Athena the Goddess of Wisdom and Crafts, was also known as the Goddess of Strategic warfare.
This is my second in a series of video essays about the Mature Feminine Archetypes, named for the Greek Goddesses, based on the book Goddess in Everywoman, by Jean Shinoda Bolen.
Maturity is a topic I discussed heavily in my videos on the male archetypes. Perhaps I was influenced by my own bias towards masculine maturity or my perceived lack of masculine maturity in the modern world. That Statement would then imply that the world is not short of Feminine Maturity. There are many examples of mature powerful Female characters in film and there is no God, or Goddess that better represents maturity better than Athena.

Wow… just wow. You have described me from head to toe. I was raised by my dad, I often find myself in conflict with feminist beliefs because I know the other side to the story and I’m always oveprepared for meeting with supervisors. I don’t get along with other Athenas though, we all have too strong personalities for each other 😅

The Athena archetype while she has does have good traits wisdom, intelligence, cleverness, leadership, and dominance. Like everyone else's, she has flaws as she not very emotional nor is she emotionally intelligence and can cause unintentional harm to those around her who supported her. She often values logically reasons instead of embracing new environments that might have different solutions that out of her familiar comfort zone. Athena is also very prideful despite moments of kindness, she not without pride, as Athena doesn't take to kindly of losing if you remember the weaving competition with Arachne, after depicting the gods flaws though a weaving art. Athena got angry and turn Arachne into a spider. In some stories Athena turn Arachne into a spider so Zeus can't rape her or that Athena got mad that a moral beat in her own skill set. While there are many different versions of this story the main point of this story, that Athena like many other gods is prideful losing to someone below her makes her competitive. The flaws of a Athena archetype are pride, competitiveness, inflexible, unfeeling, and selfishness.

Her, aphrodite and Persephone i always find interesting myth wise since they are 3 different versions of them that the ancient greeks worship. All the Athenas share similar flaws and traits that youve listed. I think i enjoy the war version the most simply because her and Ares are mirror images with the same flaws but with her more emotionless and logical while Ares is more hotheaded and reckless. Her the general while Ares is the soldier.

@@Kris-wo4pj That's remind me, their Roman counterparts. They're so different from each other too. Athena Roman counterpart is more of a scholar and teacher. And Ares Roman counterpart is more honorable and respected

Thanks Little Murder Machine 664, by the way great name. It amazed me when I stared this project how much better the Greeks were at crafting characters in myths then modern storytellers are at making characters compelling.. Also how they understood the value in flaws.

@@MinimumEffortMedia Everyone has flaws even the so called heroes in our stories. But our flaws are what makes us who we are. Aphrodite represent the good and bad side of love. She can be loving and sweet but can be vain and revengeful. Like love it can heal you or hurt you. Athena is smart and proud but ruthless and prideful. Ares is brave and driven but violence and has lack of control. Zeus....has a lot of flaws. Hera can be nice but also has a temper can be extremely violence and manipulated when anger. Hades is a loner who loves his wife? But can be???? Yeah I can't think of flaw for this guy. Only him and Hestia are the only ones who don't cause trouble.

There aren't many version of arachne's story, there is only one, and it comes from roman writer. No arachne story was ever written by any greek writer. and this "unfeeling, selfish, infexible" Athena is a nonsense portrayal of her. People only have mis represented and wrongly popularized the tales to have the opinion about her.

As a man, I can see myself in an Athena archetype (raised to be a good Warrior, having a thirst for knowledge as a Magician, looking to bring or preserve order as a King, and having a Lover energy inferior to the first three). I find a lot of my own story and self-development in this video. I also see clearly the characters of two of my best girlfriends : one being an Athena, the other an Artemis, and YES the are very, very different. ^^

Perhaps that is an element of Athena’s shadow. Overly self- important, self righteous, asserting dominance. One of the things I omitted from the easy was Athena living by the Golden Mean. Another way of saying being well balanced between extremes.

I disagree watching this it seems that Athena would never support a cause that she does not benefit from. Black women even some Black Men "Uncle Tom Stereotype" since birth are often expected to selfless hence the "Strong Black Woman" and "Mammy" stereotype. Athena benefits from a patriarchal society while Black Women have historically suffered under white patriarchy. This archetype more likely fits the white woman "Girl Boss" Archetype.

@@thandondlovu5392 Black women HAVE embodied the "Athena" archetype when it comes to supporting black male patriarchy though despite not benefitting from that either. So it's definitely possible for people to take on more shadow aspects of this archetype while not getting a direct benefit. Plus, patriarchy doesn't benefit most women to begin with.

Let’s see, off the top of my head. I borrowed a lot of clips from Elizabeth the golden age, Bombshell, Zero Dark Thirty, and Booksmart. If you haven’t seen them those are all great movies. I probably used other movies with Cate Blanchet too. If you want to know a specific movie give me the time code and I’ll let you know.
