It seems like actions were taken, the boys backpack was searched, and his parents were called to pick him up. In hindsight, the principal could have continued to escalate the searches until they found something, but I don't think that's the standard.

Where are the little boy's caregivers in all of this ? How does a 6 year old child gain access to a firearm? I am 72 years old, have guns in my home, but none of my grandkids know where they are. This is the problem with schools these days. They don't hold anyone accountable, the kids, the parents, nobody. The teachers did not see the gun, they reported that 2 different children had claimed to see the gun but when they searched his backpack it wasn't there. The teacher who was shot said she thought she saw him take something from the backpack and put it in his pocket, but they needed permission from the AP to search the boy himself and the AP explicitly denied permission to search him, snidely saying that his pockets were too small for a gun. 20 minutes later he shot his teacher in the chest

That child had a long history of violent behavior and was expelled the previous year for trying to strangle his kindergarten teacher and another student. He should not have been in a mainstream 1st grade class, he needed therapy and a lot of help, but the only safety plan they had for him was that one of his parents was always supposed to be in class with him. But no parent showed up that day. His father has a criminal history and his mother has drug problems, as well as legal problems for having previously tried to shoot the father with the same gun the child used. The first grade teacher who was the victim of this shooting had nothing to do with his anger issues.

We had a fire and rather than get the fire bottles and qualified Marines to put the fire out, they sprinted 500 yards to tell the Maintenance chief. Really sad it happened and sadder yet that people want to ruin someones life over this as if they were the one pulling the trigger.

There was a LOT of precedent - this child was expelled from kindergarten for trying to strangle his teacher and another student, and a few day before the shooting he smashed the teachers cell phone. He had a long history of very violent behavior and he was not supposed to be in class without a parent present to help control him, but the parent didnt show up and the AP let him stay in class anyway. The AP was told that several students said he had a gun and had showed it to them, and teachers searched his backpack but it wasn't there. A teacher thought she saw him move something from the backpack to his pocket, and even with ALL that information, plus a long history of violent behavior by this child, the AP refused to allow the guidance counselor to search the child. 20 minutes later he shot his teacher in the chest, and then instead of securing the school and making sure everyone was safe, she locked herself in her office, leaving a visitor and a hysterically crying child in the outer office, along with the wounded teacher who was lying bleeding and unconscious on the floor. And THEN she stole all the students disciplinary records because she knew they showed she had a long history of refusing to deal with this child's violent behavior.

The teachers checked his backpack but they were not allowed to search his clothes without permission and the AP refused to allow them to search him, despite knowing this child had a LONG history of violence and being told that several students claimed he had a gun and they had seen it. And the mother has already been charged, convicted, and will spend nearly 4 years in prison

Problem is this - Schools will not call real police until something like this happens . They want to keep it internally and deal with it themselves . But here the school staff notified the person that was suppose to deal with incidents like students capable of violent outburst. As I see it the former assistant just blew it off and now she becomes the target of a new chapter to be held accountable for failure to act when a real threat was evident .

I'm not saying what he did is or was right at all but what could this teacher have possibly done to make this child want to harm her as parents we have to listen to our kids when they come home and tell us these teachers are being mean or talking to them any kind of way but as a parent it's your responsibility to make sure you never put your child in harms way because what if he had shot or killed himself with that same gun
