Sounds like an expensive process that doesn't reduce violent crime. So now law enforcement knows the history of how a gun travels from crime to crime. With dumb luck the criminals keep the same gun and they get caught years later with it.

This is an investigative tool to help prosecute criminals if they’re caught with the firearms. It turns out many criminals are stupid and do stupid things. Go figure. I’m no fan of the AFT and their anti-constitutional doings. These are the types of things they should be doing instead of worrying about homemade firearms, pistol, braces and other legal things standard law abiding citizens have/do.

There is no way they can take a casing and tell it 100 percent without a doubt came from the same gun just based on markings on the case. Thousands of guns of the same model are built on a assembly line Do you really think that none of them will create the identical patterns on a casing?

You obviously don't know anything metal milling. If a milling machine process 100000000 parts, in this case 1000000000 gun barrels, not one will be exactly the same as another. The microscopic imperfections on the inside of each gun barrel leave unique marks on bullet casings.

What they look are the following ; extractor makers, ejector impact mark, firing-pin indentation primer marks, primer impacts marking, the ammo types, etc..... So a gun like a glock17 that leaves casing could be matched back to a specific gun if the gun was found. So if you have a casing from a crime scene you could easily identify if the casing is from a ruger p89 or glock 17 or S&W for example.
