I can tell that this is a great laptop. I have it for almost a week and yes in gaming it is really noisy but when you use it for videos or daily office its virtually silent because it turns off the fans. Basically 0db noise. RAM is upgradable to 64GB and I have ordered mine like so. There is only one thing that bugs me though. I know they did it to save power but on 3d programs for modelling or texturing when you leave the laptop for several minutes it actually switches between RTX and AMD graphics and this causes the 3d software to crash. But thankfully this is an option that can be turned off for the sake of battery life of course :D

I have an ASUS G531GU and the best way to open it up to work on it without worrying about the LED connectors is to (after unscrewing) prop that panel up against something away from you (with the cables still connected, yes) and just work on the laptop upside down. As long as you can reach the parts and do the work, it really doesn't need those cables disconnected and it really doesn't need to be facing you from any specific direction. I think iirc I propped my back panel up against a cardboard box and then clipped the panel's edge to the box edge with a chip bag clip. Same method applies with this G17 or the G15. It isn't necessary to actually unplug those wires to do most work inside. You just kinda need the back panel out of the way enough.

Fan noise is not really a valid complaint on this laptop. With the included Armoury Crate software, you have full control over the fans. If you want it to be quieter, switch to the Silent profile or create your own. What the high fan speeds do is allow performance you would *never* see out of a quieter machine. Also... you say your desktop has a "much faster solid state drive". Not sure what that would be, considering the SSD in this laptop is an M.2 PCIe 3.0 SSD that is about as fast as consumer drives get, both in desktops and laptops. Last thing: I have this laptop, and switching out the 2x8GB stock memory for 2x16GB dual rank ram makes a significant difference in performance (even with identical memory clock/timings). Up to 15% in many games (Shadow of the Tomb Raider went from 101fps to 117fps for me), and that 3DMark CPU score will go up by about 1000pts. Well worth doing.
@TheWolfX100

Ive had it for over a month now and the fan noise isnt a issue. Its very quiet and will only make some noice when set up to turbo while gaming (and even then it doesnt bother me much). Perfect laptop imo. A bit pricey if u are in Europe but def worth it.

I'm curious about something. Does Asus come out of the box with the advanced display settings set to the high refresh, or did you have to change the Windows default from 60 to the correct 300? I've seen far too many people with high refresh monitors still using the default 60 without realizing it does not auto adjust to the highest refresh. I look forward to the day we can have incredible performance like this with quieter or no fans. One of these days!

Fan noise is the best part🤣 it lets you know you doing something special. I personally don't mind it, Laptop speakers ain't really meant for gaming and I usually always use a headset, may I be gaming or using it for general things. If I need to hear something I either am using a Bluetooth speaker or Headset. I am one of the individuals that would rather have a gaming laptop with a larger shell to accommodate the cooling and even be fine with no integrated speakers for extra cooling.

@@catzzdogzz5228 So far the GE66 performs noticeably better on my 3440x1440 monitor than the G15. Im talking 10-20fps better, noticeably smoother, and temps are good. The G15 is having an issue with the Radeon software failing when my external monitor is connected. It doesn't affect anything but there's an error box I have to dismiss every. single. reboot. Also while I was watching Gizmo's stream last night with the G15 on battery on my lap, it got almost uncomfortably warm. I'll be honest, I love the build, speakers, screen of the G15, but I might be swinging back towards the GE66. Basically, for desk/monitor use, the GE66 is winning handily. For actual "lap" top use, I'm concerned at how uncomfortable the G15 got. But a lapdesk can fix that, and I have a nice one. I haven't really tested the GE66 as a "lap" top yet, so I need to do that. Now my mind is running mental gymnastics to try to justify keeping them both LOL. BTW in terms of benchmarks, I tested timespy and firestrike, G15 wins handily on CPU (not surprisingly, especially since I have the 6-core GE66), and the GE66 wins in graphics but not by much. 8.6% gpu win in timespy. 11.7% gpu win in firestrike. Not a lot benchmark-wise, but in actual games I'm seeing the GE66 having a bigger win than that, on my external monitor.

@@shirokuro73 I got the g15 tonight. Comparing the g15 and the strix g17 right now. If I was still in college 1 year ago when I was going to the libraries and lectures with my laptop. Hands down the g15. Runs games good enough at 1440P by my standards. But that being said, the g17 definitely gets more fps when they are both tested at 1080p ( G15 = 86fps, g17 = 98fps). Question is, do my eyes and brain actually see a different between 86 and 98? ( Probs not). And the g15 blows it out of the park in terms of build, sound, and screen. It would've been an obvious choice for me to pick the g15 1 year ago. But since im no longer a student, I really do appreciate a 17inch screen. When im in hotels gaming or anywhere on the move. Honestly my perfect laptop would be a 17 inch version of the g15. And i could go with the qhd strix scar g17 ( But i dont like the idea of dishing out another $1000 and still having a plastic frame). Hard choice. I also dont want to buy a 5th laptop in the past 6 months lmfao. But Im 90% sure im sticking with the strix g17. Yea, it has some cons. But its a beast and its cheap. What did you end up with?

