Sorin if you can't solder the new MOSFETs because the solder don't stick on it, is because the silver layer oxidate over time because they take the components out of the vacuum enclosure.. You have to polish first and tin it.

Yeah, I've had the same problem with new chips. The manufacturer told me that I have to let it in a furnace with a controlled temperature of 100ºC *for 24h* to remove humidity and the oxidation layer before installation - something that I doubt anyone does.

8:55 just buy fibreglass pen - it will scratch gently remove the oxidation, and you can use is also when you want to do a jump wire (to easly remove the solder mask ). Or if you don't want to buy it, then use a sand paper or precision knife to scrap that oxidation. The mosfet is good and original, but It was storage in bad condition, that is why the pads are more grey, not shiny.
@GregM

If you use a fibreglass pen use ahdesive tape to pick up any the fibreglass fibers afterwards. You do not want fibreglass on your skin especially if you are sensitive to it.

@barryw.9419

Absolutely thermal pad is the longevity solution. Unless I'm wrong; I noted the highest heat point was actually the middle inductor coil. Similar to MSI gaming unit's; seeing thermal pads particularly at BGA covering both coils, and mosfet's. Looking specifically at Mosfet temps. it looked to me as though mosfet temperatures seemed relatively uniform. 100% agree with your analysis, and practical theory, including the diagnosis as manufacturers design defect ! Luv your channel, Thank you sir.

Good observation! I never though of that but it seems pretty logic the center mosfet will get hotter. Shame on me! kkkkkk 4:30 Not a different manufacturer, that first line is code for assembly plant, date and lot. The logo difference is probably due to a different factory/building of the same manufacturer (or it's counterfeit, but I don't think so because I have seen that difference before). Onsemi has plants in several places and they produce quality components. We don't really know how the seller is storing their supplies and for how long it was stored, it seems that some oxidation formed on that mosfet pins. When the new part has a dull color like that I always clean it with some acid before soldering. New components are never shiny, of course, but that one was too much opaque to me. 19:00 that thermalpad is usually over the coils. Better if you let it over the coils and yours over the mosfets, double protection!

If a thin sheet of aluminum with two anchors had been placed on top of these three components (like the one used in TV tuners and/or cell phone), I think it would be a feasible solution for the new boards that this manufacturer will build. Another way of saying it, it's up to Asus engineers, not us, that is, it's up to them. All the best.

@Ed Boss: It's normal, it doesn't matter; (5:42) Notice that both top left pins are soldered into a wide (thick) circuit line leading to one end of an smd ceramic capacitor. On the other hand, if the two pins in the upper right corner were soldered together, then we DO have a problem (short circuit) since they go one by one to each end of the small black body smd component. All the best.

@carlosgarciaoropeza5480
@carlosgarciaoropeza5480 Жыл бұрын
@SidneyCritic: Hi. (4:07) The three part numbers of those coils located just below each Mosfet are similar, so in theory the resistance should be the same value but we don't usually want to unsolder them, so if we have different readings between them it is due to the resistance added by the other components mounted (related to them) on the PCB. Due to the area where they are mounted, the values should be [0.2 - 100] ohms, that is, less than one hundred ohms. All the best.
@SidneyCritic

@@carlosgarciaoropeza5480 Usually VRMs are in parallel, ie same resistance, but I was thinking it might be something like a graphics card. Basically GPUs have identical VRMs, but some are for VRAM and some are for GPU, ie, different loads. I was only interested in the resistance on the load side, so it's just a measure from the coil/inductor side to GND. It was a long-shot that they are separate, but it would've been nice if it was confirmed - I've noticed Sorin glosses over most stuff, ie, he knows in his head, but never tells us -. Oh well

I'm confused! MOSFETs are positive temperature coefficient devices. Therefore, as the temperature of the device increases, the resistance increases. In other words, higher temperatures result in lower currents, thereby surely working less, not more?

Maybe... Use 2 very thin pads with aluminium wedge between and this will dump the heat better to the cover, than a big chunk of pad or pads as when thick they resist heat more. Unless the part expands a lot, i use thin .5mm pads to transfer the heat as much as possible to copper or Aluminium. Gaming Mosfets can get really hot and you only had it idling, so really hot when running hard? No wonder they fail early. Maybe ASUS could use heavy mosfets to take the stress??

Yeah. Okay. Mosfet stays. New or used driver IC. Another similar coil from a donor. Thermal camera, IPA and my finger (touch). Monitor temperature every half hour for a day and leave it on all night. Sorin i'm presently suffering an serious issue with an cheap ASUS laptop and i'm becoming distrusting of the manufacturer even more so with his recent AMD chip burning issue and not honouring warranties with his "dodgy" BIOS updates thats right Sorin he's the real one who is seriously dodgy...but what does all of this say about the quality of materials if your having to "tin" with solder those Mosfets? never mind the heat dissipation issue which he has clearly missed after all its not really your place to put this manufacturer right but as you can see you obviously are...I swear i'm never going to purchase anything from this manufacturer again i've had it up to here with him and the dead laptop i'm left with...
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz Жыл бұрын
Well it's not like he's buying the MOSFET from ASUS. The MOSFET probably spent 10+ years at parts supplier on the way to him and grew a hard oxide layer, maybe it wasn't handled very well. So MOSFET rejecting solder is just unfortunate but neither here nor there, does not reflect badly on ASUS anyhow. The rest of the issues do reflect badly on them.
