From what i understood the laptop is very fast as long as you don't install too many application, the reason is ASUS who install SSD's with low random IOPS speeds (they overlooked this SSD spec or they don't have the knowledge). As soon as you run more and more apps (processes) the random IOPS speeds is critical. This makes the laptops suddenly feel much slower then when they came out of the box for testing. To really test laptops, testers should install a reall ammount of applications to simulate real world situations. And Asus should install samsung SSD's which have much higher random IOPS then other SSD brands. Especially on their gaming laptops...or laptops where the ssd can't easily be replaced. I installed a samsung 990 pro and my new laptop suddenly feels like a monster, the SSD clearly was a the bottleneck. Unfortunally you can't see this bottle neck in the system monitoring, which only measures sequential speeds. There the disk activity looked fine...while it actually was not. Testing random IOPS is difficult, but real workloads need it badly.

Could you make a direct comparison against the Zenbook S 16, with the Zen5 chip?
@NotebookcheckReviews2 ай бұрын
Well, i added it to most of our comparison graphs. What are you missing?
@systemBuilder2 ай бұрын
It's hard to compare against the zenbook s16 which is my laptop because it has a screen that is 30% larger, sucking MUCH MORE power, and a huge 78wh battery. The laptops aren't really in the same class. Zenbook S16 is for programming and "WOW" factor and it cripples the 890m due to the 33w power limit. Because of this power limit the 890m is less than 10% faster than the 880m so i bought the hx365 model with 880m, giving up ~1.33 p-cores (c-cores run at 2/3rd the speed of p-cores) and 8gb of ram, saving $300 ... The vivobook S14 is much more comparable because it has 50w cooling ability to get the most out of the 890m, but stupidly, Asus doesnt offer vivobook S14/hx370 in north america (only in europe with a WUXGA screen...) If you are programming using pmake (parallel make) or doing 3D or encoding / decoding and can benefit from the huge 16" screen the Zenbook S16 is your laptop. Its not the greatest for gaming due to the hard 33w power limit ...
@Gustavo_StАй бұрын
@@systemBuilder Thanks for that. I understand the Zenbook S 16 will ship in both Strix Point and Lunar Lake platforms, won´t it? They are both listed on Asus Global Website as UM5606 (Strix Point) and UX5606 (Lunar Lake). This would provide a perfect comparison between the platforms.
@pixeled-2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the very nice review, presented in manner that is very pleasing to the eye! :) I personally agree with your conclusion of Intel moving in the right direction, but I am missing your view on one important aspect: price point. It's hard to determine price/performance ratio (i.e. the actual value, in my opinion) without a price! Taking a quick look at the Asus store for my country I noticed this laptop with Intel's 258V CPU was listed for €1730 (grey) or 1800 (white) and I think that is just absolutely bonkers. For about €100 more you buy the Asus Zephyrus G16 with an AMD HX 370, 32GB RAM and an RTX 4060 here, which is also crazy expensive but also offers more value (imho). My point being: the laptop may be nice, but seeing how it's performing more or less the same as the latest AMD and Qualcomm SoCs yet costing hundreds of euro's more, I'm not seeing this fly off of the shelves just yet.
@NotebookcheckReviewsАй бұрын
Price is always a little tricky for us. Some of our videos have a very long shelf life, and prices fluctuate and vary significantly between markets. But I understand that it is a very important factor to consider when shopping for a new notebook. The Zenbook is definitely a very expensive piece of tech, but it comes with the "experience" to match in terms of chassis quality, a great screen, great speakers for this class of devices, stellar inputs, and pretty solid IO. So you are not just paying for the performance but for the whole package. Let us see how things develop once more devices are available.

