Went to see him at the Village Gate in New York in the very early 70's. Loved his set but Miles basically had contempt for the audience, scowling at us, clearing his spit valve practically in our faces as we were seating below the elevated stage, and walking behind the stage curtain when he finished his solo. In Contrast Eddie Harris' set was fun, upbeat and he appeared happy to be performing for us. Miles was one of the most innovative musicians in my time and many of his sidemen became band leaders afterwards. He deserves a lot of credit.

Yeah. Miles was Miles. When he came back in the early 80's he seemed a little more mellow. I saw him in the Kool Jazz Festival in 83, 84 and 85. I wasn't close enough to interact with him, but he did seem to be playing to the audience. 83 was my favorite set, with Mike Stern and John Scofield on guitars. Fond memories.

Miles was the greatest. I saw him in Cleveland when I was 16. I got to go backstage during an intermission to ask him for his autograph. He was sitting on some stairs fiddling with his horn. When the adult that accompanied me backstage asked him if I could get his autograph he just looked at us for a second and went back to fiddling with his horn so we returned to our seats. It didn’t bother us because we were warned. We considered it Miles being Miles. 😎
