I think Jolly (and their second channel The Korean Englishman) helped Hongjoong learn English because they usually have Korean subs. Josh majored in Korean at school and his wife is Korean, so their channel is really about introducing westerners to Korean culture. British High schoolers trying Korean food is top tier entertainment XD

this is genuinely one of my fav Ateez interviews ever bc of how genuine it is. Josh and Olly seemed to really get along with and understand the humor of San and Hongjoong. A lot of the comments on this video are also casual viewers who came to respect San and Joong bc of how they behaved in the video. I just love it

21:20 That's exactly how my mom learned English! As a kid, she watched the Peanuts cartoon and The Fresh Prince of Bel-air to help her learn. RM has also said the same thing: he learned English by watching Friends! Listening to foreign music can probably help you learn certain words and phrases quickly, but song lyrics aren't always complete sentences or literal thoughts. TV scripts emulate real-world conversations, though. That's how they help you learn to speak colloquially and fluently :)

21:21 yes! It actually works! I watch k-dramas (sometimes or when I have time) and while watching them, i would be doing something else. For me, this works like a charm. I would learn words, sentences, and phrases. Or just by listening to a song or show in a different language, you can learn at any time. No matter if you’re a slow or fast learner, you can learn at any time :)

This video was the best birthday present ❤ Josh and Olly are awesome. Their channel Korean Englishman is so cool. Josh married a Korean woman and speaks Korean, so they introduce people to Korean food and culture. They're actually pretty famous and have done videos with other idols, some of the Marvel cast and were even acknowledged by the King of England 😁Most recently they did a mini series on their channel where they took a few college boys who had been part of their "introduction to Korean food and culture videos" since high school, and enrolled them in Korean military training for a few days. I definitely recommend reacting to those videos, I think you'll have a blast. Here's a link to the full playlist if you're interested kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYqvoaZnfd5kd9U

Watching shows in the languages you are learning lets you pick up on how words sound and the tempo ppl use etc etc, but its important to speak with it sometimes and to understand what theyre saying so its like watching and studying at the same time, I'm learning korean (after 10 years of listening to kpop) and ive def learned some things subconsciously and now that I'm actually studying its a nice low line to stand on compared to have never like listened to the language

It's all about input, input, input! I've been consuming Korean content for 15 years; I've never taken a single formal class, barely ever skimmed a textbook, but I can understand the gist of most conversations. Obviously I need to be making a more intentional effort to learn more thoroughly and be able to have conversations, but you really need to be absorbing and cementing what you're learning by listening to spoken Korean (or whatever language it is). It's just a part of practice, and the more you listen, the more you'll start to understand. Lyrics can be helpful, but you should also be taking in real conversations and hearing the language the way it's used in real life.

21:06 Answering your question, actually being exposed to media or content in other languages actually works. I’m a Spanish native speaker, I’ve grown surrounded by only Spanish speakers. But I was exposed to music and movies in English since I was very little, I studied after that in an English learning class, BUT it didn’t helped me as much as the media, I played videos, music, movies in English with subtitles to understand and try not to read them that much so my brain could accustom, and it worked, no matter how much you try to learn it, your brain will find it easier if you relate it to something you enjoy. I’m now bilingual and can easily understand and speak English.

So I think you didn’t understand, so let me explain it to you. "San" in Korean means "mountain," and literally, it translates to that. San’s parents named him that because they wanted him to grow up big and strong (if I remember correctly). His big sister is called Haneul, which means "sky." A bit more info about their names: Songhwa always says he is Mars because Hwasong (화성) is the Korean word for Mars, and that’s SH's name spelled backwards. A fun fact about Korean naming customs is that if you have two kids, parents sometimes name them with similar-sounding syllables or even almost identical names, like San and his sister’s names. From what I remember, Yunho has a younger brother named Jonho (I think). You should definitely look up their family trees they’re so cool and interesting, and the meanings behind their names are fascinating!

21:21 yeassss Nigel! English is not my first language and I learnt it through watching a lot of content, reading books and playing games in English ! I think it makes sense why we can learn a language just by increasing our input bec that’s exactly how babies learn languages too !

Regarding if watching shows can help you learn a language: If you subtitles in a language you do understand, it really does help so much. When I got into kpop in 2011, I never intended to really learn korean or anything, but after about 5 years, I realized I could pretty comfortably understand the basics of what's happening in a video without any english subs. And, again, I really wasn't even trying to learn anything. It was all passive. So if I did do this whole thing more intentionally to learn korean, I imagine the progress would be staggering. Of course there would be limits but it is kind of true.

You can't learn a language by listening to the music alone. You gotta watch videos and shows in your target language to really immerse yourself and help you recognize everyday sayings and expressions. It also does help you with your accent and pronunciation. Music only ever talks about a few things but if you wanna talk about things in your everyday life, watching shows/videos, or listening to podcasts is definitely the way to go. (Of course actually learning the grammar rules goes a long way too)
