The northern town of Kota in India is known for its coaching institutes that help students get into some of the country’s top universities. But it is also infamous for cases of suicide among students, who were believed to be under intense pressure and stress.
Ravinder Bawa visited Kota and met a number of students suffering from psychological instability in their race for a bright future.

Reasons: 1. Parents sometimes expect too much from their children, most students aren't used to such an environment and lack the IQ required to clear this exam. I have seen many of my friends who studied 16hrs a day and yet they never performed because they are in the wrong field and they havent realised it. 2. 99% leave the comfort of their home and are thrown to the wolves in kota. The mind isn't mature enough at 15-16 yrs of age to handle the pressure of this exam. 3. Parents have this false sense of belief that there is no future outside IIT and AIIMS. Combine these 3 factors and this becomes a breaking point for the weak minded students who then slip into depression and commit suicide.

All throughout the video the kids were saying "I can do this", " I must do this", "I thought I couldn't do this", etc. Not one person is asking " Why must I do this?" and that to me is the worst thing about kota. Imagine having a doctor who blindly trusts his institution/superiors to the point that he can't think for himself. Blind obedience in the name of 'respect' for your parents and elders is destroying so many lives and no one wants to do anything about it.

I spent 2 of the worst years of my life in this hell hole My parents sent me to Kota in 9th, they didn't even wait for me to get to 11th , 2 precious years of school life were taken away from me and I was sent to rot in this place and to study something I never even wanted to pursue Imagine all of the pressure students face in Kota , imagine that pressure falling on a 15 year old, I wasn't even one of those "lucky kids" who got enrolled into integrated programs with the CBSE which were significantly easier, I was in a full on JEE coaching course, in fucking 9th grade Guess what happened? I didn't score that well, had a bout with depression, ended up hiding it from my parents even though the doctor had told me, fell prey to various other illnesses like chicken pox and later hepatitis,thanks to the incredible food quality in hostels, which resulted me in coming back home And since we hadn't studied anything CBSE related, I didn't even score well in the 10th boards 2 years of my life I could've spent in my ICSE school, with my childhood friends, could've scored well, could've pursued my actual interests and lived in my house and been a normal kid with 2 good memorable years in high school I still despise my dad for putting me through that, I now look at him with contempt no matter how hard I try not to, and he has always been disappointed in me for not surviving

Cleared ras.and now. Servin in state administration earning more than iit and doctor. With even more. Reputation..actually my father is adoctor who owns his own hospital... But i am more successfull today in a span of 7 years. So plz guys there. Is a world outside kota.. Which is more beautifull.u can get selected. If u get proper guidance. Kota is a killer machine. You know a girl said that 'You have come here to study' then a boy says 'If you wanted to enjoy you could have done that at home' .This is the proof that coaching institutes in Kota have wrecked the children's brains and compelled them to think according to them.I disagree with the boy, If you are learning something and you are not enjoying it then no you have not learnt it you have just freaking memorized it. I have no hesitation in saying that these institutes only want money because they do. They are messing with our future generation. Think about this ' Do every child coming to Kota has a dream to become an engineer or a doctor? Is it really their passion?' I think not! most definately not!! Children are becoming robots.......they are not able to think wisely. And I don't claim that I am right but its the truth that I am right on this thing. These institutes need to be shut. The exam Jee should stop actually. Children should be stopped from opting for Science and Maths because I know not everyone want it. More than 50% students are forced by their parents and if not forced directlt they have been played by their parents who told them there is no better profession than this. Yes it is true some people get placements in big companies and they are happy. But don't you get it only some people can get it. If every single student will thrive for that one position than no the children in this nation are not thinking with their own brains. Being a Science student I can understand the pressure that every IIT aspirant feels but trust me I am never going to be a part of this crazy crowd. I'm way better off than these exams and these colleges and I think most of the students are too. So Government has to stop with this bullshit, businessman creating this coachings do not have a right to decide what our education is gonna look like. And I will do everything I can do to stop this madness. And every one of can you too, trust me it just takes a voice so loud to change people's perspective for good.

It's easier done than said, not everyone get's the opportunity to get an MS from abroad but then this is possible only because of the well renowned professors in IITs, their recommendation holds much more value than any other prof in a private college. If given the opportunity everyone will opt for it irrespective of him belonging to IIT or any other institute. It's people's fault if they are spending so much, not IIT's. Also I shared that video so that you can focus on facts like 20lakh crores of revenue generation for India by IITians, 2 crores of job opportunity, etc
@roy005
@roy005 6 жыл бұрын
The ranking criteria are all defined by the western education system, tailored to suit them. I'm not saying that IITs will top the list if some Indian survey ranks them, but the fact is that the westerners are scared of Indians capturing all the Jobs out there, owing to our stronger skill sets and superior technical prowess.

