Great port of Space Invaders to the Atari 2600 and one of its better known and remembered games. Ive shown the basic starting mode and managed to clock the score and then onto game 16 which is a lot more difficult. -

On the original Atari 2600 council there was a trick(these days we'd call it a glitch) that would allow you to fire two missles at a time instead of only one. Using this 'trick' made you practically undefeatable. It really came in handy when it was down to the last few space invaders. I would play and play until I was tired.

@@DoomSlayer3493 my guess is the game would switch between the player's missile and the enemies missile every frame, but with however they're recording this, it's skipping over the player frames. (I'm PRETTY sure the Atari could only have a single missile on screen at once)

Hi I’ve played this game on Atari and the bullet you shoot is only one pixel wide and hard to see even on a CRT TV, so I think emulators just don’t pick it up well

@@dementedpurplechicken It can have two missiles on the screen at once, but oddly Space Invaders doesn't use either one for the player or invader missile, they're used for the little edge markers in the lower left and right. The ball sprite is used for the missiles, and that's why it's flickering between the three positions.

I had the 2600 and the 5200. Most of the 5200 games were better, but the 2600 Space Invaders is still one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played.

It was 2001. This was only a handful of games I played on a real Heavy Sixer my father once had and unfortunately never came back to this day. But, Space Invaders is one of my favorites for the system along with Missile Command, Asteroids, and Berzerk. The NES overshadows the Atari horribly. This is the console that started it all!

I actually preferred space invaders on atari 2600 than the arcade because of all the variations you had (making the shields move side to side, making the bombs move side to side, etc.). Made it less monotonous and more interesting.

When the shields started swaying, the incoming shots started to zig zag, and the space ships turned invisible, even a sweet little ten-year old me had to say, “what the fuck?”

One of my all time favorite games on the Atari Video Computer System. I wish the people who made the Atari Flashback Classics would have put this game in either Volume 1 or 2, but they didn't.

Some of the physical Flashback consoles have it. But I noticed that the Flashback Classics packs seem to consist entirely of games that don't have any non-Atari licenses associated with them. Space Invaders was a port of a Taito arcade game, so that might be why it's not included.

Atari did a great job with Space Invaders, especially with all the options and even adding a dance to them when 4 were left. Why they didn't spend the time to get Pac Man right, ugh....

My dad loves this game, ever since he was a kid! When my dad and I bought an Atari 2600 vcs from ebay so we can play space invaders, not on an emulator anymore, I surprisingly have gotten very good at Atari 2600 space invaders. My highest score is even higher than the score in this video. I'm surprised I have already gotten this good at a2600 space invaders already, I haven't even played it half of a year yet!

What a dick move at 6:43, respawning you right under an alien that's shooting. At least Asteroids has the courtesy to respawn you in an area where you're not about to be smashed by an asteroid a fraction of a second after spawning.

Nah, that's normal. Many Atari 2600 games do that. It's to line up the sprites.

My friend Larry got this game when it came out, and I remember us playing it for hours. So unbelievable being able to play Space Invaders...AT HOME!! Then I recall the hype about Pac-Man coming to the Atari VCS and being so absolutely disappointed when we saw that crap-fest. Thanks for the game play my friend, good stuff! 👍 👍

I have always loved the Atari 2600 Space Invaders. I like it better than the arcade version. Probably because it's easier. I only dislike two things about the 2600 SI. You can't earn extra lives and the score only goes up to 9999. I learned a secret about this game. If you hold down the reset button as you turn on the Atari 2600, you can fire two shots at once instead of one.

The 2600 version will always be the best for one reason alone: 2-player simultaneous co-op mode! The GameBoy version was perhaps the next best version with the ability to play a Vs. Mode, appearing as the UFO across the link cable. It also played as an arcade when plugged into the Super GameBoy. Nowadays, I enjoy watching my cats watching this.

Could not help hut notice that the space invaders never fired a shot How did you manage to stop them from ever shooting? Or is it just 'luck' or a lucky /faulty cartridge? As I know that the arcade machine that is used for donkey king world records is considered faulty by some as it spawns things in ways that no other machine does, and my space invaders always shoot back :(

Most likely. The player and invaders use the same shot sprite (I think it's technically a playfield sprite, even) , so the game rapidly flickers between the two. Since the player's shot appears solid in this video, that means it's only showing every other frame, and skipping the frame when the Invaders' shots would normally be visible.

Actually they are firing back. The problem is the capture doesn't show it due to the slight flicker the alien shots have. Someone else noted why that is.

The Atari 2600 was my first system and along with it's version of Ms. Pac-Man was my first entry into video games. Megamania was my 2nd game. When I saw my dad playing Space Invaders and kicking the game's ass, that became my 3rd game. I tell the story of this on one of my videos.

James Borlan, the Flashbacks that have Space Invaders have an updated version. They also updated Frogger on the Flashbacks that have that game. Not sure why, as the other games are all the same as the originals.

Actually they are firing back. If you notice the shield's tops are being destroyed. The problem is the way the footage was captured. The aliens shots have a slight flicker and for some reason the video capture card they used doesn't pickup these flickering. I have also noticed when people post videos of other games on other consoles.

No, it's the video itself. The player's shot and the invaders' shots use the same sprite, so it rapidly flickers between the two (a common trick in Atari 2600 games), but since the player's shot is solid in the video, that means it's only showing the frames with the player's shot and skipping the frames with the invaders' shots. There are game variations with invisible invaders, but no variations where their shots are invisible.

@@LITTLE1994 If you do a comparison, you'll see the bombs drop a lot faster on the arcade version. Your own missiles shoot faster too but that can work against you because you have to be more directly under your target when you shoot. Also there are significantly more ships going against you in the arcade version. 55 on a full screen for the arcade version vs 36 on the Atari 2600 version. Not only do you have to shoot more targets to pass a screen in the arcade version but the ships are packed more tightly together so there's a far smaller gap between ships you can use to dodge bombs.
