Commenting for algorithm pickup. This entire series is professional quality and deserves a FAR higher subscriber count! Astrosmash was brilliant. I remember a Coca-Cola promotional tie-in with bottlecaps as well in 1981-82 where i won several free Cokes thanks to it. The first bottlecap related tie-in that I can remember honestly. It was a very new idea at the time. The family I knew that were quite rich had an Intellivision along with every (I mean EVERY) Intellivision game that was released, and astrosmash was a favourite whenever I visited them.

1981 looks like a short year for Intellivision. Astrosmash is definitely one of the classics though. Looking forward to the M-Network video.

A whopping six games!

I don't think Atari had that many in 1981 also. Was there something about a chip shortage? I think programmers leaving Atari reduced it's number of games. It's too bad Mattel didn't launch the M-Network line for Atari in 1981 when there was less 3rd-party competition, so maybe their games might have done well too? Maybe the fewer number of games made those that succeeded more profitable and caused investors to put money into Atari? Which when 1982 showed Atari doubling-down on the VCS with Pac-Man, and the 5200 rollout being a dud, caused investors to freak out when they said their increase in profits would be 15% not 50%.

Awesome & informative as always, Kevin! I absolutely love this channel. As a kid from this era of video games, I find their back stories are endlessly fascinating.

Wow. I was just discussing in reviews for Omega Race that Asteroids may be the more popular game, but there's no advantage to moving your ship, because the center is safest. Now you showed a clip of Meteor, 19:40, where the ship stays in the center, but when you move it the asteroid field moves! That's what I said should have been done to make it a better game! Definitely superior to Asteroids as we know it! I have Astroblast for Atari that I picked up on the cheap or as a hand-me-down, but don't think I played it much, since I don't have it on my high-score pages I saved. Losing points for them hitting the ground is a bummer. It's interesting that you found sales figures for Astrosmash and other Intellivision games. Some time ago when I looked, I heard their Major League Baseball game was their highest seller at 900,000 copies. So did any break 1 million? Someone who doesn't swear did a review of Bowling! for the Magnavox Odyssey² saying it doesn't even follow the rules of bowling with regards to spares and strikes! Somehow they made better versions of Baseball! and Football! in 1978 than Atari did, considering they both have 1-button joysticks, but failed on all other games. I have to wonder whether getting a license to use "PBA" did anything for Intellivision's sales of Bowling? Interesting that Boxing didn't have a license. But too bad they couldn't do a 1-player version for this or their other sports games. Was there some kind of console limitation to A.I. calculations? Sports games were their thing, but I didn't think much of their next ad that I interpret as them saying "we have space games, too."

As always, very cool. The release date of Boxing, and to a lesser extent Bowling, are intriguing. An additional data point is that a PlayCable program schedule has been found listing both games as being broadcast in July 1981, along with Armor Battle, Auto Racing, Blackjack, Backgammon, Baseball, Football, Golf, Horse Racing, Roulette, Skiing, Soccer, Space Battle and Tennis.

Great to see Intellivision coming into it's own. The controller will always be a barrier to me, but I do very much appreciate what these games were going for and that they do have actual depth.

Hey there, I'm looking forward to watching this! I was just wondering why you set it to age-restricted?

Please disregard, looks like someone already asked that question, so I will watch and find out for myself. Atari Archive After Dark...?

It’ll all make sense about 28 minutes in! Astrosmash has a more lurid history than you’d expect.
