Camo is one of those things that is extremely area specific. Here in the hardwoods of Missouri, I use Atacs AUX during the winter and M81 woodland in the other 3 seasons. During the transitions of spring and fall, I sometimes wear AU pants and a woodland top.

*I learned this from watching S2 Underground* Most military camo does not lose its effectiveness under IR lighting, its designed not to. It is possible, however, that when purchasing used, the seller had washed in a detergent with dyes causing you to "light up" under IR light. Keep this in mind and check with a night vision device if possible. Also wash in a detergent that meets mil-specs or at least is dye-free. I hope everyone is staying warm out there!

So I opened up the Pandora's Box of NIR and will say the subject needs a long video or series. I'm old enough to remember DIY Tide blacklight posters so I never wash my "woods" clothes in detergents. Now I'm questioning some of my gear I rit dyed. I'm going back to natural dyes, rattle canning and only buying from reputable mil spec dealers
@bh658
@bh658 2 жыл бұрын
@@swampwolf I also went and rewatched a few videos on the subject. I used to think hunting camo was made to absorb IR light but that isn't always true. You definitely never know what you have and I only have a cheap night vision monocular to test with. It's better than nothing though.

We used the old woodland back when I was in the Army in the early 90s, great camo. I'm also a fan of flectarn and the old Vietnam style tiger stripe, they both work well in a woodland environment.

I also have the ATACS-FG and AU, the stuff works really well in Georgia. What I have done in the past is put the article in the trees and plants up a trail, then walk back up the trail with somebody else or a camera to see which one is easier to spot. Last time I did this the ATACS-FG won out.

Dark colors look smaller and light colors look bigger. That's why bigger blotches of darker colors work better at a distance. A white shirt is not only the wrong color but will look huge. Think of the white tail deer. Difficult to see if facing you but obvious if you see the white tail.

I'm in extreme northern MN and in spring and the first half of summer, it's M81 woodland, OD green, or Multicam Tropic in these dense evergreen forests. Late summer and fall, all the way to the first snow that sticks, Multicam. Winter, Multicam Alpine till last significant snowfall.

In my AO we use 3 different types depending on area and time of year. Multicam works good as a general type due to amount of tan in it. Marpat desert for fall and winter, and believe it or not, ACU in the open sagebrush areas as long as you don’t silhouette yourself. There are several commercial types that blend in exceptionally well in the high country and Aspen patches. Everybody will need something a little different.

I'm convinced RB and the 69 pattern DPMs are very hard to beat. The original 69 DPM is a bigger pattern and lighter in colour than the later versions not unlike the RB. Unfortunately, both are not easy to get and can be expensive, a distinct disadvantage for preparedness applications.

Before you all go out and spend big money on camo patterns, remember the lesson learned in Afghanistan. The fighters had NO Crye, no Mk81, no digital camo, etc. They used solid colors that bended with their surroundings, very basic and it worked very well! People often forget the whole point of camo is to break up the outline of the human body, not to make you invisible. Between night vision and thermal, which is readily available now your chances of being hidden or not as good as you may think. A smart land owner, uses night vision to conduct patrols to a high point, then uses a thermal monocular to identify everything breathing. Keep things simple and put your money where you get the best bang for your buck.

I agree even though I have a lot of multicam. A lot of my gear is coyote brown and if the active duty or feds became an issue I’d switch to earth tones for several reasons. We know who and what our local law enforcement wear already. Observation/reconnaissance will be key to not plinking one of your own (friendly fire). I encourage people to look for unit patches and tags that will identify unit/branch/agency. This is just good intel gathering anyway to learn what is in your area. Most civilians don’t run anything but morale patches or flags.

Eastern Washington has both desert and forest, sage transition environments. I generally accept that the colors of animals like 🦌, raccoons, upland game birds etcetera are probably best. Grey's and browns mostly with some black and white striping. Carry a plain white bedsheet in the winter. Use these for geese hunting.

Bigger patterns are better at range, smaller patterns are better up close. The best is to use a micro pattern to create a larger macro pattern. I find just using basic earth tones with mis matched earth tone gear works quite well. Civilian clothing or trash bags for urban camo. Also many foreign countries do not have ITAR restrictions and will sell you military grade camo/paint. GORE who makes goretex also sells multispectral camo netting, i.e. radar, nir, ir, ultraviolet etc. Most commercial military uniforms will not have the IR dye's etc. so be aware before you purchase and avoid surplus if you can unless you have nods to verify before purchase. I recommend Finnish camo from varusteleka, Hyperstealth out of canada if you want stuff that is treated properly. Love kryptek but I do not think anyone treats it with ir dye. Right now I run a combat anaorak from 0241 tactical in the "disruptive" style he does combing two camo patterns in different panels of the clothing, so it is a combo of hyde definition badlands and sandstorm works perfect for my area.