To any non-Indians, I can't even imagine what you guys must have gone through during your teenage years, but trust me, these kids live in hell, for a dream that isn't even as great as it seems. You need to remember, these kids are in their puberty years (an age which, by default, can seem to be a living nightmare for many), around 15-18 years old, and have been thrown away from their parents, with no regard of the child's interests whatsoever, with a mindset that their sole purpose in life is to crack a stupid exam, for which, they'll have to struggle day in and day out; no vacations! (You're classes won't be everyday, but, self-study can never stop.), whilst their Western contemporaries try to grow and make memories, these kids have to have their brains pre-matured from a teenage form to an adult form as soon as possible, whilst hampering your brain with prolonged cycles of less than 6 hours of sleep, a day; or else, ... Let me answer some recurring doubts many people seem to have. 1. Why are engineering and medical courses so obsessed over around here? Well, think of a small town in the countryside. There is no hospital around here, and even for small allergies, or whatever, you find a need to go all the way to the city. So, imagine that, you, who's not a certified doctor, accidentally stumbles upon the idea to start your own clinic in your town. You treat a few patients in slightly incorrect ways, but, turns out, that they were all successes. This leads to satisfied patients informing their acquantainces about you, which leads to more profit, so, more satisfied patients and more advertisement, to the extent that, you, an illegitimate doctor, become the main specialist of the town. This is exactly what happened in Kota. People stumbled upon these two 'modern', 'Western', 'Cambridge level' courses which kind of went into a snowball effect of popularity among the masses, as the future generation started getting Western level salaries and heavy respect from the locals, the Indian middle class realised that these were the only two courses that could get their families money. Everything was good, the business of Kota, the selected students' ranks, students' salaries; however, this shattered many, including my own, general hope and self-esteem; I'll tell you how. 2. Why do these kids even have to struggle so much, just to study for a 12th grade based exam? In two words, "the competition". It's been some kind of culture in India to publicly shame students based on comparative, emphasis on comparative, numbers and marks. If you get a bad rank, you're equally as much beraded and insulted, as you would have been praised for a good rank. So, you need to study a whole lot more than the general average student. So, many students decide to start studying far before you're expected to, for this exam. I've seen students who completed their grade 12 syllabus in grade 8, just for these exams. These leads to excessive grind for such brittle minds (not to learn a very difficult syllabus, but, just to keep up with the competition) to which, for many, leads to complete exhaustion at some point, but, even a day's rest can send you back a thousand ranks. 3. Why do parents wish to send their kids into this dystopia? This reason kind of culminates from the above two answers. As I've mentioned, Kota is a striving business hub for teachers now. So, they have complete power and ability to advertise the hell out of their classes throughout the nation. So, they show big heavily decorated newspaper, magazine, sometimes TV ads (note that these are things a general Indian uses) about their classes, such that most Indians can see how smart a particular tuition class made this particular student who got such a tremendous rank in his/her exams. This boosts parents to think that these classes are a hub for kids to shine as amazingly well- developed rankers. However, most people forget that even if you sum up all the students from every single tuition class whose name has been advertised in the above manner, the tally will surely be under 50, or so. So, these classes nurtured 50 students out of a total 1.5 million who appear for these exams. Yeah, I'll definitely send my child to be nurtured under such 'esteemed' professionals. 4. How are toppers able to cope up with excessive pressure? Toppers here in India are a bit different from the toppers you might have seen around you. In say, your classroom or school, normally, the class topper, to simply put it, is a nerd. That's a genuine nice kid, who's on his/her toes to solve something, kind of like a science freak, studies for the joy of it. The toppers here, are far different from that description. A topper in Kota is a kid who has the mind of a super mature and methodical adult. It's like puberty never even affected them. Toppers are kids who have the capacity to study for prolonged periods of time whether they like it or not, by curbing their interests heavily; these kids tend to start studying for these engineering exams at a very early age, sometimes from the age of 11 or 12 (the exam is given by 18 year olds). Most importantly, these kids have immense amounts of focus. Just for reference, I was almost always in the top 10 of my classes in class tests, but, due to my lack of immense focus, lack of time spent studying (I just studied for 2 years, the time you're ideally supposed to) and ongoing puberty, I took a fall down to 32nd in my classes in the final exam. Finally, 5. How exactly do these tuition classes help you for your 'bright' future? I'm unaware about medical, as I have pursued engineering from one of these similar classes, but, I'll tell you how these great classes helped me for my career. i. Taught a syllabus dedicated for one specific exam, for one specific college, which has no relation to actual engineering whatsoever ii. Made me lose most of my self-respect after I got a rank far far below what I normally expected I'd get, and having nobody confront me, as I wasn't one of the toppers, and they didn't want to paste my name on an advert. iii. Gave me a 4-5 month long depression, side effects of which I still feel today. iv. Made me mostly lose my interest in Science subjects entirely. v. Made my parents lose most of their hopes about how I could do wonders, making them realise and accept the fact that their kid is also another average, although that same kid actually worsened in quality due to these classes. I can think of more, but, I think these might have given you the full picture. Now, do remember that I do still respect my tuition classes for my rank howsoever it may be, it's still way better than the vast majority, but, they did contribute to sheer loathing of mine and many other students all throughout the country. Many talents throughout the country have been shattered due to the level of competition produced, prioritized and capitalised by these classes, and I don't think this system can end any time soon.

