This is a big part of my childhood and aside from impeccably adapting the looks the humor, the story and the characters, I think not enough people mention how awesomely they made the gaul villagers really feel like one community. They get a huge number of moments to show they are one big group of friends and neighbours at the end of the day. Like near the end of this scene. The old guy yells that he wants to join the fight to have fun and the others throw him a Roman soldier so he can feel like he's participating. Then, when he gets slapped to the ground, they toss the soldier back and crowd around him to check if he's okay, then once he reveals he forgot to drink from the potion, they all go "Aaah, whoops, so that's why, it's okay old timer!" just looking happy he's okay and nothing is wrong with him. It all just feels heartwarming.

It's charming, it's funny, it has great chemistry between the two lead actors playing Asterix and Obelix, the designs they implemented make the characters look realistic while still resembling their cartoon counterparts and it brings an actually unique story into the world of these characters. Gerard Depardieu is to Obelix what Hugh Jackman is to Wolverine. You don't see an actor do his job. You see a childhood hero come to life. While I never saw someone get Asterix right in these movies, Gerard got Obelix down perfectly. Where Asterix is more of a mature, brilliant strategist, Obelix is the peaceful, childish, friendly giant. In the animated movies they got both down perfectly. But here, I never bought Asterix.
