It’s been five long years since the VW ID. Buzz first appeared as a concept. And we’ve been eagerly anticipating its arrival ever since. But now, finally, the wait is over. The ID. Buzz is here and set to become one of the most talked-about electric vehicles on the market.
The ID. Buzz is based on the same foundations as all the Volkswagen Group ID models. Known as the MEB platform, this is effectively a giant skateboard with the wheels, suspension and motors at one end and the battery pack in the middle. To help ensure that the platform doesn’t compromise the design of the cars on which they are based, Volkswagen engineers can tweak the wheelbase (the distance between the wheels from front to rear).
It’s available as a five-seater passenger version and a three-seater panel van which starts from £41,621. Join Ginny as she puts the new ID. Buzz Cargo through its paces in the UK for the first time. Has Volkswagen aced it with the new ID. Buzz? As always, we love to read your comments, so let us know what YOU think below.

Thanks. This a lovely review of a vehicle that I'd never buy but love to see available for others. I also like how the charging data was presented: the only info that matters is the DC to 80% time and the 10-minute splash-and-dash range. Seriously, as every EV available today supports more than 7kWh AC charging, the home charging time is irrelevant 9the limiting factor is the home EVSE); no one in their right mind does a 0-100% charge at home, in one night - we all want to use an off-peak window to top-up...

Loving my e-expert too. I feel like the buzz cargo is a replacement for the caddy (larger external dimensions but similar inside). Another e-expert owner who’s done 38000 miles this year and loving everyone of them. I’ve been looking at the ID Buzz cargo as a possible replacement but what I see from this video is no drivers armrest (makes a big difference on long journeys), no enclosed storage and a similar range to what I currently get with the w-expert. The price is more so I’d expect more which, other than the faster rapid charging speed (probably 15minutes less for a 10-80% charge) is not going to dissuade me from buying another e-expert. Shame as it looks great. Need to test drive one to see what the efficiency is really like and how poor the infotainment system is.

400km range for city use (probably 350 irl) is fine. Price is OK (slightly more than the Transporter diesel), running costs will be a bit lower. The Transporter and Ford Transit are the most used/sold cargo vans, so this will also sell pretty well, I reckon. If you can get your hands on one.
@matthiashejlskov5008
@matthiashejlskov5008 Жыл бұрын
It's cargo space is the same as the caddy though. So i'm not sure it is in direct competition with the transporter. Some might be fine switching to a much smaller van, but many will probably find it lacking in space.
@hansc8433

Hmm.. yes, you have a valid point there. We’ll see. Most companies that use these extensively (like inner-city transport companies, or postal services) will not start replacing their vans just because VW comes out with a new van. It has to make economic sense first. But indeed, the capacity could be a major factor as well.

I've got an e-expert, same size as a transporter and transit custom. I'm actually paying about the same per month as I did for my old paid off diesel van. If I was looking to buy new it would be a clean nobrainer with the lease being about the same as my diesel cost was before.

it's more equivalent in size to a VW Caddy, not a Transporter. Actually fits in between the Caddy short and long variants, but with significantly less payload. Comparing it to a Dispatch is incorrect as that is a proper medium van like a Transporter or Transit custom. I wonder when VW will come out with a proper medium van EV as they are the most common van size, in the UK at least. The Buzz with it's tiny payload is really very limited. Looks great though.

At 3.3 miles per kWh with todays prices of electricity is not saving compared to a diesel van of the same size. And if you charge on the street you'll pay very high prices. Weight doesn't affect range that much. Adding a roof rack or trailer will lower range due to drag, but the 600kg cargo capacity is barely going to make a noticeable difference unless you're driving up a mountain.
@RB-lt8kt
@RB-lt8kt Жыл бұрын
200 mile range is more realistic than other vans. Don't know the efficiency on the motorway though ? I bet some are already being ordered for camper conversion and day van conversions. Pop up roof might be an issue due to vehicle weight (roof adds strength). If you did convert to a camper then charging could be done onsite using 2.4 kw slow charger. Double bed with kitchen, solar for the roof (possibly two 400 watt panels or at least 300 w using 100 w panels), rear or side awning, solar battery (Bluetti) and side window (s). So conversion £6000 if you do it yourself (warranty might be void ?)

