Gentlemen, I wanted to add something about the botched abortion scene since you guys were wondering about the blood loss depicted. Also, thank you for this excellent review of Hell House - I had never heard of these (I grew up in and went to college in California) until a friend of mine moved to a southern state for a job, and he told me that evangelicals were everywhere and constantly referred to Halloween as “Satan’s holiday.” Sigh...he hated it. Anyway my wife suffered a miscarriage (she was about 10 weeks pregnant) some years ago. It was a terrible thing to witness, and my heart broke at my total inability to help her beyond getting her to the hospital ASAP. She lost an ENORMOUS amount of blood. In fact they were preparing her for a transfusion when they rushed her into surgery. What they showed with the girl there (and I get that the situations are different) was just the beginning. I won’t get too graphic but I will never forget it. Of course it also cemented my beliefs in the necessity of good, available healthcare for women. No back alley abortions or “at home miscarriages” again. Ever.

THE WORLD IS WORSE NOW THAN IT'S EVER BEEN!!! *Gets in his car and drives to the store, where there is tons of cheap, safe food to buy, then goes home to his house that is by all measurable standards safer than it's ever been in the history of the world, fills a glass with free, clean, practically unlimited drinking water, stubs his toe on the couch, goes to a hospital and gets a wound that could have been fatal in the past treated in about a half hour, then goes back home and slips into his soft, comfortable bed with the thermostat set at just the right temperature for optimal sleep* Yup. Teth47 Well, it could be how no one can seem to agree on anything anymore... Accept for right now, apparently. Or maybe our society's so determined to gain consumers that we're teaching everyone to be unsatisfied with their lives, and we tell them that what we have can make their lives better (which, most of the time, is a lie). It could just be that we've gained a bad habit of lying and letting ourselves be misguided.

Wow. I find it so weird that a school would make one of its policies "Don't ask stupid questions." When I was growing up, the motto of every school I went to was "There are no stupid questions!" and they encouraged curiosity (almost to a fault. A lot of lessons would be interrupted with the teacher going into deep conversations and explanations that took up the whole class period just to answer one question).

MountcastleHorror Saying that they have no idea is untrue. They have a general idea based on brain chemistry, and some medicines are easier to predict. Plus, medication isn't really meant to be used alone. It is supposed to be used in conjunction with other therapies. The meds fight the symptoms, the therapy fights the problem. What they do in the movie is far worse. They do neither, and then act like its cured.
@TheIndependentLens
@TheIndependentLens 8 жыл бұрын
davis smith It's pretty darn close to having no idea. They don't even have a test that they run for your supposed "chemical imbalance." If you look at the percentages of psychotropic drugs prescribed in the U.S. vs. the rest of the world, the fact that it is a mindless industry of profit is clearly seen. Your problem is that you want to believe this science and it is really more pseudo-science for profit. I'm not saying they cannot be beneficial to a small percentage of people, but the mass prescribing of those drugs is completely ridiculous and dangerous.
@LeafseasonMagbag
@LeafseasonMagbag 8 жыл бұрын
MountcastleHorror I do agree with you, but what you are saying is not the fault of the scientists. Also, saying they have NO idea is still untrue, and has nothing to do with drug prescription rates. The problem here is that predicting the entire possible range of side-effects across AN ENTIRE POPULATION is nearly impossible. We can identify a drugs active effects, but how it reacts with other brain chemicals can be much harder to workout. If this is confusing, I apologize. It is hard to explain this through the internet.

That was definitely a blank that he fired. It was still a dumb thing to do. Blanks are dangerous, especially out of a firearm not equipped with a muzzle deflector. Blanks also should not be fired indoors. As for the blanks that the kids were using, they have to have been modified by the gun guy to be very under power. A full power blank would have killed a person holding it to their head 90% of the time. In the military we have muzzle deflectors when we shoot blanks and we still don't shoot at anyone if they are closer than 20ft. Blanks are serious enough business that they would have already has serious injuries if they hadn't done something more off camera.

When I lived in Tulsa, I went to GUTS Church's (actual name) Hell House one year as they go all out on it. The 4 things I remember most from it 1. The end room had an illusion of a man in a 3-piece-suit turning into the Devil. I have an interest in magic, and I exclaimed, "Oh, my God! You're doing the Girl-to-Gorilla trick! Can I see your setup?" I got shushed. 2. When you leave the Hell House, you go outside and are under a big tent where members of the church are waiting to preach to you. I had a young hipster come up to me, and before he said anything, I said, "Can you honestly look me in the eye and tell me that the loving, peaceful version of Jesus you want me to believe in would condone scare tactics like this?" He cast his eyes down and said no. 3. One young teenage girl got really freaked out about it so several church members surrounded her to preach to her. I saw two of them shoot each other a look that said, "We got one." 4. The hot dogs at their concession stand were surprisingly good. Like really, really, good.

I have only gone to one hell house in my life, and I wished I had gone to more. The very first room Jesus was chained to a post, with a executioner “whipping” him. We were all lined up against the wall as the executioner got in our faves asking “which one of us wanted to whip Jesus?”. After an awkward pause, I assumed we were supposed to answer so I responded “Is that a rhetorical question or...?”. As my friends laughed we were quickly escorted out of the room. I was still religious at the time, and I wonder how it would be now that I’m more agnostic.

