Wow, I've literally been searching for this movie for years and only found it just now. I saw the movie before and remembered liking it but forgot what it was called and since it is a fairly obscure film which is why I had such a hard time looking for it. That's crazy, I just stumbled across this video and the main character looked familiar, then as I heard the plot being explained I thought: "I've seen a movie like that and about 2 minutes into the clip I realized this was a tv show I had seen on Amazon. Actually it was a Pilot to what was to become a scifi TV series but it never got made. Scifi shows always get screwed by the companies that produce them. I wish that wasn't the case but that's capitalism for you.

As a Sci Fi fan, I feel that Networks are clueless. We hunger for good stories, good characters, good effects and continuity ..... Shows that they complete are abandoned for no other reason than a snap shot of viewership...not allowing time for the show to connect with a broader audience. Nobody is so melanated that they don't need skin protection from UV. I'm not saying that having dark skin doesn't help mediate sun damage, but there's noone who could go without any protection, so why not send people with the most useful skills. It looks like most of the colony project is composed of field workers, which is who you would want to accompany your scientists in a beachhead mission on a new potential colony site. If I were writing this for verisimilitude, the black male character we see would be a drilling foreman hired out of the oil fields of Nigeria because of his experience with heavy technical work in a dangerous environment - he would have taken the job because he assumed he would be shot at less often on an alien planet. His skin's UV tolerance wouldn't really figure. Of course, this assumes a very similar atmospheric composition to Earth's. If this is some kind of rocky desert planet with all of its water locked up in the crust, that's not really something you can take for granted. If I found a classical desert planet - one with little visible water or biological activity on the surface - and it still had an Earthlike atmosphere, I would even try settling there. I would assume that an event in the last few thousand years wiped the surface and that the atmosphere is not stable. There might be causes other than aerobic life that can cause an atmosphere to have free oxygen over geological time, but I wouldn't trust them.

Trailbreaking colony-making is a rare enough activity that we probably won't have an experience-tested set of expectations for doing the job until such time as it's happening a lot. Until that time comes, you want people who are comfortable with adapting their plans to new information while also being willing to ride a failing project all the way to the ground if it's critical enough. You want people with the self-reliance of mountain men and roughnecks, and the dogged determination to salvage an unwinnable situation of an airline pilot in a troubled aircraft. Intelligence and education both play a big role in those traits. You have to be educated in a field to be self-reliant. You have to be quick-witted to winnow down the information that education gives you in order to come up with the next thing to try when everything goes wrong at once. You can train people to be better at these things. Aside from making sure that they are competent in their field, or the closest thing that exists, part of what is taught to military recruits could be vital to keeping people alive.
