My first teacher had two Bechstein Concert 8 uprights, and I have many happy memories of the Bechstein sound because of that. Really I don't know that there was ever a better upright made.

There are plenty of these very worn Bechstein uprights in New Zealand. High-quality German pianos were popular here before the First World War, after which English pianos of generally -- but not always - lower quality became the norm here.

I tuned one of these unequally for a composer in the middle of France a couple of months ago. The agraffes I found to be aggravating, forgive the pun, but designed to hold tuning stability supremely and the tone of the instrument was superb. A jerk action is needed on the tuning pin. For moth prevention my technician mentor advised keeping blue loo blocks inside the case. Smelly and last for ages and moths don't like them.

Loo blocks are an interesting idea; thanks for that Will look into using them though perhaps lavender is a nicer smell! Marcus

"smelly, lasts for ages and disliked by moths" there's a few people in my local pub who would fit that description 😂

Hello. I'm adding a warning you gave in another video anout the importace of keeping well away from bass strings when using a spray in a piano, so take care if spraying for moths.
