What is assimilation and how does it make you sound more fluent and speak more quickly and effortlessly? In this English pronunciation lesson you will learn how the sounds t, d and n change at the end of words to make it easier to transition to the next word (this is assimilation!). Improve your English pronunciation and listening skills by learning more about this feature of connected speech.

I teach using just one of many accents in the world. Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

Thank you, Emma! As usual, a fantastic video with great tips to be more fluent in our speech. Keep up the good work! It is greatly appreciated! 🙏🏼 I understand "assimilation" and I am conscious of it and able to"use" it while I am reading in English for example. But when I speak to people I forget about it 😳 and fall back to trying to pronounce every sound. 😂 Do you have any tips on how to practise in order to use "assimilation" more naturally? Thanks again and best regards from 🇲🇽.

The secret to fluency is a rich vocabulary, knowledge of grammar, and confidence to speak without fear of committing mistakes. On the other hand, assimilation and reduction are a strategy for sounding natural and native-like in a language one is learning.

Classical Arabic is the first foreign language to Indonesians in general. Since little, Indonesians have been taught the phonetics of Classical Arabic. One of its language features taught is assimilation, which works just like English assimilation does. How /n/ becomes /m/ when it meets /b/ and how /n/ becomes /ŋ/ when it meets /k/, for example, are things which should not be felt strange to Indonesians. However, in practice, it is still felt strange to many Indonesians. So, when we speak English, none of us employs assimilation in our English pronunciation.

Hi. I’ve been living in Germany last 13 years. I used to speak with British accent. But nowadays because of my daily work, I have to speak German. And therefore, I’m forgetting my English accent. I found your page in KZbin. Thanks. It is very nice and informative. I started to work on my pronunciation. There are two main online English translation & pronunciation sources. Cambridge & Oxford. In spite of both of these claim they use modern RP English accents, pronunciations are different. Would you be so kind as to clarify this? Personally, I like Cambridge accent. I know that the first English language book was from Oxford university. Could it be Oxford uses “Conservative RP” English pronunciation? I would like to thank you beforehand. Once more, thank for informative English videos.

As a foreign speaker I've leaned towards and learnt to use US accent, but as a lot of people do - I love British accents - all of them pretty much. Regarding assimilation - I always think of Brits pronouncing the word DRAWER in at least some accents, and in some of the US - ASK being pronounced as AKS. Not really an assimilation - but I love it )