I was almost tempted by the AMD 370 but Lunar Lake looks more silent (or I am an Intel snob, idk). If they offered a fanless version (5-7W CPU usage) with a 16' screen, that would be my ideal laptop. Those two fans frighten me, to be honest, why do you need that much active cooling for dissipating 20W... or is it really the GPU that would be capped seriously without them?
@NotebookcheckReviews2 ай бұрын
Well, the Core Ultra can go beyond 20W in the Zen book, so I would assume that to keep both the internal and chassis temperatures in check, you might just be better off with an active cooling solution. From what we have been told, Lunar Lake performs quite well in the 10-17W range, which would translate to somewhere between the Zenbooks Whisper and Standard mode. Theoretically, it should be possible to call that passively.
@szaboaz2 ай бұрын
@@NotebookcheckReviews Thanks. If we can have the best of both worlds, and enjoy the silence with passive cooling for most of the time, while utilising real performance by tolerating a little whoosh, then I'm all for it.
@systemBuilder2 ай бұрын
If you want to do any code development get the Zen5 S16 you'll benefit a lot from the 20-24 threads in pmake .. I own a Zenbook hx365 and here is why the fans are large. The laptop is too danged thin and tries to suck air in through the speakers and push out above the keyboard through TINY holes! A thicker laptop like the vivobook or zephyrus can suck air in through the sides and spit heat out the sides, but the S16 is just too thin for that more efficient ventilation setup ... When you are gaming the GPU is taking roughly 2/3rds of the power. The reason GPUs are getting faster now is that CPU power efficiency is causing them to SIP power which is then GUZZLED by the GPU ...

does anybody used them in AI tasking? wondering if NPU on Core ultra 256v is comparable to 1050/2050 m-GPU power ? Currently I don't see any advantages on buying laptop even Asus promotes them as AI-powered ones. experts tolds that it would be really hard to run model to utilize both NPU and iGPU at same time.

For $300 more is it worth getting the Asus Zenbook 14 Pro Oled (13th i9/4070)?
@systemBuilder2 ай бұрын
These are desktops pretending to masquerade as laptops. If you don't mind burnt thighs and being plugged into the wall 24/7 then a 13th gen with a 4070 on a clearance price might be acceptable. I had a macbook pro 2019 6 core Intel processor and it sucked so much power that it died even while plugged in @95w apple oem charger (streaming a meeting). The next time I buy Intel is never!
@NotebookcheckReviews2 ай бұрын
@systembuilder this is hardly a fair comparison. @youngfigaro I really enjoyed the Zenbook Pro, and if you can make use of the Nvidia card, be it for work or games, it might be worth it! Have you seen our review: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHKamXahbJiDpM0si=XmLzYXESPKoql0KE

My comments are valid. If gaming is your main purpose by all means get the 4070 beast but dont expect it to behave much like a laptop because its just an LSO (laptop shaped object) sacrificing battery life, weight, and usability actually on your lap.

@@NotebookcheckReviews I think in terms of apples price policy for storage upgrades ther may be a few more persons be interested in that information, as i think its a quite big difference paying for 512 Gb to 2 TB upgrade 690€ or paying 120€ in the aftermarket and get a spare 512 GB Drive. or paying for the 512 GB to 4 TB upgrade 1380€ or paying 240€ in the aftermarket and get a 512 GB spare drive. With less insane upgrade prices from apples side it wouldn't be that kind of discussion. in terms of 8TB drives the difference is slightly smaller in price/TB as there only a few available.

The big advantage Intel has made is that Intel laptops seem to have caught up with Apple, alongside AMD. That being said losing to AMD',s Zen 5 Strix Point is very disappointing in the battery life contest, but this is one sample size. Maybe AMD has better idle power consumption. The graphics upgrade with Lunar Lake seems to be a major generation update as well. Asus laptops seem to be getting better. We'll see how Asus goes against the competition.

My disappointment with Intel Qualcomm and AMD for these new mobile CPUs is not that they are bad they are exactly what was needed. It is the price if they wanted an m1 moment 4 years later they needed to have these launch in 500$ notebook and below. Apple has m1 and M2 notebooks at cheaper prices than what we are seeing today. There selling battery life as a premium feature. They will get this with a trickle down effect. And I am sure the bean counters did the math. It was better to not rule this years back to school like so they can try to finish the stock of 10th gen laptops before Intel stops supporting them

The only time I was in the market for a thin and light notebook was back in 2005 when I bought a netbook. (yeah yeah I know). So I am definitely not a potential customer for such a laptop today. Even if I had money I wouldn't buy one for the form factor. It looks interesting and it is good to see Intel improving their performance on the iGPU side. I don't know how they are handling older games as from what I have heard they had issues with their Arc line with that. I also don't know how they will support it with drivers as the graphics driver support by Intel has always been....crap. Hopefully they changed their attitude in the recent years. I didn't see anything about temps. I don't know if I missed that part or not. One last thing, not sure why exactly, but I really like how this laptop looks. From purely aesthetic pov.
