I have the first Atari flashback, I got it at dollar general years ago on Christmas Eve! It was a lot of fun playing Atari on Christmas. I never had an Atari when I was a kid. We had a apple 2 that my dad needed for work. I had a bunch of of the classic arcade games that I played on it.

Finished your video. Good job! Personally, I'm not a fan of this particular product, but I'm glad to see companies continue to release mini systems. I'm always on the lookout for a new, well made, and fun plug n' play. I have a collection of 6 of them, and they are all constantly enjoyed by the family year round.

Very cool. I don't know that I'm a big enough classic Atari fan to make this purchase but I do have the Atari 50 collection pre-ordered for switch. I didn't have an Atari as a kid (we had a TI/99) so I'm looking forward to playing classic games I've never played and some I've never heard of.

The handheld flashback had what seemed like the arcade rom of Frogger running. Always thought that was odd, until seeing this running a non 2600 Space Invaders. 2600 is a classic.

At least on the earlier Flashbacks they have been using the NES version of Frogger. Frogger was never released for the FC/NES, but they have had it on NES-on-a-chip (NOAC) plug-and-play systems in the past. Same goes for Space Invaders, but this did actually release on the Famicom. So there you go. The Frogger and Space Invaders included on the Flashbacks are actually Nintendo games. And if you go back to the very first Flashback console, all of the games included was actually ported to NES-on-a-chip.

I was a longtime Atari owner from when it first came out, and I own the Flashback 8 system too, and I noticed that it has that same Space Invaders rendition on it, but I noticed that Asteroids you showed isn't the original either..it looks like they used the original but took the colors out so that it would look more like the arcade version, but keep the same game play and sounds making it look like vectrex ,like the arcade did. awesome vid as always

Think between the 50th collection for switch and the last collection on switch I am good. Also have 2 out of the 3 collections on my xbox one. I just found out that there is a new Atari Flashback, it does not appear on the AtGames page, however it still has the same problem as the X version, it does not have USB ports for the controllers. I know that it is very nostalgic to have the DB-9 ports, however it is a bit inconvenient when looking for an alternative joystick. It is also a pity that the SD slot that Flashhack 9 had was lost.

OMG It has River Raid! ❤ Huge fan of this game. It could be it was the very first vertical shmup, still very playable and enjoyable to this day. That … “barn storming” game feels incredibly similar to that stupid yet addictive flappy bird game.

Hey John! Cool review! I reached out to Atari about this over 2-3 weeks ago and they didn't respond. I wasn't sure if it was real or not, the box art looked a litlte washed out on the website I went to (and it wasn't on many others.) To be safe, I didn't purchase it. Looks like the gold control sticks and such are different and the 50 branding, looks to be about it. The added Robot Tank or other few games that are added, I'm unsure if it justifies the $100 price. With regard to frame rate...the vertical sync signal is entirely under software control on the 2600...so each game could do whatever they want. If they didn't render a consistent number of lines in each frame, the picture could stretch or roll. I have an older Atari Flashback that seems to ignore that and just assumes every VSYNC represents 1/60 of a second, which could be far off in some circumstances. For example, Maze Craze goes for a few seconds without any vertical sync while generating a maze. On my Flashback, it's pretty much instantaneous due to the lack of vertical syncs during that time.

At least this helped me remember that Pong's anniversary is 18 days forward from when I write this. As for myself though, I have my MiSTer plus the Atari Pong Blast! from 2019 ATGames made for my 2600 fix so I am good.

I have one of the earlier ones that have a SD slot that I use for occasions for when I want to play 2600 games on my LCD tv, but usually I just prefer playing them on my 7800 on a crt. I am interested in the paddles though as mine are shot. Do they work on a real system? (sorry if you already addressed that as I'm hearing impaired, thanks.)

Same here, but their Legacy Cabinet’s been doing fine and their collection joint published on game consoles have been doing amazing, especially including all 3 Swordquest games minus Airworld. However, I still wish Activision classics and ET was included.

I feel like the Flashback series started to get kind of over used around the flashback 8 gold, when they practically gave you everything you needed for a mini 2600. Also did anyone notice that you can't really get any of the flashback consoles on Amazon anymore? Most of the flashbacks (Flashback 8 Gold and 9 gold, Flashback 4, 5 ,6 ,8 and even the portable ones) aren't available anymore! Did Atgames stop producing the Flashback consoles? I even checked the official Atgames store and all the Flashbacks were sold out! Is the end of the Atari Flashbacks?

I tried ordering one of these. Seems they are only sold on this "Microless" site in the UAE (?!?!?). What a horrible experience. When I placed my order, CC company declined it the first time and had to re-submit. Then the site auto-entered my city wrong, but placed the order and I don't see any zip code. I tried calling them, but the USA can't seem to reach the UAE and the phone company keeps running me around in circles. I sent an e-mail and chat message, but haven't heard back. Hopefully, my $130 console (after tax, S&H) doesn't end up with some dude in another city. Ugh

Robot Tank! Finally! They had trouble getting that to work on the previous versions of their emulator and it hasn't appeared on the Flashbacks before. One of my favorite Activision games. I was disappointed it wasn't on the Flashback 8 Activision Gold a couple years ago.

I'm curious if they fixed the black and white switch issue with games like secret quest and a few others. I was helping them with testing a firmware on the problem a few years back with the issue of getting that select menu to appear as it didn't work originaly in flashback x deluxe due to them removing the black and white switch option.

@Draxxon Lives yes but it didn't work with the last update on the flashback x deluxe however it did work with just a flashback x. the deluxe was a little different. that's why I was helping with the firmware. It wouldn't stay or in my case work at all. This caused a lot of problems for those games. I was finally able to get a functioning firmware from them that fixes that issue for the flashback x deluxe however they never released this firmware yet.

