Astrobiology in the Field, Episode 1: Iceland
Created by Mike Toillion.
This expedition is the first installment in a brand new NASA Astrobiology video documentary series, entitled Astrobiology in the Field. This series aims to showcase the amazing analogue environments and the interesting field work being conducted all over the world by NASA scientists; work that directly informs NASA missions to discover extraterrestrial life in the Universe.
This episode follows team FELDSPAR: the Field Exploration and Life Detection Sampling for Planetary and Astrobiology Research. Led by Georgia Institute of Technology’s Dr. Amanda Stockton, and funded by the NASA Astrobiology’s PSTAR program, team FELDSPAR is investigating the distribution of life amongst fresh lava fields in the volcanically-active regions of Iceland.
For more information, visit astrobiology.nasa.gov/news/as....
NOTE: At 6:53, an image of ADP, not ATP, is actually shown.

I can't believe I just discovered this! I decided to study biochemistry in college hoping to become involved in astrobiology research in the future and somehow got a little lost along the way, but discovering this definitely brought my attention back!

The land of ice and fire! My wife and I were wed in Iceland on the winter solstice, on a ship in Faxa Bay (by Reykjavík) while under the northern lights. It was pretty awesome! Definitely a very cool nation, for astrobiology research as well as for some cool touring around.

That's wonderful! It's a huge field and there's lots of us doing all kinds of cool stuff to better understand how life works on our planet and whether or not we might be alone in the cosmos. Through NASA Astrobiology, we also have a show called Ask an Astrobiologist where myself and Sanjoy Som chat with other astrobiologists about their research and their careers. You might want to check that out. And you might want to check out this page on some career pathways: astrobiology.nasa.gov/career-path-suggestions/

It was an amazing experience to see the FELDSPAR team growing over the years - starting from a summer school exercise in 2012. Full credits also to Mike for creating this nice videoclip. I was always happy to be part of the team (I am not featuring on the documentation, which, for aesthetic reasons, is probably preferable).

Great documentary on astrobiology field science. Looks so fun. As an aside, it's sadly humorous, when the researchers enter the lab, how natural it looks that they're all wearing masks. I took it for granted that it was for COVID concerns. Interesting to watch videos like this with knowledge of our current "future".
