Asylum: The Life of Erving Goffman aka Irving

In this video Mr Robert Pembroke described the text, 'Asylum' developed by Mr Erving Goffman aka Irving. The video described the tragedy that beset the Goffman family and the linkages that these tragic events had to the therapeutic relationship which the family was compelled to follow in their lives.
The Goffman narrative is a warning to us all about the excesses of the medical model.
There is also a rendition of the song, 'Old Sid' originally sung by Mr Daryl Braithwaite.

Superb and informative summary and contextualization of Goffman's ideas on asylums! As a fan of Goffman's work I really appreciate videos like this as he wasn't just an outstanding scientist but had an eventful life and was an interesting character himself. Thank you for the amazing content!

The text is a good primer to the study of institutional life which is seen as a first step in the development of understanding about the history of social control in the organizational management of prisons, asylums et cetera., If you wish then why not subscribe. Thanks for this. I watched this and then read Goffmans Wikipedia page, and you really filled in the blanks. I found this by scratching the surface on a response to a comment on a Discord server for George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. This period of history, and quite likely Goffman himself, has clearly been a massive influence on GRRM. The level of celebrity guys like RD Laing - and possibly Goffman, but I'm not finding much suggesting there was - was incredible, and their legacies are immense in society.
