There's a growing backlash against the so-called meritocracy and something like this might push it over the edge, as it should. This phony liberal narrative, this fantasy that higher education is some noble, good thing for society, and not a de facto caste system, and by now altogether just another grift for all parties involved, students, instructors, researchers, administrators, banks, even Wall St., is getting set to crumble. The meritocracy, which amounts to nothing more than holding a college degree no matter how banal, has predictably become a de facto pedigreed aristocracy. And you can't qualify for the most menial professional employment without it. And naturally the tide is finally turning against it, as times inevitably get tougher So I'd look for an exit strategy if I were you, instead of clinging to the always spurious conventional wisdom, that college attendance is next to godliness. The center's not going to hold on that one. The social mobility you lust after is going to have to come from somewhere else.

I've got 27k in student loans and about 10k in medical bills. Definitely a common thing to have both. I think school should be free so no student debt either, but the medical debt held by millions of Americans is especially gross.

I'm one of those For Profit Colleges after got out of service came home to find out my brother had died. I spent all my back pay and separation pay. My Mom and stepdad told me if I was going to work and then taking drugs and drinking they wanted me to go to school. They said there's a College where they get u a job after graduation. They took me there and told me to enroll. They said because I lived with parent's didn't qualify for highest grant. Had me sign like 20 page contract said if I wanted to read it they said I could but somewhere in there it said "All fund to be paid directly to I.B.C.

The middle class taxpayer will have to pay for relief to college students whose increased income from proper college planning should have paid those student loans. It's unfair to expect us others who couldn't get student loans or free grants & scholarships... who didn't have friends in the grants & internship offices... to put their applications ahead of ours, year after year... And let's understand what a good portion of debt is for; health insurance. Many students have taken out LOANS to pay for state university health insurance (3-6k per year). The same health insurance that disappears when & if you actually need it for a serious illness or injury and can no longer maintain full-time student status?!! So you borrow money for years to pay for health insurance, get sick and the health insurance is no longer valid, BUT you still have to pay the loans for the health insurance! Biden should absolutely forgive any debt from any student with a medical withdrawal!! It's not fair & no other civilized country does this to their people. One serious illness can destroy your life, such as Type 1 diabetes. It's not even considered a disability (yet you can die every day), so you spend your life with the main priority & solely focused on getting & keeping health insurance to have the treatment to stay alive. Then live with the debt of student loans without a completed degree that you cannot repay because all that matters is your health insurance. It's horrible & inhumane. Please, please include people who've left school because of an illness (not a strict permanent disability) in your request.🤍

All student debt is to a certain degree a con, because a degree is essentially a requirement for entry level jobs now, and most careers will never deliver wages that enable people to pay their student debt. The government doesn’t need this money, most student debt will never be collected. This is a misconception about student debt; taxpayers aren’t paying for student loans of people who can’t pay. Rather than have education be free, our society has decided to have the government give the money to students who then have to give the money to schools who can just continuously raise tuition prices and fees as much as they want. The government is paying out money for students regardless of their ability to pay, with no expectation to make it back. This system makes no sense, but it exists because loan servicers get to skim off the top and make profit from public money and student debtors. Asking if people considered the salary of their chosen career is the wrong question; many of the most vital professions or jobs in this country pay very little. Do you want to live in a world without nurses, teachers, social workers?

Nobody forced people to go to college and to take out student loans. People willingly took on dept. It is only right, proper for people to pay back their student loans. If people with student loans get a free ride, why not add car loans, credit cards, mortgages, and credit lines to dept forgiveness? How is forgiving student loans fair to people that paid back their student loans, did not go to college, and more broadly, the American taxpayer? Instead of trying to find ways to shirk their legal obligations, people should get on with paying their depts, being the people they committed themselves to being.

Why can't a country with more people and more money be better than smaller nations? Why must we be forced to pay back the interest when its compounded quarterly and you can only pay 90% of the interest before paying the principle. Student loan debt is designed to never be paid back. I doubt either of you pay very much in taxes as is. More over most of the government's money comes from businesses and sales tax, unless of course you are paying hundreds of millions in taxes your payments are barely a drop in the bucket. Because people have to go to college know for pretty much any entry-level role. That includes trade schools too, which also require education and certification that people take loans for too. People took on debt because their only option was to take on debt in the hopes of creating a better life for themselves. This system exists only to enrich a small number of loan servicers and big banks, why should people be forced to have their earnings garnished their entire lives just so a small number of people can make a profit?

In 1970 the average annual tuition was $358, today it's $9,750. Even adjusted for inflation it's more than tripled. Colleges have become big businesses. And the more money they take in is NOT going to professors, it's going into these enormous endowment funds and straight into the stock market. Colleges are more like hedge funds & financial investors than academic institutions. It's not that students just don't want to pay it back... The system has been taken over by the same philosophy as the big corporations who require the degrees (it helps keep/enslave the employees better with debt hanging over their heads). It's time for us to stand up for one another.

Since you are uneducated you dont understand that it's the INTEREST that makes these loans impossible to pay off. Taxpayers are NOT paying for this forgiveness in any way. The numbers you keep hearing about are the lost INTEREST on these loans. Again, costs taxpayers NOTHING to forgive these loans. If anything, this puts money back into the economy so people can hire people like you to do necessary work. This is a GOOD THING for trades work and small businesses.

@@ryouhonoo5 Cuz they agreed to the debt? My mom paid her debt off fer her phd at 74 years old so I guess I do not think it is cruel. I do think it speaks VOLUMES about a persons character. I do not think it's cool to be in too deep. It SHOULD be the school/counselor/institutions fight not the federal Govs. Fannie/freddie/state school/private school... NOT citizens. I loathe that it makes me sound mean, I do. I do not think the people who didn't take on debt to survive should be in any way involved in the books of strangers. Not cool. I thought higher education taught basic economics.

@ they “agreed to the debt” without any other real options. Your mother’s phd (strange she had to pay for a PhD as most PhD programs come with funding, not sure I even believe you) cost orders of magnitude less than what todays degrees cost. Of course it isn’t “cool” to be in massive amounts of debt, no one thinks that. People take on the debt because they have no choice, it’s a requirement to have a career now. Why would it not be the state’s job to enforce tuition prices at public universities? They are the only entity with the power to do so. The system is set up to make a very small number of people rich, mostly off of the interest payments for student loan debt which is what causes these debts to be astronomical in the first place. The government shouldn’t be charging interest on money for education to begin with

Free college is not free. Someone has to pay the bill. 'Free college' means high tax bills for everyone.

Works in every other 1st world nation but for some reason won't work here. Our taxes are a tiny percent of what congress actually spends. Most of that tax money comes from businesses and sales tax. Even if it was to increase our taxes it wouldn't be that much. Again if Europe can figure it our with less people per capita and less money than America then wtf is going on with the US?

@@mearl3977 But they cant. Most European countries are finding they can not afford 'free' college. Also, businesses simply pass on the higher taxes onto the consumers by raising their rates. And everyone has to pay sales tax.

If you want to live in society, you have to pay taxes. Otherwise, don’t use our roads, government funded hospitals, fire, or police services. These are all social services. Education should also be provided to the people and paid for by taxes.

You do realize that the government could just pay schools directly, and enforce tuition controls on the schools to prevent the constantly ballooning costs of college, right? The system as it exists is more expensive than free college

Do you want to live in a world without teachers? How about nurses? Social workers? Those degrees don’t seem so worthless now, do they?
