I owned a 1985 Trooper when I was living in the 80's in Venezuela. It had 2.0 liters and 88HP, but that thing could crawl anywhere. I went through beach sands, dunes, rivers, and mountains without any problems. The only negative : it was a 4-speed manual. It needed an extra gear for highways.

What a fun video! I have the 1993 Trooper LS that my mother researched and bought my father for Valentine's Day, sitting in my driveway at this moment. A parsimonious fellow, he was shocked, and blown away by the replacement she selected for his beloved Subaru wagon. He drove it, we used it for a hunting vehicle, a transport back and forth to Big Bear, a Boy Scout bus and much more. The features and review points in the flick all right: spacious, remarkably capable off-road, well thought out details. Sure, they didn't know what was going to happen with that 4L30 transmission at the time, but time itself has certainly shown these Troopers to have been excellent SUVs!

A very solid and rugged SUV and cheaper too. I used older 89 trooper for ten years, accident took it from me, the short frame 1993 model I used was superb at 400000+ km. Sold recently. 👍

Thanks very much for uploading this! My family bought a four door Trooper S new in '94 and kept it for 10 years / 170k miles. By that point it's bumpers were starting to fall off, it drank a quart of oil per week, and the suspension was shot, but it also didn't have a lot of easy days. In addition to being the rig I learned how to drive on, It had become an integral part of the family, and it'll have a place in my heart as a result.

...good video. I just bought a 93 Holden flat bed twin cab rodeo , it's the Australian GM , the troopers are called jackeroos I believe . Four WD , hydraulic tipping tray, dual fuel that's LPG or petrol . Nice simple four cylinder engine in top condition cos the engines don't wear out on LPG fuel . Had to do basic housekeeping work in it such as new set of rear and front lights and cabin light , remove radio/stereo to get the security code usually written on case thankfully and put back and bring to life , lots of cleaning and detailing , new windshield washer , gotta put new fuel pump on it for it to run on petrol . It needs normal looking tyres, the current tyres are too wide but good . It idles at high RPM for a bit long and settles to decent rpm when heated up only , horn not working or maybe it ain't got one. Vibrations in chassy make me wonder if engine mounts have sagged and engine is resting lightly on cross member perhaps but not easy to check cos I have to remove the underbody shield and same for fuel pump too. I reckon master brake cylinder could need looking into in next few months.

I love all those not so subtle flexes and slaps the instructor was giving in the off road section. "I need you to fold in your mirrors *close up mirrors*.. " You had to turn this way because of the brush guard sticking out" hahah. I own a Trooper and many Land Rovers and I think it's obvious why they didn't do this a year later. The RR got an interior redesign in 94 and optional LWB. In 95 Land Rover released the next Gen P38 Range Rover with an enormous level up in luxury/features. Something the Trooper would never be able to be compared to. Don't get me wrong I love my Trooper for what it is...simple and reliable and decent off road w lots of cargo room.

I still have my 1993 Trooper S and have 120,000 miles. With only routine maintenance, I have had almost no mechanical problems and as would be expected, things start to dry rot from the sun and falling off, but again, nothing significant. It has passed smog inspection in CA and NV each year without fail. It really is a well built SUV. Too bad that Isuzu allowed Consumer Reports to drive it off the U.S. market. If I could find a dedicated mechanic, I would have them redo the Trooper and bring it up to top-notch off-road status. Presently it is my every day driver around town, hauling all sorts of supplies from Home Depot.

I own a 95 Honda Passport (Isuzu Rodeo), while it is old and the rear doors are difficult to open, for the price I paid I certainly won. Rig does very well in Alaska in all seasons and is a vehicle that I have come to love and depend on despite it's old age. Only cons that I can think of is that the seat is uncomfortable over long distances, rear passenger doors seem to fail in old age, and if you're a mechanic the 3.2 liter engine is a bit of a pain in the butt to work on. Other than that it is a wonderful vehicle.
@H.pylori6 жыл бұрын
Wow, this video is great. I did not know all of these things about the Trooper when I purchased it in 1993. I still have it and have done very little to it other than routine maintenance. Same transmission, engine, suspension. I have the S model and paid $25,000 new. Has large carrying capacity and I have moved furniture three times when moving to new house. It sits nice and high off the road and seats are comfortable. Paint is fading on the top and hood, plastic parts are loose, and other wear and tear things are falling off. Still has great gas mileage and still passes SMOG check each year. I only wish I could find a reliable place to replace all of the engine parts and add a few new off road upgrades. Then I would keep it for another 25 years. Has 130,000 miles. Parts are hard to find now. Have to depend on the mom and pop repair place to modify replacement parts. Too bad Consumer Reports and 60 Minutes killed it in 1996. (Did not include the 1993 Trooper).

Love the Trooper, but I prefer my Pajero/Montero at least it's got an AW trans in it not the 4l30e that can't handle what the Troopers are designed for. I had a chuckle about the solid front axle being a liability, on road mabe, but off road it can't be beat by ifs.

This is a very unfair review of Mitsubishi Montero vs Trooper. Montero is superior to Trooper. Compare transmission on Montero to Trooper, there are a lot of Troopers with broken transmissions (automatic). Montero SR does not need LSD it has lockable differentials: center and rear which Trooper does not have. And no Montero transfer box does not get stuck in 4WD High. I still drive my 1995 Montero SR in 2023 and it runs great.