EVs are the future however for vans there are few that will allow weights of over 1 ton. The citroen/peugeot medium van that she compared this too takes over 900 kg with the small battery, 870 with the big battery though. Plug & Charge is coming for the ID.3/4/5 as well once the software is updated to the version that has it which I think is v3.1, the Buzz has 3.2. they need to get the carry weight limit up , if the payload is 600kg , then you lose 100kg for the driver , then you have 500 kg for the load , the avg tradie would easily have that in tools and parts , a delivery van would need at least 800kg +100kg for driver

From £41k?, not a bargain is it?!. I'd be more interested in the Xbus myself. Payload is quoted as being 800-1100kg depending on body module/battery used (much better for me as a window cleaner then the circa 600kg of the VW) and with the maximum amount of battery packs fitted (108-150 miles, obviously not enough for some, but fine for my usage) should cost around £22k. Yes, the VW is a much more polished product (though that doesn't necessarily translate into reliability), and would be much better for those who spend a lot of time on the motorway network (the Xbus's top speed is quoted as being >100km/h). Personally, I think the Xbus looks cooler too (with a very clear nod to the styling of the VW Type 2 bay window) , especially the Offroad version, which looks like a Tonka toy made real!. Another reason I am not overly impressed with the VW is the fact that there is no solar panels available, either as standard (like the Xbus) or even as an option (though you can have stainless steel pedals with play and pause symbols on them!). Why is it that the big manufacturers seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that a large flat roof gives an obvious opportunity to mount solar panels?. Even in the UK, this would be very useful to power ancillary systems and stretch the range (every little helps).

Totally amazing van ,but realistically how many can afford and if a builder would you really spend this much ,and it gets me how they go on about electric vehicles and saving the planet, but yet so many are well out of the reach of most .A van for me is to carry my tools ,locally ,bascis would be great ,with sensible extras like abs ,but really a van with good range but 15 thousand ,even this is to much for many I know ,some spend a couple of thousand as that is all they can ,how will everyone all on electric happen ,it won't, not with the tech and costs at the moment .

Seriously, get a builder in it with a full load to try. It's pointless doing a test without a pallet or load simply because we already know the rang is rubbish, but how much more rubbish is it with a load on board. Wich businessmen is going to have one that won't be in white.

$56K US dollars (41,000 BP) is an absurd price to pay for such a pedestrian range (210 miles) and a horrific reputation for User Interface VW has managed to earn with ID4 ! BYD and many others will have much better EVs at lower prices by the time ID Buzz arrives in US. This car is a tough tell today let alone in 18 months when VW will face a ton of competition in US market.

You didn't mention the low cost of running it, compared to a gas guzzler van.. AND the steep depreciation of petrol vans, the servicing of them too.. SO much better with electrics...

agreed , I live in Central Canada and would simply get a base model that already has all that would use, currently it costs me average $80/week for petrol in my Volvo and roughly 300 miles weekly, and i do all my own maintenance in my home garage, we have the cheapest hydro rates in North America at 9.1 cents/kilowatt hour which means i would save a ton of $$ on fuel/maintenance and would opt for the bigger charger, simply for the reason that i have 200 amp electrical service in my garage already and it would save me time and I'd only have to charge once a week , maybe 1 1/2 for a quick top up in the winter months even if i had to charge 3 times a week i am still way ahead of what it cost to buy petrol at $1.699 per litre , generally Tesla model 3's in my city in the winter time owners have told me the battery then is 55% at best from 90% charge , our winter mean temp is a daily of - 23 celsius plus wind chill , pricing here in 2024 when they come to dealerships here will start at $66k CDN which i hope is about 10k less than forecasted , we get a $5000 gov't rebate on all models that are full EV's so that would put it about $50k plus taxes/insurance, and with $15/weekly for charging at home $800/yr vs $4200/yr on petrol and no real maintenance , its a new vehicle and these things don't go through tires or brakes like an ice does, the only real consumable items are the tires and that cost doesn't come until 3-4 yrs of ownership, i would love to save that $3400/yearly on fuel and camping and fishing i could just sleep in the back , so Bobs your uncle 👍

@@99unclebob dude this is priced at like 75 grand for canada. Add in a loaded vehicle of either cargo/people the cold weather hit on range and this thing won't save you anything at all. Also a base model would forego a heat pump which would hurt range even more. Please explain how you would save money with this vehicle?
@amanasd26
@amanasd26 Жыл бұрын
too bad it was like 4X more up front cost than those vans you are talking about. Yuu will never recoup the difference. I'm all for electric but this vehicle is a huge miss from a economics perspective.

Funny they think anyone would buy it at that price. And I feel sorry for the ones that buy these overprized early EVs that will lose so much of their resale value in few years. Of course journalist who don't need to pay for this are very impressed.

Its a story about love, anger, war and ultimate betrayal. Many, many years ago in a dark desolate corner of Romania there did exist a young prince of unremarkable wealth and glory. The prince was forlorn at the poverty and distress to which his servants had to endure. Then one day, the prince fell of a wall and tragically died.
