Astrophotography Cameras: What's the Best Choice?
In this video, I explain the key differences between 3 astrophotography cameras, and what they're best at. I cover the pros and cons of each camera and share a number of example images using each.
Beginners often start out with a DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera because they are affordable and versatile - and I still think this is the best route to take.
Full Post: astrobackyard....

Going rate for a used Panasonic G7 is about £200. It can interval shoot (time lapse) up to 1 minute or B (bulb) on an interval timer. Also does dark frame. But you don't normally need to shoot for more than 20 seconds and then stack. You can use what would be very high ISO numbers that you wouldn't dare use on most DSLR. For astro though you do need a short length camera adapter, a T2 to M4/3, not the normal long length lens adapter, look for astro eyepiece (T2) to M4/3 adapters not lens adapters. The sensor has to at be some 17 to 20mm not the full 45mm needed for a mirror box SLR lens. Going up to one of the pro M4/3 like GH4 or E-M5, they hold their price. Going down from prosumer to consumer, they don't shoot intervals. With the Olympus E-M5ii the body stabilisation on a tripod for long exposures works well. Normal advise is turn stabilisation off but the Olympus has the best, and it works. Electronic noise degradation up to a minute is unnoticeable, much over that the Olympus sensor gets warm where Panasonic (except the new ones with body IS) stay cool; they both use the same make sensors.

It’s true, just means you should save a little longer! Before you purchase!! If you get your ‘second’ choice, it will annoy you in time!!! Yes $200-500 more is a lot, but within a few weeks months after making your second choice purchase, and u see tour 1st choice and think that if only I waited!!!😱😱😱👍🏼. We all have choices take care be safe!!!

@curlywurly4436
@curlywurly4436 4 жыл бұрын
@@halowars337 Depends on the camera model and what you are trying to photograph, but generally yes. I use myself an DSLR (Canon Eos 450d) i bought for 55$ on Ebay and the results are great. The lens should be ok, but you should start out with low magnification. A good option for starters would be the Omegon LX 2/3, which is a tracking mount, it costs 129-190€ and can be mounted to an standard tripod. Its great for widefield long exposures.

If going the DSLR route, certainly look at the Pentax line. Their full-frame K1-ii has a built-in AstroTracer function (exclusive to Pentax) that allows star tracking for 5-minute exposures _without_ an auxiliary tracking device. Other Pentax models can do the same thing with a $150 accessory. It uses precise GPS tracking to control the movement of the camera's sensor to track against the Earth's rotation. It also tags your photos with GPS coordinates, of course. The K1-ii is also the best landscape camera in its price range.
@tkimaginestudio
@tkimaginestudio 4 жыл бұрын
Many Pentax DSLR models have a built-in "astrotracer" feature or can work with an astrotracer accessory part, which uses sensor movement (including rotation) to compensate for earth's rotation. This is a great way to do longer exposures without involving an equatorial mount.
@clyroth1504
@clyroth1504 Жыл бұрын
Late, but - I have the K-70 w/ astrotracer, this camera doesn't have onboard GPS so the accessory you mention was the O-GPS1 hot shoe GPS module. When I bought it, it was nearly half the price of the K-70. There's a newer O-GPS2 version that just over a hunnit bucks or so right now. The K-1 and other Pentax cams have onboard GPS.

Canon definitely has the market share of astrophotography users. Great cameras with good results. What a lot of people don't realize is that the Nikon D5100 , D5500 and D7000 all use the sony imx071 sensor. This is a great aps-c sized sensor and is used in the ZWO asi071 dedicated astro camera. And you can pick up any of those cameras used for around $300-$400 canadian. I've got a modified D7000 and just picked up a D5100 for $300 and left it stock.

As mount I was looking at the SkyWatcher Star Adventurer Pro, but it may be limit with a Scope + guiding scope and Nikon Z. So I may go for a full goto mount like the SW HEQ5pro or the Celestron Advanced VX. I'm also in Canada, and won't probably shoot in the winter times as cold is harsh for hardware and gears. You can do pretty good with rgb osc , one thing that's good about mono + rgb filters is that it dose a better job on cheaper refractors being able to focus the blue channel individually overcoming bloated stars a bit Better, I wouldn't put that mono is far far better then a colour camera but more flexible to use in a sence. I use mono and still find the need to have a osc for those events like comets and Luna eclipse, for those quick motion targets.

One of the interesting things about Astronomy is not the equipment but the large amounts of people in one place that, if they were into Cars, they would recommend Porsche cars to soccer moms and claim that anything less than a Porsche, then they might as well not bother. I remember one guy trying to pressure a disabled person into buying an 8inch dob as his first scope (because anything less is a waste of time he claimed), i stepped in and till this day, that disabled person is still happy with an 80mm refractor because its easier to use than a Newtonian from a wheelchair because the eyepiece is more accessible from the bottom rather than at the top part of the telescope. Its the same with cameras for astronomy. I have seen amazing pictures taken with an S9 and S10 phone rigged up to an eyepiece, same with modified webcams and even the cheepo SvBony cameras. You don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy astronomy but the people who try to make out that everything has to be the equivilant of a Porsche give astronomy a bad name.

Great video and explanation of the differences between the three types of cameras and their applications, especially for a newbie like me. You mentioned a star tracker. At about 1:51 into your video, it shows a camera mounted on, what looked like to me, an equatorial telescope mount without the OTA. Is the device it's mounted to a telescope mount, or is it some type of star tracker designed specifically for a camera to be mounted to it?

If you had to chose between buying the newer A7R4 and the A7R3 from Sony, which one would you take? I would like to use it mostly for landscape photography and astrophotography. The 61 Megapixel sensor on the newer one is better for detail but also adds more noise during night shots, i can't really decide.

Very informative! I recently got the ZWO 1600MM-Pro, I had a patch of clear skies here and there, but have yet to get a night where I can really try it out. - Colin

Trevor, do you feel the Canon 6D Mark II is still one of the "ideal" full-frame DSLR cameras for astrophotography? I have enjoyed my unmodified T3i, but I want to upgrade to something with better noise ratio, resolution, video quality, sensor size, etc., but I wasn't sure if the 6D Mark II was still the camera of choice. Is there a newer one that puts the 6D Mark II to shame, both in price and features?

Whats the best lens for either Canon T8i or Canon 90D? I mean the best lens not best budget. THE BEST. I need the price to be under 1200$. Also is Canon T8i or Canon 90D good for Astrophotography? Which one between the two is better?

I'm just getting started and this certainly cleared some things up. I have a mirrorless camera so i guess i will use that. What type lens should i be using. I only have a kit lens atm. Or should i be sticking it in my skystar reflector which has focal length of 650. Thanks!

Hi Trevor. Hi Rudy. A really naive (no physics background) question. If I use the monotone setting and take multiple photos while using the onboard colour filters and stack them in post production can I improve upon the rgb throughput? Thanks in advance.

Option 4: cheap DSLR, DIY removal of the hot mirror, DIY removal of the bayer layer, and there you go. Monochrome camera and utilizing ALL the sensor.

These videos are so good . Thank you very much for posting them . I would like to buy a mirror less camera , but I have no idea what all the technical specs mean . Would you mind recommending a Canon mirror less camera for under $ 1000 . I want to get started in this hobby by taking wide angle and deep space pictures with a tracking mount for long exposures. Thank you for the help - Rob
