Whether it be space-time itself, the multi-verse, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster you would like to know if something had to first exist for infinity due to the problems with infinite regression. If we assume the Big Bang Theory is correct, then there is no "before" the Big Bang in the usual sense of the word "before". If something caused the Big Bang, that something is outside of time and - for the lack of a better word - "infinite" or always having existed from at least our limited vantage point. Because this entity is outside of our timeline, it could be viewed as a "first cause" or "prime mover". This doesn't mean this entity itself wasn't created by something else in its own separate timeline; but for logic to prevail: If we keep going back, traversing possibly multiple timelines from possibly multiple universes, it all ultimately has to fall back on one cause, outside of all the other timelines, thus being infinite from their vantage points. This singularity must in fact exist given the logic above. As you noted, this doesn't mean it is a personal being like a God, or even anything more than an inanimate object for our purposes, but we have sufficient evidence that it's out there, or was at one point in "time".

I visited Lourdes once with my disabled Aunt who was in a wheelchair. She was getting progressively more poorly, and wanted to visit the famous shrine so that she may benefit from the healing powers that emanate there. It was a wonderful trip until on the 2nd day I slipped and let go of the wheelchair. My aunt careered into the healing waters and was almost submerged, luckily the other pilgrims present managed to pull her and the wheelchair out in time. The Pope and an atheist were debating the existence or otherwise of god. After hours of fruitless argument, the Pope says “The trouble with you is, you are like a blind man, in a dark room, looking for a black cat, that isn’t there!” The atheist replies-“ Well your Holiness, that’s something we have in common.” “What do you mean?” Inquires the Pope. “Well, you too are like a blind man, in a dark room, looking for a black cat, that isn’t there. The only difference is, you have found it!” A joke from the wonderful Irish comic, the late, and very great, Dave Allen.

I call it *loop thinking* Evidence or logic is put forward that is in direct conflict with the individuals beliefs. Upon encountering this, the individuals mind resets and loops back to the belief as if no credible evidence or argument was put forward, so that the belief can continue to survive. It's fight or flight. And sense the individual knows they can't win the fight, flight is the only option left in order to continue believing.

@Truthus Maximus I don't think so. I've seen "intelligent theists" debate Matt and they often don't have a problem with atheism as a lack of belief. Atheism isn't truth-apt (doesn't make any claims that can be true or false at all). I think the reason why these more intelligent theists don't call in is because they tend to be more self-conscious of their appearance on the show and don't want to look irrational. Matt is a good debater.

@Truthus Maximus you are fractally wrong. The default position is NON Belief. Athiesm is instantly falsafiable: simply show any actual evidence a god exsists. When I was about 3-4 years old, I used to wake up everyday to my entire window (which was covered by a large curtain with flowery shapes), and this window was like a window to another dimension, where I saw many people celebrating at at banquet-like party, ( almost like that ending page of Asterix where they celebrated at the end of every adventure at that large circular table), and they all greeted me and waved to me, and danced around. I was absolutely convinced this happened every day for about a year. Then it started fading and started getting harder and harder to focus and enter this setting. Eventually it subsided and I sat there waiting and waiting every day hoping they would re-open that portal to me and say hi again. Don's "Failures of Christianity" segment is just that: a segment. During the call-in part of the show, it tends to be all about Matt. Great episode! But yet again, Kelly represents the people who for some reason are so unwilling to just say "I don't know". Why is this so difficult? If ypu can't admit a limit to your knowledge, how do you intend to learn anything?

