Assobio a Jato, Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959)
Adagio
Allegro non troppo
Flute: Liliana Carpenter
Cello: Sungmin Park
Performed live in Hughes Hall Auditorium on November 7th, 2021.
Assobio a Jato is a fantasy piece for flute and cello. The piece was written by Villa-Lobos in New York in 1950 and was first performed in Rio de Janeiro. The work is dedicated to Elizabeth and Carleton Sprague Smith and continues Villa-Lobos’s penchant for writing high- and low-voiced instrumental duos. Assobio a Jato plays on the natural characteristics of the flute and cello. The lyrical Adagio movement showcases the low register of the flute while the cello largely provides the harmonic material. Allegro non troppo is a much more lively movement that passes a folk-like melody between players. While one player performs the melody, the other accompanies insistently.
