Gotta love the old RF shielding, diecast aluminium for that cold war EM pulse resistance.

When the apocalypse comes there will only be 2 survivors - the cockroaches and 1970s Atari stuff 😁

The original VCS was a joy to work on. Very sturdy. Got a lot of them working very easily back when.

Nice to see you getting a chance to take advantage of the new space for making videos. I now nolonger have to wonder what is in the 2600+ now which is nice.

I wonder if you could put the new 2600+ guts into the old 2600 case? Just for giggles.

Interesting to see the redesigns of the controller internals. The original dome switches are notorious for wearing out, so "modernizing" to carbonized rubber membranes is probably for the best; I've worn out the latter as well in my OG Game Boy, but unlike with on-board dome switches I was able to purchase and install an aftermarket membrane replacement with very little fuss. Also interesting to see comparison of original CX-40 versus CX-10. My childhood 2600 is a 4-switch NTSC, and we not only wore out the original CX-40's but also at least two pairs of aftermarket controllers. When I got it out for the kids several years ago, I purchased both a Flashback and an original game + controller lot to get some new controllers, and by luck the latter were CX-10's! The cartridges also had numbers on end labels, which I had never seen before.

Funny enough, i bought a 4 switch VCS/2600 and 34 games at a yard sale for $20, and the joystick that was provided with it just so happened to be a CX10 (it has a few issues, but a rebuild should resolve the issues). I did buy one of those cheap knock off 2600 joysticks for around $10 and internally its built pretty much exactly like an original CX40 (except that the wires are soldered on instead of crimped). It's usually those cheap knockoff joysticks use the Silicone Membranes instead of the metal domes.

Someone needs to run the 1500m in Activisions Decathalon with the new joystick. The ultimate test to any joystick from that era.

Ok, so I haven't seen anyone try it, but I love the size of the OG 2600, and from the pics I see of the Plus and the OG together, it seems like the switches are the same spacing. Not the sixers obviously but the 4 switch. Now this brings my idea, could you swap the the hardware from the 2600+ into an OG 4 switch shell??

We were a bit late to the Atari VCS/2600 as a kid so I only had experience with the CX40 joystick. I was pretty good with my toys and game systems so I managed to only break the white plastic inner stick on one of them!

Very nice, love the new joysticks. Read somewhere that they may even follow up with the 7800 joypads and if they do, I'll be all over these (as long as they will also come with that great thumb stick).

Would be interesting if you had one of the re-designed joysticks with the twisting stick for the “new” (ie their previous cash grab) VCS to tear down as well. Mine feels very, very flimsy.

I didn't expect the original 2600 to have such a small motherboard. Being 70s tech I would have expected to fill the case and not be very tightly packed
