Very inspirational. I relate strongly to that narrative that points out the meditative aspect of carving. I am only at the first beginning of stone carving but your story touches on my appeal towards this art that I could not verbalise. Thank you for that.

🤔👌👍👏👏👏 I carve by hand freestyle no pre-plan or drawings Its like im just cleaning away the stone to reveal it! You are also right about that meditation & the hypnotic affect. When i get into the zone, hours can fly by. Also it's far better than meditating in a Buddhist Monastery? Well you cant eat after mid-day !😉😂

What a beautiful video. I learned more in 8 minutes than I did in a whole semester of 'the philosophy of art'

Wow Athar! I am totally on with you. I am going to try this. The universe has gifted me with the inspiration to start carving again. And this is doing so with some make shift tools, but it is more of an meditative experience than ever before. So I am collecting some quality carbide hand tools, and not worrying about the cost. I pay my rent, buy tools, and then food. I use granite stones from the beach. Long story short, time seems to stop when collecting the stones, and again while carving them into, what I call Buddha Bowls. Thank you for making and sharing this video🙏

I loved this video! I have to wonder, though. I have a rough piece of limestone I found at Grimes Glenn, and I would think that if I slapped it, it would hurt my hands no matter how careful I am. Also, would the hardness of the stone affect the speed of its shaping? For example, if you smack a piece of marble and a piece of soapstone for a week, would the soapstone be more dented?

I love that Michelangelo quote. You said that he implied 'removal with a hammer and chisel' but does not say it; I also always meditate on how he implies, but does not say, that stone is what is being removed. But to continue your track of a more expansive sculpture practice, what else can be created by the removal of what other things? Does it even have to be material?

That is an excellent remark Nicholas. Those two questions are exactly what I tackled in my PhD thesis. 1.What is removed? 2. How is it removed? Departing from the materiality of stone I quickly move on to less tangible concepts such as borders, identity, human rights etc. If you haven't see it, I'd love to hear your opinion about it. "a stone that is very dear to me" Understood! It only makes much sense. Could you explore for us your thoughts and feelings about whether you could ever use another stone, or a chisel, bare hammer, rasp, or river, on this stone? I realize this may be a long-form topic. Thank you for your vlogs!

Thanks for the question David. If I got your question right, think I would limit the use of one specific technique to a stone. So, If I would would use other tools, it would be on other stones specially reserved for only one specific tool. But then, there would be practically no end to it...

to channel the ether I need a hammer and chisel the same way the flowing water requires a river bed to flow, to carry the energy efficiently so as to manifest the form

My Lord enjoys watching humans with skills and abilities to carve stone. He has requested that I ask you to time lapes the project you were working on while communicating with non-humans. When you feel like you are finished let me know.
