The Atari 5200 SuperSystem, commonly known as the Atari 5200, is a home video game console that was introduced in 1982 by Atari Inc. as a higher-end complementary console for the popular Atari 2600. The 5200 was created to compete with the Intellivision, but wound up more directly competing with the ColecoVision shortly after its release.

Nothing against James Rolfe, I've been watching him and Mike for years, but why is he mentioned in title? You don't need to put James name in the title, people will still watch this because it's good! It's also awesome you've got mark from CGR on the show.
@firstborn9419
@firstborn9419 8 жыл бұрын
+Oliver Cass the Hardcore audience will still watch sure but it can't be denied that James' name brings in views, people who have never watched a episode of video game years and are just casually browsing youtube will recognize the name James Rolfe and click the vid. Hell I watch this channel pretty regularly and Video game years but i don't know any of the people offerering commentary on a name basis except Ian and Pat,sure the name flashes up there but I could care less, but I recognize James...its just good advertising for the program.

+Oliver Cass The problem I see is that there's not a whole lot of James Rolfe and the points where he is in is, from my opinion, tacked on. It's likely even if he wasn't in it the video will still work out just fine.

+Oliver Cass The name "James Rolfe" doesn't bring in viewers, nobody knows who that is... However, the name "AVGN" does.
@firstborn9419

***** I think they just did it for advertising for the vid, James got no more air time than anyone one else he honestly probably got less but he is a Big name and it will help push the vid as far as exposure, sort of how they advertise little shop of horrors with Jack nicholson even tho Jack is in the film for like 3 min, ultimately I don't think its that big a deal tho nothing to lose sleep over.

Ever since I first heard James Rolfe criticize the controller of the system, I always wondered how the controller itself was a disaster and it wouldn't be until Adam Koralik revealed what was inside and even the fix made on it is only a temporary one.

I really loved the 5200. Going from the 2600 to the 5200 graphics wise was amazing. I have really fond memories of playing Dig Dug, Joust, and Qix. The controllers were ass, but I was 10. The whole thing rocked back then.

I used to play my friend's Atari 5200 back in 1983-84 and was always blown away by it, esp. Pole Position. Of course, I was 7. I was totally unaware of all the issues brought to light by AVGN and others later on so I was always a bit surprised that the system was considered a flop.

First time I remember playing a 5200 was probably back in 1983, when one of my elder brothers bought one. I went to his house and tried it out and to be honest, I enjoyed the time I spent with it (his house was where I first laid hands on an Odyssey 2 and a Commodore 64). I now have all three of those in my collection because of him :). But since I now have one of my own and have spent some time with it....while I still enjoy the system (Mountain King is great for it), those controllers aren't exactly well made. The unit I bought had a working controller and the dealer had another functioning controller which I also bought, but I have two other controllers I found at a local thrift I just hang onto for parts. Many of the games need precise controls that the non-self-centering joysticks just can't do. And having Super Breakout as the pack-in? Sheer lunacy. Have a game that begs for a spinner control, paired with a system that comes with the controls it had, and it's a lesson in sheer frustration you'll be gettin', my friends. The controllers for the Intellivision and the Colecovision weren't much better, but as I struggle with Demon Attack for the Intellivision, I'm at least not concerned with losing control at an odd moment.

The controllers are surprisingly easy and cheap to fix. I used tinfoil, a hole punch, rubbing alcohol, and Elmer's Glue. I haven't had any issues with my controller since.

If you consider how revolutionary the 5200 controller is then it will start to make sense. It was the first Analog Joystick, and you probably haven't ever used one of those before? I'm not sure who was behind the joystick at Atari, but I do know that Jay Miner developed the computer chips that are inside the 5200. The pokey chip alone is enough for me to want to own and play games on the 5200. It had 16k of ram, the same amount as the 400 computer at the time. It was really the first Xbox ever created, and I'm sure that the Xbox owes a lot to this great console. The Xbox was originally going to be called the Direct-X box. If you don't know what DirectX is then do some googling and KZbin searching and then you will understand.

The other problem with the 5200, and I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned here, is that most of the games were about the same as versions on the 8-bit computers of the time, including Atari's own Atari 400/800 XL, which allowed you to use 2600 controllers. It's just a system that has no real reason to exist nowadays.

Pat, you really getting some hate for "featuring" James without actually featuring him. Hell, he was probably in it less than the other people. I get what you were trying to do and everyone here wants the show to do well, but all you did was make the fans that regularly watch the show think James was going to headline this segment when he, in fact, wasn't...

+otakuman23 there's this thing called wisdom... it allows people to make good decisions intstead of bad ones, if you dont want to play an old game remastered, then dont buy it. its not that hard. and if enough people dont buy them, they will stop selling them. but right now, there's a reason why they are doing those; and its not hard to understand.

bad controller that broke, and the games that were the same as the Atari 2600 games but with better graphics. Yet no exclusive games that sold the console. Sounds way too familiar in regards to recycling games that were used from the previous gen. Better on the Atari 7800.

I know that system had its flaws, the thing weighed a ton, and the controllers were WTF. XD Saying this... the games DID however LOOK better... but sadly, wasn't enough to save the console itself and thus.... became ANCIENT HISTORY. ^_^

Atari 5200 controllers are better than the coleco and intellivision controllers in that era. Are they the most reliable? no, they do break but when they work, it's an awesome controller. 5200 just an upgrade to the 2600? No, then you haven't played star raiders, countermeasure, robotron, space dungeon, and real sportsbaseball. all games that make the console unique. People that complain about the system didn't grow up with it.