I live in FT. Worth, where we had a church shooting several years ago (Wedgwood Baptist church) More than one local church that put on 'hell houses' simulated a church (or other mass ) shooting scene. The shooting was Sept, so it was beyond insensitive The youth from my church was at the shooting*, and I know at least one of our kids went to a HH, got caught up in the scene and was traumatized. He still experiences mental distress to this day. So. I have a special loathing for these 'hell houses.'

I'm simultaneously amazed and baffled by the fact that these people built a temporary structure for this hell house year after year. The ones I went to growing up were inside the actual church during the week or so leading up to Halloween. The scenes/skits took place in Sunday school classrooms, the nursery, the foyer, etc. All the existing furniture got moved into other rooms, and the doors we weren't supposed to go into were covered with white sheets. (The fluorescent ceiling lights were also covered with red, plastic tablecloths to make the lighting all spooky.) The last room was the sanctuary, where the youth pastor was waiting to help people convert or rededicate their lives or whatever. I thought that was a ton of work, since everything had to be put back in place overnight on Saturday to be ready for Sunday morning (sometimes twice, depending on what day of the week Halloween fell on), but this takes it to a whole 'nother level!

I'm agnostic, but my Pentecostal friend wanted me to go to a church thing with her. I agreed without really asking what it was (cause I didn't really care) and it ended up being a hell house. It was... Interesting. Another girl who went to that church was on the fence about religion after they showed us hell she started crying. They then took us to "heaven" and gave everyone a chance to get saved. That girl ended up getting "saved". I felt kinda bad cause she told me after that she didn't really want to get "saved" but she felt like she had to. She said she was more scared into doing it because of the slim chance that hell might actually exist.

slight correction, if she did scream for help, then she wouldn't be punished. But that is only for a virgin who was scheduled to be married. If a man rapes a virgin who is not scheduled to be married, then the man has to pay 50 shekels to the father and must never divorce the woman he raped. here is the full verses 23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death-the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you. 25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, 27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her. 28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels[c] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

So I know it's like 3 years later, but just wanted to comment. There really aren't any complications that are associated with a one-time dose of plan B. It's safe for practically any age. There may be issues if someone uses it regularly (a few times a month), but that's so rare because very few people consider plan b to be their preferred birth control. The cost alone would be prohibitive after a few doses ($40 generic, $50 brand). Now, spotting (think mini-period that may last a week or two) is common. But bleeding out like what is shown here means something else happened and it wasn't due to the emergency contraceptive. It doesn't even pose a risk of prolonged infertility since fertility returns to that person's normal practically right away. And, if accidentally taken after pregnancy develops (as early as egg fertilization), there is no association with any risks to either mother or fetus. Source: Pharmacist Sorry for the long post!

There is a really disturbing motif of incest/molestation in some of the scenes of the actual haunted house (i.e. Steve talking about his uncle turning him gay and Jessica from the rave/date rape scene having a backstory of being molested by her dad). I'm surprised you guys didn't mention the kids who confront the cop about their objections concerning the rave scene and the AIDS scene. I think they briefly touched on it with the mention of her rejecting god. I'm just surprised this seen wasn't further elaborated on. Also, the writers room scenes kind of remind me of the "Six Days to Air" documentary about South Park.

22:25 That's extremely common in these sorts of circles. My mother finally admitted Harry Potter isn't evil/satanic/etc... after watching the movies, but she still insists that Pokemon, DND, etc... are all evil/satanic/etc... BTW, her comment was "Oh, this isn't that bad." Not one admission that she was wrong to throw away my books and VHS tapes, nor a single apology. I literally had to spend 10 years smuggling movies and books that had "magic" in them into the house (I lived at home after I finished high school), because I knew what she'd "learned" from friends who'd never read the material was complete nonsense and there was no way I was going to deprive myself of one of my favorite genres because my mother had drunk the koolaid.

+Kiara Smith Depends upon how "fluff bunny" the person is. XD Some people absolutely must have the colors the "spell" calls for without realizing that the visualization / intent and one's personal color association is more important in people who believe in that sort of thing. Technically, if one believes in that sort of thing, one could use any color for anything, but due to there being some pretty standard archetypal associations - things like white get used as a neutral/purity/cleansing color whereas red ends up for love/anger/vengeance. You could totally use black for purification, it's just that many people who get into New Age religions are more focused on the appearance of it all rather than the actual "principles" involved. There are mountains of differences between Slavic magic and Gardenian Wicca. Granted - it's all hokum - but whatever it takes to get that placebo effect. XD

Roberta Tallienne I was just providing examples of various forms of paganism. I'd say Gardenian Wicca in the 1960's with it's emphasis on Celtic traditions was probably the biggest "bump" in popularity in modern times( at least in the US ) to the resurgence in interest - which is why I noted it specifically. Would you prefer I have mentioned the Golden Dawn?

