ASTATIC SILVER EAGLE PLUS CB Base Microphone (Repair)

Take a look inside of this Astatic Silver Eagle Plus microphone with built in VOX and Roger Beep. #cbradio #cb A good friend of mine asked me to trouble shoot and repair this beauty. Needle Bender 99 / UDX-99 will be sounding loud and proud on this beautiful mic. A little TLC and it is good to go.
Not mentioned in this video, another issue was two wires needed to be changed on the mic plug. Black and shield were backwards.

I had a plain d-104 back in the '70s. It will crank the modulation out. Takes some time to get the best sound tuned to your radio. I drove people nuts for days. "Now how does this sound?" 🤓 But once you get it set it holds. Does need periodic cleaning and maintenance. Theres a grey foam cover that covers the condeser mic head to protect it from getting spit or other contaminents on the head behind the chrome cover. If that deteriates it will mess up the sound bad. Over time that foam turns to dust and falls apart. Not hard to change (4 screws) but out of site out of mind. A little spray cleaner and fresh foam pad your golden.

I have one of those. Its a little beat from years of abuse but it still works....well, it did a year or two ago. Back in the day (late 80's/early 90's) I was famous for my "polite" roger beep AKA "ETS" from that mic. That's what the piezo was for...it creates the beep. I think ETS stands for "ending tone sound" if I can recall back to what the manual said. The chicken choker on mine always went out of adjustment too so I just used the whammy bar....I got tired of fixing it. That mic also needed a good battery in at all times to work. If I recall, if the battery is dead the mic will key but never unkey due to the fact that it is electronically keyed rather than mechanically keyed with the old leaf switches.

I noticed that when the battery was not connected the mic acted as if it was keyed up... Major design flaw.. I will tear the mic apart and add a disconnect switch to stop battery drainage, or something to that effect:) It also looks like the plastic rod that comes from the choker bar could wear as it has a cam effect on the metal piece that makes contact for switching... WOW! Bad mechanical and wiring design all around. To keep voltage so a relay can be latched in RX mode? REALLY? Thanks 741 for your comment, you got me thinking.......

@@390WagonMaster it's been years since I took mine apart but I seem to remember something in there was held on with tape. It almost seems to me like an electrical engineer did the mechanical design and a mechanical engineer did the electrical design....it's a weird mic for sure

Copy that 741 :) I'm going to dig back in there and see what I can do. Any relay should be normally be unlatched when there is no power at circuit. Weird design for sure. This mic is wired like a Jaguar or Land Rover.. Lucas wiring... Boooo! ( British never could wire a vehicle )

*Update* A Fresh Battery did fix my issue of always being keyed! Thanks. Also When I had it opened up I keyed it up and I believe the Little Round White Piezo is for the roger beep (ETS) Noise.

Neither of my mics have this board and relay system. They also do not have the switches for the VOX or attenuation switches. Both of mine just has a mic gain pot on the bottom and both have a battery

Put in a fresh battery and try the mic, they stay keyed up when the battery is dead or missing..
