Taking a Picture of Saturn Through my Telescope.
Telescope Used: bit.ly/3oPA8MQ
Camera Used: bit.ly/3OY9LPg
I connect a camera to my Celestron Edge HD 11 telescope to take a close-up picture of the planet Saturn from my backyard.
The final image is a stack of the best 200 frames of 1500 taken with the ZWO ASI290mm Mini. It's still pretty blurry (and black and white), but my best photo of this planet to date!
A special thank you to Dylan O'Donnell for the helpful tips;)

Thank you for watching, and clear skies!

Saturn is what got me hooked on astronomy. When I was 11 or 12, I was looking at random stars through my Tasco 3" reflector I got for Christmas. I accidentally pointed it at Saturn one night, got focus and saw the rings. Boy was I super stoked! I had the entire neighborhood in our driveway whenever I brought it out. I soon learned my way around the night sky after that.

Trevor, the look on your face at the end of this video is exactly the look I have when I produce a picture of only half the quality of the images that you produce. You are the reason that I have dived head over feet into this amazing hobby. I cannot thank you enough for starting me on this amazing journey.... Your final shot of that emotion you show is how I feel every time I find something with my telescope. When I had my $60 telescope pointed at the conjunction and you could see the spot, the moons and Saturn's rings. I get emotional as well. It makes me realize I want to do what you do. Because of the beauty of the universe.

Don’t we all have those “this is not the best pic” but we can still feel gooey inside knowing we did it! It’s a lovely image. I still show my image of Mars that I made in July, 2018 with the dust storm raging at opposition. I used a borrowed Takahashi 130, my ASI178 monochrome and a near-IR filter. I still get “WOW, you got that?” Keep up the good work. You are an inspiration.

Trevor, I still remember having 8 years and hunting the Halley Comet with my dad in the countryside of Brazil through his Newtonian (maybe 6"?). We saw Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon and etc, by current standards it was very bad with eyepieces that today we would laugh about. After following for a handful of months you, Dylan, Chuck, Antoine and Dalia, and Wido Oerlemans - to name a few - I decided today to pull the trigger and get a rig, want to learn in the next few years while my kid grows and pass the passion to science/astronomy/photography to him just like my dad did to me. Thanks for you guys now I will go broke :D Congrats on APOD, well deserved.

This reminded me of the time I pointed my new lens towards a realy bright star. The first pictures were a bit of a let down because of the quality of the lens. Even on the preview screen I could see some kind of smearing around that "star"... Until I opened it in capture One and zoomed in to 200%, there it was: My first picture of saturn, totaly by accident and even in a whopping 12 x 12 pixel resolution 😃 Glad I found this channel, to see how it's done properly.

Do it. Thats how I started, with a 10" dob and no tracking. I used my dslr at the time, but a cheaper small sensor, high frame rate camera is much better. Even with just moving the dob by hand to keep the object in frame, you can get similar results to what Trevor got in this vid.

My Dad died in 2013 and a RASC star party was one of the many ways my fiance made me feel close to him again. I never saw Saturn with my own eyes before that night. Plus, one of the members gave me a cookie. When I shared my experience at work my Chef started asking me how he could feed his daughter's passion for science with the night sky, and I had to ask myself too. This video captures just how he could do that (if he was good with computers, or his kid was committed). THank-you.

Sorry to hear about your father. The imaging side of this hobby is honestly the most difficult part requiring the most computer knowledge, $, and time. A great starting point would be a 8" - 10" Dobsonian telescope. They are a bit big and bulky but are absolute BEASTS for visual astronomy. You can grab an Apetura 8" for like $350 when you can easily spend 10x that on a full imaging set up. Hope he decides to promote his daughters interest in science! In my personal opinion there isn't much more noble of a goal in life than to push the young generation towards their dreams in science.

My path in astronomy began in a similar way around the same time, using an Orion XT8I and a Logitech Quickcam. I only had 6 possible targets, it was incredibly frustrating at times trying to manually track planets and it was even harder since I couldn't reach focus without a barlow. With that being said, all the frustration vanished after seeing a stacked image of another world and knowing that I actually photographed it. Love you videos man. Clear skies from the Old Pueblo.

I bought the 8" dob because of your video on it. I got to see Saturn a few months ago for the first time and my stomach dropped. Jupiter was amazing too, but something about actually seeing Saturn got me. Thanks man!

Last weekend I took pictures of Saturn and Jupiter with my 102mm Maksutov, ASI120MM camera, Barlow x2 and a Celestron nextsar ALZ mound. I watched a Damian Peach tutorial about edition, and I am very happy with the results. Much noisy but much contrast and you can see details. I don't used any filter but with this results, I think that I'll buy a RGB set in the future.

The first time I saw Saturn when I was 10 yrs old through my 2.5in refractor my stomach felt like the feeling you get when driving over a small humpback bridge in a car.

Congratulations! The planetary imaging bug is very strong! I've had it for 3 years already, and it isn't waning at all :) The uncertainty around focus is a fact of life of planetary imaging. Especially when you'll start using a barlow. I find it helps to use a slightly higher exposure time (say 30ms) and lower gain to get the focus as good as you can. A Bahtinov mask is honestly not precise enough. However, when imaging, I've found that shorter exposures at higher gain (which means you can record MORE frames in the same time) always wins compared to longer exposure at lower gain. It looks worse when recording, because of the higher gain, but the end result is consistently better with shorter, more numerous high gain exposures. I'd have gone with 5-6ms in your case (w/o Barlow). Oh, and .SER is fine. Autostakkert opens them no problem. And if you want an .AVI, you can use PIPP to convert your raw .SER file. I think of .SER as the planetary video equivalent of .FITS.

Planetary astronomy had always captivated me so much more than deep sky. Just the though that I am looking at another world with it's moons, weather and possibly man-made objects orbiting it. It made it feel so much more real in a sense. I got very interested in the topic years ago and stumbled upon a guy in Australia building custom telescopes to photograph the planets. Some of the most amazing planetary images I have ever seen. Look him up! It’s "birds astronomy site" on google, first link. Anyway, thanks for great content! Keep it up :)

That's a great first picture Trevor. I've been taking planetary pictures with my 8inch SCT for several years now and getting sharp focus can be quite tricky, even with a Batinov mask (our southern Ontario weather doesn't help much either). Keep at it! - it can be frustrating at times but also very rewarding - especially when you get that money shot!

I received my first telescope when I was 15, it was a Polaris 90mm refractor on an equatorial mount. The first night I set it up was on the balcony of our apartment in Scarborough Ontario. I had no idea what I was doing, pointed it at the first bright object I saw and it turned out to be Saturn. Word cannot describe even at 15 how amazing that was. That experience took place back in the 70;s and I remember as if it happened yesterday. Awesome videos man, keep up the outstanding work!

Great video! A few years ago I saw Saturn through a friend’s bird watching Swarovski telescope, in a clear southern Spanish sky. I will never forget it! We could even see the rings, although it was on band of white. I couldn’t believe how fast it moved across the view finder! Incredible. Thanks for your videos 👍👍

Way to go! I used to do planetary with actual film late 90's, then moved on to digital cameras in 00's and now using dedicated ZWO doing the same technique you are. I started using Firecapture & Autostakkert last year and wow... my eyes almost popped out of their sockets the first time I used Autostakkert -- I snagged my best Saturn ever right out of the gate. I'm excited for Mars opposition 2020. Thanks for all your info share & cheers from Texas!
