Personally, if am upgrading myself am not doing it for people. Am doing it because I want to feel a certain way. Example, when I used to live in a single room, then my salo ikaongezeka kiasi and I decided that I want to have my own washroom, so I moved to a bedsitter. And I upgraded my house, not for anyone really because I don't even like visitors. So, not everyone does it to be seen.

If you are setting wealth and assets aside and paying zakat, then that is permissible, if you are saving your money and also not paying zakat, that is what is known as hoarding and is forbidden.