The last gen Strix hero 3 was worse with the led lighting, it had two ribbon cables and if you tried to pull up the locking arm on the connector even with your finger nail, it would break. In mine I ended up putting double sided tape on a small foam pad to keep pressure on the connectors just for the lights to continue to work. Cabled should have been wider, with a better connector like a keyboad connector etc. Or spring based cable less contact pads.

What someone needs to develop is a 'laptop' docking station which docks to those back sockets and converts USB3.2.1.56.2 etc to Thunderbolt out on the back. If small enough you could leave the 'dock' on.

12:10 Yeah, "Big" is relative. Modern 17" laptops are physically the size of 15" of just a few years ago, thanks to thin bezels. It's size was something I had huge concerns up until I received it, the only reason for that being me being stuck in the past, still thinking that 17" laptops gotta be huge. Nope. As for the back panel, I had to remove it a couple times in the past few days while gradually upgrading ram and ssd (a note to others, at least my model does NOT support M.2 SATA SSDs, only M.2 NVME drives, at least I did not find any ways to enable it in bios), just "unclick" it carefully along all edges, and then open it like a book. Look at LED ribbon cables, they will allow it to open to one of the sides completely without disconnecting. +1 to Ansh Arora and everyone else saying that fan noise is not bad at all. For example I was upgrading to this laptop from my Node 304 desktop PC with i5 8600K and GTX1080, all Noctua fans, main being NH14 monster (barely fits in the case lol). Under load with fans at top speeds in terms of dB I think they were about equal, with laptop having a slightly higher pitched sound, which is a tad more annoying than desktop, but not that much really. After just a bit of listening I realied that if I did not have my headphones on I would be annoyed by both of them in the same way. HOWEVER, with all the power that this laptop is packing and the one-button ability to change it's power mode most of the time even in some games it does not break a sweat and in the end it has to ramp up it's fans way less than my previous desktop. I'm also planning on getting a cooling pad for my desk setup, it should help keep it cooler and make it use it's fans even less. And overall the most noise that comes from the laptop's cooling is not from it's fans per-se, it's from air moving, I did not hear any motor whine or anything like that. At least now as it's new. We'll see how it goes.

@nixellion
@nixellion 2 жыл бұрын
@@braukwood925 All great, except for one annoying 'bug' that makes the entire desktop freeze for like half a second, on average once a day, most notably while watching videos in the browser. So far it's more of an annoyance, the only thing where I believe it would really matter is when working with live audio performances, that stutter could ruin a take, but other than that it does not seem to affect anything internally, like audio _recording_ seems to be working fine during the stutter. Also this does not show up in Linux, only on Windows. There are discussions of this issue on Reddit and LTT forums, seems like quite a few people have it with 2021 G17 Ryzen laptops. So far the general belief is there is some chipset firmware bug or something like that. But while it is more of an annoyance than a problem for my daily use of it, and one that's rare enough to not even get mad about, it's a serious enough issue for me to NOT recommend anyone to buy this particular model. I hear that Lenovo Legions are all the rage when it comes to alternatives. That said I LOVE the mechanical keyboard on G17. It's clicky but not too loud, and I like the tactile feel of it. And I am daily driving Cherry MX Browns keyboard, so it's not like I don't have anything to compare it to.

@@braukwood925 It's not a bad laptop, it has great awesome specs, mechanical keyboard that very few laptops have, and it's price for it's specs is awesome. Literally the only gripe with it is this random stutter\freezing issue, and as far as I can tell it's a lottery. So you could go for it, just if you notice any stutters like the ones I'm talking about - RMA it right away. And be ready for it.

Hey thanks for the review. If you were a software developer (so typing frequently on this keyboard) with a secondary use of music production and an additional perk of some very light gaming would you get this? I am debating between this and a Mac. Mac has its advantages for music with drivers but also huge disadvantages in software updates and compatible VSTs so I'm not looking for a windows vs Mac comparison, just strictly if you have ever typed on a newer MacBook Pro vs this keyboard.

@archardor3392
@archardor3392 3 жыл бұрын
Its the other way around usually but it depends on what supply retailers have and what seems to sell better. The more sought after is more expensive. When the G17s start to collect dust, stores usually drop their prices below the G15s, but that only happens if they start collecting dust in the first place. Otherwise, the bigger laptops will cost more, more materials.
