At the beginning of the video he was like "This is a very expensive laptop" and later he was drilling holes in the motherboard searching for one track. Unbelievable. Mr. Sorin is legendary :)

For the past 5 years I've been watching this Channel, this is by far the hardest repair I've seen. I mean how am I to know Gate and source are allowed to shorted together for some strange reasons. I'm really glad you were able to retrace your steps and fix the laptop. This repair is made for legends only not for people like us. I'm sure the mobo designer was biting his finger hoping don't find that ID pin. 😂

Just revived my dead SPA942 IP phone thanks to binge watching Sorin for the last few years. I opened the board and found that the phone received only 3.5V from the 5V 1.2A adapter. So I took my bench supply and fed the phone 5V 1.2A and the phone worked perfectly. Took an old micro USB adapter, rewired and my IP phone works like new and my adapter now has a longer cable and more wattage. Thank you Sorin!

The (intentionally) shorted mosfet took you into a rabbit hole, but your experience and proper logic thinking got you out of it.Well done Sorin, many would have drowned there!

Wow most would of given up on this I think, but not Sorin. Getting that tiny track half way down the layers exposed and then micro soldering was very skilful. Learning so much from these videos ...Excellent repair! 👍
@billyjames98615 ай бұрын
The first person who soldered the charging port didn't do it correctly - IE: There was no solder in the two tiny holes - Sorin told himself for some mysterious reason that this laptop has no charger ID Pin - But it did/has - All he had to do was put solder into those two tiny holes and solder the charging port back properly.

it's amazing he found the issue but that's not micro soldering.... that's another level of skill, different mentality and different equipment is required.

The first guy that tried to repair it really messed up that port. Probably his mess that caused the chip to short in the first place. That was a good find Sorin - a tough one. Way beyond my skill level - its always a pleasure watching a master at work!

I accept your words (14:30 - 17:00) as a technician. We are at a heavy risk each time, we encounter a repair where something might go wrong beyond our control. I too was charging a very low price for repairs. As you said, I did not value my repair skills, I was charging lower prices. If a dead motherboard is received for repair we need not worry about the mistakes that we make while repairing, cuz, it is already in no power condition. Recently, I received a laptop that works fine only the problem was the DVD drive was not detected. Usually, I'm very careful in handling motherboard with voltages, I don't step my foot on the ground while checking with voltage. However, when I tried to measure the voltage on the DVD SATA connector of 5V Run power. The probe mistakenly slipped and shorted 5VS supply line and data line of SoC. The result was a catastrophe. High voltage with high current hit SOC. Now I have to replace the SOC or motherboard. I was really upset about the mistake and costs me 300$ to change SOC. After watching your video I realized, that I should charge high for these repairs depending on the expensiveness of the laptop. Thanks for your advice

Soren, I have to tell you, I love your channel, dedication and expertise. 90% of the time I’m learning something new from you, but I was way ahead of you on this one, even though I don’t work on notebooks or laptops. This biggest clue was the first sight of the extra pins on the power connector. When you kept having this ongoing voltage I had wondered if it was voltage from the circuit looking for that possible switch on the connector. I noticed your mistakes here was the ORDER of probability. First see if mosfet is shorted in circuit, but you never tested it OUT of circuit. That could have saved you hours. You progressed to thermal failure of parts which is always possible but rare. When I first saw all those pins on the connector, I said to myself I hope he noticed that.

Whenever one mentions low melt solder I think of solder that has high bismuth content and remains liquid and aids in removing charging ports etc. Low melt solder has less lead and should not be used as final soldering since it is more brittle than normal solder. For ports I would get rid of all the old solder put the port in and ensure it is siting flush with the board. That way you ensure that the solder on the ground legs flow all the way through and makes a secure bond with both sides of the board. Maybe it is just me.

One of my last jobs before I moved from the US was an older man with a dead bios battery in a laptop, you could see the battery removing the hard drive cover, but you couldn't get to it. I told him $70, and I would split the case, replace the battery and repast CPU and clean the fan, he got all upset and said,"that's outrageous". Handed him his laptop and said thanks for stopping by. (gtfo) politely. People are interesting, that's a fact.

This is exactly the computer I want to buy when I go to university. I was so scared when you started drilling into the board looking for something you didn't know existed. Awesome job, frustrating but your perseverance paid off. The wire on the charging port seems a bit fragile, maybe an idea would be to see where it is connected to on the pcb (I do this searching with one probe on the point I know so this would be the track you exposed, and put the other probe in a ball of copper wire wool and touch the pcb part by part till I find continuity) and solder the wire to that point.
