Astrophotography: A well studied galaxy, M77!

It is certainly frustrating when you get some rotation but your technique certainly did the trick and as you said, works great with a galaxy image with a lot of background empty space.

I imaged this a couple of years ago. It's on my Astrobin. I used an ioptron RC6 with a 294 MC pro. It's one of my favourites. You've done a fantastic job on your image.

Great work and final image! I've imaged a similar galaxy (M94) with the same camera and those outer portions are nearly impossible to process. I think these kind of targets need really dark skies to get good detail on the faint parts.

Thanks! Yea.. these are so difficult. I was tempted to take much longer subs and process it as an HDR target.. but I was ready to move on. I may give that a try on a different galaxy this season.

Very nice image. Walking us through your workflow adds a new level of appreciation. Edge HD8 with a focal reducer for an image scale of .61"pix? Would you rather have the higher resolution at f6.3 or 1.0"pix at f4? I have the 533mm and considering upgrading from my f4 6".

Thanks! Yea.. with the 294mm in bin 2 + the .7 reducer the image scale is around .64". For me, the image scale and f ratio would depend on the target. I have found that a large fov, sometimes the better resolution is not noticeable unless you pixel peep.
