If you bought a brand new TV in 1977 there's a decent chance it is still working reasonably well today. You might just have to smack it a few times to get the vertical hold steady. So it doesn't really shock me that voyager is still working. Now, seeing the quality of modern TVs I wouldn't bet a spoon of toenail clippings that if voyager was built and launched today that it would make it longer than a week after the warranty expired.

SpaceX starship is already part of Artemis. It's the HLS lander. If SLS was cancelled the only thing that would need replaced is the ride to the HLS. There are multiple different options to either still use the Orion or switch to dragon.

8:00 - Not only Da Vinci, in 2025 Caltech is sending Venus Life Finder (if I remember right) probe to Venus. It's small probe, launched on Rocket Lab Electron, but it will check Venus atmosphere from up close. It's also interesting from the point of rockets getting cheaper and probes getting more efficient, than in the past. There's a place for large probes (which are getting more sofisticated and robust), but various tasks can be done by smaller probes for less.
@pseudotasukiАй бұрын
There's a good chance the SLS replacement wont be entirely from SpaceX. The leading contender is thiught to be a variant of the so-called "Bridenstack": a Falcon Heavy carrying Orion and a Centaur upper stage.

Even the SLS's massively overbudget launch tower isn't ready and won't BE ready. The video seems to imply it is expensive but otherwise ready for Artemis II (much less III) ... it isn't. Starship isn't ready either, yet, but at a planned 20+ launches next year, at least it looks like it will be, despite the delays to date. And it is cheaper and faster to launch even a dozen expendable Starships then a single SLS.

Sort of not surprised on SLS being potentially cut... while people were "dunking" on Musk for rocket failures I knew that NASA's attempt was way, way behind where SpaceX was. Really big rockets are really, really hard to get to work. This isn't Musk cheerleading but rather pointing at the ignorance of the general public as to what NASA is working on and where they are at with a similar project.
@brianrockwood2018Ай бұрын
SLS was cut because of the people we voted into office. Musk is wildly rich, yes...but if we put just 2 percent of taxpayer money towards NASA we'll land humans on mars within 5-6 years.
@TeltharАй бұрын
@@brianrockwood2018 The SLS has been plagued with problems and concerns since its inception. It was accused way back of being a project more about preserving jobs than a practical system. The project is way behind schedule and way, way over budget already. This isn't a new thing and has little to do with the most recent election. It *is* political to try and say there is nothing wrong with the project and it is only because Trump that it would be cancelled. You would have to have been living under a rock when it comes to the SLS to come to this conclusion.
@brianrockwood2018Ай бұрын
@Telthar You completely missed the point I was trying to make. My point is that NASA is very VERY underfunded. We support our military industrial complex 1000x more than NASA. One guy with 200 billion dollars can't compete with nations like China who are dumping MORE than that into their space programs every year. I don't mind private businesses getting involved in space exploration but let's be honest, they'll never be able to compete against government funded programs when said governments put their minds to funding projects. Right now NASA's budget is around 18 billion a year which is half a penny of every dollar an American citizen is taxed, so .05 percent. When we went to the moon it was 2% of every dollar taxed.
@TeltharАй бұрын
@@brianrockwood2018 what does this have to do with the project being way over budget? I don't disagree that NASA is underfunded, but someone screwed up royally to have the SLS be more than double the budget now, that is a horrible miscalculation. Also, this is not limited to GOP or Dem. A Republican saved the Europa mission, for instance. My comments related to the SLS are specific to this project, it has spiraled out of control with not much success to show for it. This one project is a problem, not all of NASA

RE: SLS. It should have been canceled years ago. It's build on 1970s technology which was expensive then and is ridiculously expensive now. It is a life support system for the aerospace industry, and pork for the federal government. NASA would have been better off developing a clean sheet design than insisting on "Space Shuttle Derived Technology". It's already been eclipsed by Superheavy and the Starship. To continue the development of SLS would be to engage in the sunk cost fallacy.

I’m torn on SLS, it is a budget boondoggle and way behind schedule, but we’ve already put so much into it. It really is the question of the “sunk cost fallacy”. The falcon heavy is probably the best option to rescue the Artemis program. The mission might have to be done in more steps, but it would be both faster and cheaper. Unfortunately Blue Origin’a New Glen rocket is not yet operational and wouldn’t have the ability to accomplish the mission in its current block. It will probably be competitive with SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and is the other big contender in the future of space launches (along with small launch providers like Rocket Lab). The one upside for Artemis is that Starship development is well underway and should be able to deliver the lander in time. The big hang up was the test launch cadence and the FFA has cleared them for significantly more launch’s this next year. Both the development of Blue Origin’a New Glen and SpaceX’s Starship have been delayed significantly by the slow processing at the FFA and EPA (they have the speed and efficiency of the Department of Licensing…😅). In part it is the increase in the demand for launch licenses, but also due to beuqacratic inefficiencies and over regulation.
