To save a bit of menu juggling, when wanting to use the asteroid attractor gun, just walk Upto the device and press 'F'

The recycler is only useful for disassembling a building or utility that you have no use for, anything you deconstruct gets added as recyclables meaning you can reuse the building to place it somewhere else. My only issue is that the auto asteroid catcher randomly picks asteroids to mine, creating deficiencies in certain critical resources I need like Ice and Coal.

The Auto Asteroid Catcher is only random by default but in the "e" menu, you can set them to specifically target Copper, Iron, Ice, or Carbon ensuring that you have a steady supply of those 4 resources. Unfortunately they have no such setting for Gold, so that will typically only trickle in from the ones set to default "any" or those that catch hybrid asteroids. Once you have 1 set to carbon to feed your power generators, 1 to water to produce Oxygen tanks and others set to random, you'll be set until you need higher tier materials.

Very interesting, Nook. But I get space sickness - well, motion sickness - in these space games where I can move in three dimensions. Heh, heh. Well, I'm sick today, anyway. So who knows? I must admit I'm wondering how trees can grow on asteroids in space, but... for the sake of my health, I don't think I'd better watch further. :)