It appears to just be the Flashback X with a 50th anniversary badge (which is honestly less attractive than the Fuji logo), "gold" switches, and a remix of the games. Like the Flashback X the appearance of the unit is a more appealing but imperfect replica of the original VCS. Whether it can be modded to add games is unknown. It was possible with the X, but a minor PIA to do and required attaching USB storage via OTG cable. It is going backwards that they have completely abandoned the 2.4GHz wireless controllers they introduced with the Flashback 8 and refined with the Flashback 9. The SD card slot of the Flashback 9 also is never coming back. Although imperfect, the Flashback 9 Gold is frankly the best of the lot, the easiest to customize with additional ROMs, including any from these various remixes. The FB9's main drawback is that regular paddles do not work correctly and there is no source for any that do, but you can actually mod a set of paddles to work with it, or just play paddle games on an FB8 or X. I had just assumed after the Flashback X that these would be discontinued with the arrival of the VCS, but I guess even this product has jumped on the 50th anniversary bandwagon now. It would be nice if AtGames or whoever would just make a single Atari Flashback product with all the features people want, but they're clearly not going to do that. Overall these were pretty bad until the Flashback 8 Gold with HDMI, and if you have a Flashback 9 or X then you almost certainly don't need another one. If this becomes more widely available then I'd only get it if you don't already have one of the more recent models or you are just serious about collecting these.

great collection on this atari system and descent amount of classic atari 2600 games. i really wished hero was on the flash back 7 and there is no slot for a memory stick so i dont know if i can mod it or not to play hero on it or you can even put other games on the flashback 7, astroid looks different on your console it seems they put the arcade version and not the 2600 version i know as i had the 2600 version back in the 80's on my atari 2600, shame frogger isnt on you console as its on the flashback 7 and yet the again its not the 2600 version and most likey the arcade version, atgames really like to mess with these classic consoles and dont put the original 2600 version on them

Let’s hope that atari will make 2 special editions of their flashback systems,1 with sega games on it along with their own games with a giany sega logo on it and 1 with nintendo games ob it alongside their own games along with nintendo’s giant logo on it, (whether it’s atari 2600,5200,7800 or a combination of both versions of it on those flashbacks) BUT i garantee this will sell like hot cakes among sega & nintebo fans😁 Because that will be something unique and something different because as far as i do know they do put many of the same games on it whether it’s centipede,millioede or yards revenge etc,,, wich getting old,

They had me working the addition of some long-missed games on the Flashback. They lost me with the removal of the SD slot.

Games could still be played externally on the Atari Flashback X (which uses the same shell as this 50th Anniversary edition), even without the SD slot. You just have to use a thumb drive instead of an SD card and you have to have a Y shaped USB dongle so you can have both the thumb drive and the power brick plugged in at the same time (as the mini only has one USB port). Then its just a matter of installing the official patch off of AtGames website that gives it the ability to read games off of a thumb drive. Its assumable the 50th Anniversary Flashback will work in a similar manner.

My only major gripe, aside from them putting paddle games on the non gold version, is that every single original joystick I've tried fits so loosely into the port. It wants to fall out, causing pin connection to not quite line up, so even a perfect working cx40, or slik stik, or wico to maybe not go left, or up, or whatever unless you finagle it. I actually don't mind the ones that come with it, def loose, but sometimes nice to have instead of all your body weight on an old Vader joy. They just seem kinda cheap, like I wonder how long they'd last. Still cool but should be $40 cool.

The Flashback 50th and the Flashback X they did prior actually splits the difference. Those Flashback minis have 5 switches. So its one less than the 6-switch model, but one more than the 4-switch model.

This look pretty cools but Tutankhamen and Frogger will be missed for sure. There’s always games on these that we know won’t ever be played and are wasted picks so I can’t help but imagine what kind of game list the fans would put together and if the companies would consider a pole on it. Obviously there’s some that will be an issue due to licensing or not if there’s enough interest to preorder so they can afford the licensing but at the very least filter out the rubbish. I know I’m nitpicking.

At PRGE I got a USB Atari controller adapter and once asked David Crane the best way to play kaboom on the PC with Stella and he said "you don't. You play it on original hardware" And I have to say, after struggling for weeks I have to agree. Kaboom is one of those games that, at the higher levels, does not tolerate any lag whatsoever. And forget about trying to use a mouse or analog stick. You absolutely need to use paddles. There's just no other way. This is one of the biggest problems with the new 50th anniversary software... They include all of these pong/Breakout type games that you can play with modern controllers and they're terrible.... And they don't give the retro-obsessed millennials who have never used paddle controllers any indication that their gameplay experience is going to be terrible without them.

Yeah, even with the paddle controllers there is serious lag when playing games like Kaboom on these devices. If you want the proper (and best) experience, you have to use original hardware on a crt.

One hundred dollars? Hoo hoo, AtGames must be smoking the good stuff. Not a chance. Were you planning on reviewing the Atari 50 collection for Switch, Xbox, and Playstation? Because that's more appealing to me, although the selection of games for the Lynx in particular is mystifying. No Chip's Challenge or Blue Lightning, but Malibu Bikini Volleyball...? Might as well throw Gordo 106 and Kung Food on there while you're at it.

I'm guessing any standard micro usb charger should work it looks like. These were used on most Android phones before switching over to the newer USB- C

Thier is some kind of weird licencing issue with the Atari 2600 version of Space invaders.

$130 with delivery costs. I'm torn whether to get it or not. If I don't now scalpers will overcharge the hell outta of it in the future. I hate that nowadays with everything

Weird that they didn't go with the 2600 version of Space Invaders. And what's going on with Asteroids? That's not what the original 2600 game looks like, either.
