine and should pick up syncing the chain state where it last left off. Assuming you're using Umbrel OS, it should automatically restart when it gets plugged back in and gets connected to your new router. Be sure of course to write down your seed/recovery phrase in case something does go wrong and you need to restore any funds you have in your BTC wallet in Umbrel. If you have any lightning channels open, I would probably recommend closing those before you move esp. if you anticipate the node being offline for any reasonable length of time. If you do the above, you should be fine, though none of this is 100% fool-proof. Absolute WORST possible case, if things do for whatever reason mess up and you can't access your node, you could either try following the directions here community.getumbrel.com/t/how-to-set-a-static-ip-for-your-umbrel-machine/845 or alternatively just re-flash the OS (i.e. basically re-follow the steps in this video). Hope this helps!