A similar thing is when someone notices an expected thing hasn’t happened in while when it should of happened. Then when that expected thing happened they think they predicted the event. When the only reason they noticed anything is because they were expecting that thing to happen. “It hasn’t rained in a while” later day it rains “I totally predicted the rain” 🤦♂️

Just on the first caller on a couple of ways the 2 1/2 yo could move a bed! 1. Friction can be built up over time. That is if you leave something in one place for an extended period of time (plus put weight on it every night!) then it can become 'stuck' in that place. Once it is forcibly removed from the stuck spot, the built up friction no longer exists. It may (and often does if you ever move fridges etc) have the ability to now slide without too much force at all. Obviously once you place it back to where it was once embedded, the flooring (carpet vinyl etc) at that point may have been affected so much that the bed literally (seemingly) wants to go back into the same spot again. 2. In the old days LOL. Nearly everything had caster wheels on them. Generally all single beds also had caster wheels. These days we have removed many of these caster wheels from beds and TV stands and large cabinets and even fridges (some only have wheels at the back). IF this bed had (normally always fitted) caster wheels on the bed stands, then quite obviously little force would be required to roll it around on the floor. BUT, if a parents had found that a bed (with caster wheels) was used to squash their son and even cause their son to be unconscious from the lack of oxygen (or fright). THEN any loving parent may remove those caster wheels, and therefore avoiding the bed to ever move around again. From 2 1/2 years old to who knows when (could have been 15 years!) this person would have realized their bed is NOT on caster wheels, and therefore when trying to push it would have thought that's TOO hard for a 2 1/2 yo to do. UNBEKNOWNST that the parent never informed the child/teenager that ACTUALLY we took the caster wheels off, and never told you because YOUR story was so nice (in their view). You could say they deceived him. Between lack of friction, and what the parents may have done to stop the bed ever moving again, plus because it was 50 years ago! There could be NUMEROUS possibilities, with the absolute last crazy story of intelligent aliens helped. But NEVER will there be an idea: OH that was supernatural! Since we presently have ZERO evidence of any supernatural thing. If supernatural things were happening to say all Christians or 'spiritualists' constantly, and we could prove, yep it was definitely a possibility. Then that would be ok. BUT presently we have ZERO spiritual supernatural stuff happening EVER. Although we do have a lot of stories :) EDIT// Since the old guy (emphasis on old doesn't automatically make someone wise. ie 'Old wise man' is not actually true; men don't suddenly become wise at some 'old' date, actually their brain biologically deteriorates). Said: Oh I have OTHER stories too, and its 'ALL THESE STORIES TOGETHER' that prove why he believes in spiritual stuff. Clearly shows he CANNOT reason effectively. Because its not the accumulation of bad stories that then equal evidence. Even 1 single story, all on its own, that shows a tiny weany itsy bitsy tidbit feather of EVIDENCE, would be evidence! And since his story did NOT have any evidence, they any accumulation of other stories would be just as insignificant. Plus he obviously began with with best PROOF first, and that FAILED 100%

The only exception I can think of when someone thinks the accumulation of experience (although the individual experiences are lame) is if someone can prove the experiences they had happened on the same day at the same time of day and the circumstances were specifically similar. For example, the dude remembers when he was 2 or 3 (which VERY few of us remember that early on in our lives) his brother smothered him between a mattress and a wall and it was 3:47pm on a Saturday and it was the 11th of May. AND when he was 11, his brother smothered him between a mattress and a wall and it was 3:47pm on a Saturday and it was the 11th of May. And when he was 19 his brother smothered him between a mattress and a wall and it was 3:47pm on a Saturday and it was the 11th of May. THEN i might say, if you can prove all this, that's pretty weird. It still doesn't prove you have a soul.

@MrDanAng15 жыл бұрын
I think Kelly's argument is an argument AGAINST one single god, not for it. The result is ever changing, it never happen the same way, and it is extremely rarely due to one single cause. Two people can hear the same argument and one is convinced, the other is not. If one or two people shoot at a glass window, there is a multitude of causes, there is raw materials for glass and metal assembled, then refined, then formed to guns and bullets and glass windows, then the windows is mounted in a frame and bullets is loaded into the guns before shooting the glass window. If a single link in this chain of causality is missing, then there will be no shattering of a glass window.
