Since it is the 10 year anniversary of How To Train Your Dragon this month, I thought I'd release an orchestral mock-up of the cue "Astrid Goes For A Spin," which is from the original film. It was interesting to learn about John Powell's orchestration style while creating this midi mock-up. I'd describe it as very focused and lean. He' selective with doublings; each section has a simple but specific part, and these parts interlock with a quick but determined precision, creating a power and energy that is greater than the sum of its parts. It's exactly the kind of orchestration that I hope to emulate more often.
It was sad to say goodbye to these beloved characters with the release of the final instalment of the trilogy last year. I hope you enjoy this mock-up.
