Boxing Day is so called because in the UK (certainly in England) servants were given gifts by their employers on St Stephens Day, the 26th of December to thank them for their work during the year. This was most often given in 'Christmas Boxes.' They often also gave 'Christmas Boxes' to the traders who supplied them regularly. This was most often money given in boxes. It is of course also still alternatively called St Stephen's Day (see King Wenceslas.) By the Victorian era the practice of giving gifts to all the family and close friends had become more widespread on (still on 26th December) and continued to evolve until we got the madness we have today. Sports did take place on 26th December, but mostly because people (of all classes) were taking time off work, which would begin again in earnest on Plough Monday in early January. 😊