I guess it's not only about parents pressurising students...it's the society as a whole. Just think about it ... I'm going to give an extremely simple example-- whenever our board exams results comes our relatives from all nooks and corners call to inquire about the result and at times flaunt about their own children. More than parents - It's those not wanted inquiries of relatives and your family expectations
@mrigankanavdeep927

Mriganka Navdeep yes you are right. Parents should also support their children understand at the time of board exams a child is seriously tensed cz the whole year round he was told you are in board class... study this...do that.... boards is all that the child listens.

Ananya Narang yes. I'm giving boards right now, but I'm not that tensed, actually I'm trying to maintain balance between study and refreshment, but my parents expect me to study 8+ hours -_- Seriously, it won't be so productive to study for 9-10 hrs.

To be really honest, unless it's your parents or your financial condition that is making you go through this preparation, there is no point of being stressed about an exam. I'm a JEE Aspirant myself, and I do all the studies in a chill way and there's little to no pressure at all. Just do what you can and that's it, have fun if you deserve, work harder if you don't. We make things so complicated even though they aren't. Balance is important. Obv if u study for 15 hours or something, you get frustrated, tired, depressed, and you're stuck in a loop. Study daily, have fun daily, and see how smoothly things go on.

Actually it's no one's fault , but government. Think about it, we got independence in 47 and within a period of like 20-25 years most of the old IITs were setup with only one mission-" to generate a league of extraordinary scientists and engineers to propel the nation" Today We have a population of 125 crores, half of the population is below 25 years old and 2/3 is below 35 years old, making us the youngest demographic in the world , And today after 72 years of independence we have around 16 IITs, is it enough to fulfill the needs of crores of teens who want to become engineers? It's not the kids fault who chose to become an engineer, it's just his fate that he was born in this country at a very wrong time

But only later I came to realise thet your struggles will follow you..... Friends I just want to tell u one thing.... Have fun while u can and make lots of friends...... And if u are very determined to study medicine, I would recommend you to solve previous year question papers and practice them again and again.... And don't let all those books fool you... Find and study what u need and thats all it takes.....

The problem is students are forced to take science by their parents thinking that there is no other option or students take it as their friends are also taking the same .There is no doubt that education system of schools in India is completely messed up and without these institutes one can't make it to premier engineering or medical institutions of the country . There is no doubt that these coaching institutes provide you best quality education and teachers are the best you would find in the nation with most of them being IITians,NITians .etc while in schools only those become teachers who are not able to achieve their dreams and finally enters teaching line and the person himself is not clear with his concepts . In Kota the methodology of education is simply the best with regular modules,sheets,dpp for regular practice and class starts with discussion of the homework given and there are regular tests every week or every two weeks on pattern of actual exam which help you prepare in the examination environment and you get to know you actual progress. I have experienced both systems School(In class 11/12 ) and Kota coaching (in 13th) and I can surely say there is nothing wrong with Kota's coaching .

This video remind me of how I and my HS friends got to top state universities, a lot of student's parent would pay tons of money to get their children into this sort of cram school, then they spent 12 hours a day to study and solve thousands of exercises. And tbh it is exhausting. Yet, after getting into those top tier uni, we still doubt our future because of the high pressure and competition. And what's the ridiculous thing that annoy me the most. It is the fact that top tier uni in my country dont even get into top 50 in Asia, the research output aren't even comparable to mediocre uni in another country (even the third world). Such a life

I'm local of Kota only and I'm too studying for JEE but I think the students who are not from Kota have a huge pressure of their families because they spent very big amount on everything from Coaching, school, for food, study materials. And most of the coachings have fees in lakhs. Moreover the competition is getting tougher and tougher every year. These things put intense pressure on these minds. Why they feel that they have wasted their parents money if unfortunately they can't pass this exam. Their are many other universities from which you can do B. Tech.

I have completed MBBS and now I'm doing MS. Although the amount that I had to study was so much more in college, I was still not as anxious as i was in that institute (i used to have panic attacks at times) . I'm grateful that I became a doctor with their help but I don't think giving students so much stress that it leads to depression and eventually suicide is right at any cost. But yeah to answer your question I'm at a much happier place then i was 5 years back. The thing about this institution is that they don't really focus on one's knowledge. They just teach them tricks to solve the questions. So evan a knowledgeable student there might suffer to pass those exams. This is just the surface leavel. There was so much going on behind the scenes. I studied at a time were neet was not relevant for every college so I don't know how things has changed there now. But it was one hell of a place back then.

I just never gave up. I want to tell all the aspirants that please don't let the failure get inside your mind and believe one thing that life is beyond IITs there is much more to explore. Please interact with your family and friends and don't let yourself alone, keep expressing what are your thoughts always with your friends and family who understands you very well.
