Its the classic D Minor scale riff aka 5-7-8, lots of people refer to it as "The Riff" in metalcore. There is many examples. Avenger - Revenge Attack (1985), Warlord - Child Of The Damned (1981 Demo) Dreamsong - Ceremonial Oath (1995), At The Gates were not the first nor the last lol

@@triplej8666 well, the guitar tone and how it was mixed is important. Of course someone did a 578 drop d pedal riff before them. But did it have that iconic vibe and feel? I was playing in bands through the 2000s. I kind started right when metalcore was taking off. Of course it was brewing in the 90s. But living in a major city, in and out of different bands. Every guitarist I knew was influenced by at the gates. We all kind of recognized that album specifically. Bands were always trading members and the community kind of all had the same records in mind. At the gates, children of bodom, death, disincarnate, that first necrophagist demo, alot of hardcore and deathmetal. Then the big 4 of mainstream metalcore popped up. Killswitch, shadows fall, etc. Thats my experience at least. Ohio is has a prominate brutal death metal and hardcore scene. But columbus had some nice metalcore bands in the 2000s. None of them broke out tho. Many were too heavy or too tech id say. 21 pilots made it lol. Then athens had skeleton witch. They were sick.

@@adamsunderland0823 i agree metalcore owes mostly to at the gates more than any other band, but i think the influence of this riff in particular and people saying songs like "unholy confessions" and "spirit crusher" are rip-offs is an overstatement

@@triplej8666 that riff and that guitar tone was heavily ripped tho. I dont rememeber what the amp head was... theres a specific head thats quite literally metal core in a nutshell lol. The one used on slaughter. Owe royalities is def an over statement tho. I agree with you. My real opinon... kse's first album was 2002. The production and riffing i think was the biggest shift that led to metalcore.

Death metal or melodic death metal? If death metal then there’s a little band called Death. And if it’s melodic death then there’s also In Flames and the legendary Amon Amarth.
