Assistive Technology in Action - Meet Mason

The Family Center on Technology and Disability (FCTD) and PACER Center are pleased to announce the release of our new assistive technology awareness series, AT in Action. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), this fully-captioned video series is designed to strengthen awareness of AT devices that help individuals with disabilities participate fully in school, at home, and in the community. In this third video, you'll meet Mason, a young boy with vision loss who, with the help of AT, is able to learn reading and writing in the same classroom as his sighted peers. What these adaptations can do is phenomenal and inspiring !!! They are windows into the soul of people who otherwise would be basically trapped in a dark cell.

One of the most important things is that he learns to spell English spelling, as grade 2 braille spelling is different. He has a good future.

AKA Sam , I've been visually impaired most of my life blind in my right eye low vision in my left primary Pizza technology due to glaucoma and nystagmus my vision fluctuates between 2072 to 20/200. I received orientation and Mobility training when I was about his age learn to use a cane but was never actually given one and I mostly got by with just large print and audio I was never offered Braille which I would have liked to learn.

I'm totally blind, and I know Braille! I also use a screenreader on my computer called Jaws.

It would have been very helpful if you posted what the devices being used in this video were. It was frustrating trying to understand what the specialist was saying in regards to the device's names.

Yes, it was very difficult to understand what she was saying. After some Google-ing, I have discovered that it is called a Mountbatten Brailler

Most videos that discuss accommodations for disabilities have proper captions. so if you're curious, this video's CC mentions the name of the devices (just writing this here in case if you were curious/this type of situation crops up again!)
