I’m from Thailand. Now, people are discussing that maybe we should cancel school field trips. Personally, I don’t think that’s how this could be solved though. People still take busses to travel or visit other provinces. We need to improve road safety in this country.
@Farang_Lifestyles
@Farang_Lifestyles Ай бұрын
sounds like a typical Thai reaction,,, rather than determine that the vehicles used need to have frequent maintenance checks from a 3rd party and not the actual bus company that ignores the defects... maybe a better solution would be that the children should stay home as that would be much safer... at least until proper vehicles can be used for children
@MM-sf3rl

One aspect is more simple. Thai’s don’t wear seatbelts. Thirty years ago in Alaska, on the Seward Hwy, one year 27 people died on a single stretch of highway. The following year it was law to drive with your headlights on - the next year only two deaths. Maybe it’s only half the answer but it could start tomorrow. America made a simple public notice, “click it or ticket”. The great Ralph Nader saved millions of lives with common sense solutions.

@@Farang_Lifestyles lol, as a Thai, yes, it is a typical low mind Thai reaction. I don't even know how it even become a topic to discuss. And the regulations here aren't really written with blood too. They just left all the sacrifices there wastefully. All of this will be forgotten in less than a month and no one will talk about it anymore.

@@MM-sf3rl I rode in a bus like this before, no one wearing a seatbelt at all. Usually, on the passenger's seat, it got tucked away down the seat rail or smth. I always wear the seatbelt everywhere and every time else btw.

I live in Thailand, love Thai people and I have taught English to Thai school children so this is especially heartbreaking, but sadly, Jonathan is right. What has speeding and road safety go to do with this case? They put massive natural gas tanks inside a school bus in order to save costs on petrol. They literally designed a time bomb. Tires car burst even if you are driving 5mph. This was caused by greed and greed alone.

This is utterly tragic to watch and listen to. Those who have lost their lives in such a horrendous accident is dreadful enough, those who have survived will be dealing with trauma for years. Condolences to the families and friends of all those involved. As an aside, I watched a report on Compressed Natural Gas being used in India a couple of days ago, to power motorcycles due to the volume of them in the Country and the polution they are causing. The tank is underneath the seat !!

I too live in Thailand for just over one year. I’ve not even seen a hand full of accident, and none serious. However, I know the numbers, especially during “the seven deadly days” over new years. What I do see is that almost no one here wears a seatbelt. My girlfriend thinks seatbelts are dangerous. 😢 Also, comparing North America or Europe to Thailand does not work because of some many motorcycles here (mopeds). When you compare Thailand to Africa, it’s a more reasonable comparison, and, sadly, similar outcomes. It will be a sad day tomorrow in Thailand, and the rest of the week. Thai’s have good hearts.💕

There is absolutely no traffic police in Thailand. You can drive however you want and the police don’t do anything. They are more concerned about collecting fines by setting up roadblocks. They have become experts at collecting cash fines on the spot.

Yes but this wasn’t actually a traffic accident, the title is inaccurate, it was a fire, from the gas.
@jonw8uk1
@jonw8uk1 Ай бұрын
@@MojoBrookhavenand what caused the gas to ignite? I read that the bus tyre blew, causing bus to crash into a concrete pillar - this is still a traffic accident. The sparks from this collision likely ignited the gas. The question is why did this cause a fire - there should be no gas leak - has the CNG system been checked recently? Is it a legal requirement for inspections on buses?Why couldn’t the emergency doors be opened? Was the ‘glass shatter’ hammers available inside the bus?
@MojoBrookhaven

There is also a manually operated third exit at the rear as well. In last resort there are a dozen emergency hammers positioned throughout the bus over both floors that make quick work of the laminated windows. I read the driver ran off without assisting the passengers to exit 😡 That part brings tears to my eyes as a professional driver 😭 and even more so as i have a six year old daughter. As is the case so often here in Thailand (I've lived here 20+ years) the knee-jerk face-saving response is to ban all school field trips, instead of cracking down on road safety including more strict regulation on vehicle maintenance and quality standards as well as scrutiny of bus driver qualifications and certification. A crusty old bus like this simply does not belong on public roads and additionally carrying a cramped load of school kids. RIP.

It's disturbing to see clips where the bus driver was moonwalking with a fire extinguisher while children were trapped inside. He should be punished for his negligence. Equally frustrating were the bystanders focused on filming instead of helping, capturing the chaos on video instead of breaking the windows to save lives.
