AT&T says it will give affected customers $5 each to compensate for last week’s cellphone network outage that left many without service for hours.
The Dallas-based company said on its website that customers will get the $5 credit on their account within two billing cycles. The credit does not apply to AT&T Business, prepaid service or Cricket, its low-cost wireless service. AT&T said prepaid customers will have options available to them if they were impacted, although it did not elaborate on what those options might be.

I work for the sheriff at their Dispatch center and that day I didn’t work but I heard a BUNCH of people called 911 to see if 911 still worked or to ask when their phones will work again…. 🤦
@spottedtime
@spottedtime 5 ай бұрын
The worst part, is when people actually needed the sheriff for any reason and they probably couldn’t get through, within a reasonable amount of time. This is one reason why 911 call centers hate butt dialers because real emergencies can’t get through on time, due to that those call centers don’t know if someone accidentally called them or if it was a real emergency. Actually, I heard that some states actually punish those that accidentally call 911, which I’m assuming is a fine or a short jail time.

Similar thing happened here in Australia. Optus, our 2nd biggest carrier, had an outage that lasted in some places, up to 12 hours, which also affected our emergency services calls. That too was a "software problem" where one of their processing units went into overload, and broke the whole network. They only offered compensation to affected businesses, not the "common people"......

Same thing happened in canada a while back where one of the two/three major comm companies were shut down for a day. Except you couldn't even use home wifi - everything was down basically. Nationalizing those sectors would go a long way towards reliability, affordability, and accountability

I brainstormed with some other network engineers. The official statement didn't say the word "coding" but it did allude to the idea that they were adding and configuring hardware. So, it's highly likely that a DNS configuration error was the cause. In general terms, someone made a mistake during a setting change.

This is insane. When we have outages here, companies usually apologize and reach who they can ASAP as well as keep updated AND we can still call 000 (our 911) without service. We also have payphones that double as wifi hubs. Once for after a really bad outage, my service provider gave us unlimited credit/data for a whole 24 hours. For everyone, even the ones not affected. (It was human error for the outage is why.) The providers here aren't perfect but this feels like should be the bare minimum; actual communication and access to emergency services.

California is straight up suing AT&T now over not maintaining the infrastructure for landlines due to safety reasons. They sneakily switched my family's landline with an internet phone a few years back when we had an issue. They had merged my mom's and her ex-boyfriend's AT&T accounts even though they had been separate and he never paid for our landline because AT&T assumed because they had the same address it should all be under the man when my mom owns the house and refused to fix their mistake and refused to let us keep our phone number. so we switched to Comcast for like 3 months because they said we could keep our phone number, and then my mom switch back to AT&T and we could magically keep our phone number when moving from Comcast but not to a new AT&T account because the dumb shits merged the accounts behind our backs. Anyway when we requested a landline they gave us a internet phone and when I told my mom "this isn't a landline, it is plugged into our router, it won't work if the power is out" she called them and they said "We, don't allow new landline connections anymore because we let the copper wire degrade, we only keep currently connected landline phones all the rest are internet phones now." I'm still pissed, hope California kicks their asses

That makes no sense. ANY carrier's antennas will relay a 911 call. If AT&T's antennas are down on a tower, it will bounce it to the nearest working antenna array, no matter who the carrier is. That is federal law.

few years back a fiber optic cable was cut when installing pipe it wiped out internet providers Every cell carrier in my area and all landlines for 36 hours Insane to think 1 cut/damaged wire can disable all communications!

Yeah, they clean five dollars is the estimated cost of service for one day. SMH. That really sucked. Unfortunately I’m kind of stuck with AT&T for the next 30 months.

Was I the only one who immediately checked to make sure the bill was paid that morning when we woke up to no service? 😅

Only the 1.7 million? Seems like it was higher based on how wide spread the issue was.
