Asylum seekers reject NYC shelter citing bad living conditions

Some asylum seekers are choosing to sleep on the streets after New York City officials attempted to move them from a Manhattan hotel to a temporary shelter at a cruise terminal in Brooklyn. NBC’s Valerie Castro spoke to some of the men who are protesting the move as they claim the shelter conditions are unliveable.

They have complained since day one. They complained about the buses, meanwhile they were air conditioned buses. They complained they didn't have food to eat on the buses, yes, they did, and the buses were also equipped with movies for their kids to watch on the journey. Apparently they thought we were going to transport them in the First Class cabin of an airline. They get to NYC, are put in lux hotels, and they complained about that, and tossed the food they were given into the garbage, they apparently are too sophisticated to eat sandwiches, banish the thought. Im all for people having opportunities for a better life. Im also for helping where we can for those in need. We never know if it will be us needing others for something or another. But the cost to continue providing at the hotel is exorbitant. Be grateful that basic needs are met and then, like the men said, "They are warriors" When you are starting over, most start at the bottom and begin again. They came with nothing, willing to risk it all. The new shelter is good enough for America's homelessness as they are provided very similar accommodations, nothing more. America is open for immigration or for those seeking asylum. America has laws, rules and procedures that must be obey not only for it's citizen but for everyone to step on the land. You can't just cross our border and claim for asylum . Go to the Port of Entry just like everyone else turn in your application and wait for your scheduled appointment for your interview. The conditions do not look that bad. They have a warm dry place to sleep with clean water and bathwelfare. I assume its safe. Providing better accommodation is not the question we should be asking but instead how to integrate them into our society. Employment and possibly citizenship should be a priority. I'm glad they changed the requirements for staying at the hotel. I suspect that freedom to come and go, party and shop as they please with the money they are receiving is playing a role in not wanting to stay at the shelter. Well our prison system has dorms for the majority of inmates. American citizens. Dorms do not violate their constitutional rights. The big difference is in the shelter they can come and go as they please,. There must be rules though like curfew and no alcohol or drugs in the shelter.. 3 hots , cot, showers, and heat is way more than our homeless have. When are Americans going to get smart and force our govt to do more about this situation.

They should've seen where I grew up in Brooklyn. It was small and filthy and crime ridden but my parents worked multiple jobs and things kept getting better. Millions of people from all over the world came to New York and made it work.

Asylum isn't meant for people looking for a better life, there are other ways to immigrate to the U.S. for that, and the line is long. Homeless People have always felt safer being outside in New York City rather than the city shelters because of the way they are run. .. crime-ridden hellholes. Before giuliani became mayor back in the day, they used to let them hang out in grand central station so they wouldn't freeze to death. You'd see them sitting on the hard floor with their backs against the walls not bothering anybody just looking totally abandoned and like the world didn't care. . Because it didn't. These were human beings. Then giuliani came in as mayor and he forced them all out, trying to make them go to the shelters or get arrested. Shelters were so bad many of them chose to just go outside and die out there in the brutal winters. Great guy, Rudy.

Shelters in NY are good for horror writers. Not only are the conditions deplorable, but also they openly harass newcomers, do not help out much with housing, and sleep deprivation, a form of psychological torture, are commonplace. I worked for 35 years until the advent of Covid, and now I find myself jobless, without having even a phone to get a job, and ridiculed at my efforts by institutions that my hard-earned money paid in taxes for three a half decades. I owe child support to my sons, it is all very disheartening.