Has anyone ever actually been to one of these? I was about 12. My mom was a reporter for the newspaper, and she was doing a story about it, and I was allowed to go. It was mostly a drunk driving thing. At the end, you were allowed to choose which room you wanted to go to, heaven or hell. I chose heaven because I they were ministering everyone after they left the hell room. It was actually a pretty cool design with a lot of work put into decorations and costumes. They also, at Christmas, had an interactive walk through where you can travel to the nativity scene and pretend to be a follower of Jesus. My mom's job took me to some interesting places.

I grew up in a Pentecostal church and I went to a Hell House with my parents when I was 11 or 12 because the pastor of our specific church recommended it. My parents were horrified and we never went to one ever again. They're a terrible tool for scaring people into faith, which, if you're going to proselytize, is the worst reason for anyone to believe in God. As for the woman who was a rape victim... That's a very troubling catch-22 for me. Yes, it is a terrible practice to have people act out their real-life trauma as what can clearly become some kind of enabling practice that can become a substitute for actual therapy... but in the specific case of that woman, it was clearly the right thing for her, because it brought her to the place where she eventually got help for herself. We can't assume that she would have gotten help sooner without that experience, and we definitely can't use her unique experience as a justification for the practice, so... What do we do with it?

There are grand mal seizures, as well as pedi mal seizures. That boy WAS actually having a grand mal seizure. A grand mal is any seizure where your whole body seizes up and shakes that way. Some are more violent than others, of course. Pedi mal seizures look like the person is just sort of staring off into space with a blank look on their face. I am epileptic and get both kinds of seizures. While the seizures look scary, they are not painful whatsoever (unless you injure yourself, like falling down stairs because you seized up) and in almost all cases, will not cause any permanent damage, and there really isn't any need to call 911 or go to the hospital. If the person has a cluster of seizures, or doesn't come out of the seizure after a long time (10 mins is a LONG seizure), or is still confused and disoriented 10-15 mins after the seizure has ended, those are the only times that you have to worry about going to the hospital.
@TheRachaelLefler
@TheRachaelLefler 8 жыл бұрын
I've had a seizure once, idk if I'm epileptic or not. It was about 30 seconds of my sight going to flashing bright colors and temporary being unable to see, while my body kind of turned around and shook (luckily I was on my bed). I would have called it painless, even "fun" if it hadn't been so scary and unexpected. Interesting, to say the least. I was just wondering but how do you know if you have a petit mal seizure?
@RavynSkye617
@RavynSkye617 8 жыл бұрын
Rachael Lefler - I usually am not aware of either kind of seizure. I know because other people tell me, or I figure it out if like... I'm watching TV and suddenly things seems to jump around weirdly. Honestly, I don't even know most of the time I have a seizure, petit mal or grand mal. (Also, just realized my talk to text kept saying 'pedi' instead of 'petit' in my previous comment. >_

Jemalacane0 - They aren't. I've had them and they are not painful... in fact, you don't remember them at all. You are totally and completely unaware the whole time. Which I guess means that they COULD be painful but you have no memory of it later, so then, I guess it wouldn't matter if they were painful or not, since you will never remember the pain later anyway... Anyway, to me, someone who has had both petite mal and grand mal seizures, I can tell you that they are NOT painful to me, and in fact, I'm not aware of anything that happens during them.

As a rape survivor myself (and an atheist) it’s worth pointing out that rape is never really “condemned” in the Bible - it is, however, condoned in certain scenarios. So the whole “How do you know right from wrong without religion?” Guess what? If you’re a Christian, and you know rape is wrong? Congrats, you’re a decent person. Also, why ISN’T rape a big deal to these people?

At my school, they were planning on using blanks for school shooting drills. The idea made me shudder, but apparently they did preliminary drills with just the teachers on a work day. I assume that they would just shoot at the ceiling or something. They are considering doing it with students, and as much as I think it could help us with getting good at figuring out where the shooter is if there is a shooter (our school has had almost shootings [someone got caught day before telling people not to come to school that day a while ago, someone got caught writing plans and had guns, etc.], so our teachers really want us to be prepared if they don’t get caught beforehand). I honestly think it’s probably a good idea, but there needs to be a LOT of effort into safety.

I think the saddest part about situations like the one with the father of 4 is that they have the strength to continue and persevere within them from the start, but attribute it to a fiction that belittles them by calling them sheep and teaching them that they are inherently broken from birth. It's what a hate about those 12 step programs that are essentially conversion programs targeting those who are already compromised, they have the strength within them, but when they succeed they give all the credit to an imaginary person instead of themselves.

As to how dangerous shooting a gun loaded with blanks can be, google Jon-Erik Hexum. In 1984, the model and up and coming actor got restless during a breaking in the filming of his TV series and started playing around with a .44 Magnum that was loaded with blanks. He spun the cartridge, put it to his head, and pulled the trigger, ala Russian Roulette. The bullet didn't enter his head, but it had enough force to break off a piece of his skull and shove it into his brain. After several hours of surgery the handsome (hell, the man was gorgeous!) 26 year old was declared brain dead. His heart, corneas, kidneys, and some of his skin was used to save others lives before he was cremated. All because he didn't understand how dangerous a "blank" could be.
