This is my #pretty #little #girl #Athena.
I made a little mistake by gently touching a new pinfeather filled with nerves near the end of the video - you can see Athena's quick reaction. New pinfeathers are filled with nerves and are quite sensitive to touch. Some birds are not tolerant of even the slightest nudge or bump! it is very important to keep an eye on your bird's reaction.

What are pin feathers?
@k.daydreams_
@k.daydreams_ Жыл бұрын
@@brrr792 Do you see the little white, bright "tubes" that are being squished with the tweezers? That's pin feathers. Pin feathers usually happen during a birds molting season in spring. They are basically growing new feathers! When the pin feathers are ready you can remove the shell/tube (I think it's made auf keratin or so) and reveal the new feathers!

@@gwenetash They do! It's a great bonding experience if your bird trusts you enough to let you preen it! Though you must be careful and gentle when preening the pinfeathers, some pinfeathers may not be ready to be preened yet. You can usually see it when the pinfeathers have a darker, greyish color. While ripe pinfeathers are all white.

The birds gets new feathers all the time, mostly on changing of seasons, its like nails and hair for us humans, when such a feather grows anew its covered in some protective ... something. And it starts to itch them, on most their body, they will take care of that themselves, but on their head they cant.. so either they do scratch the heads of each other, or if they trust enough let a human do it. I however just scratched their heads with fingers, they loved it, in my case two cockatiels, albeit they were a love-pair, they both had their heads scratched by humans instead.

Hello! Welcome! No, these are not harmful to your bird :) and they can be left alone, although scratching their head is a good way to bond with them. If you want to know a little more information on these I made a video for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i36TZGN6r7qKqMU If your bird is shy, I recommend trying to spend some more time with them, even if it's just sitting near them while you're doing something else. Get them used to your presence. Slowly move your hand towards them, but stop moving the moment they look stressed out, or scared. Keep doing that every day and eventually your patience will be rewarded.

Usually budgies have 2 very large molts twice a year: once when their summer feathers come, and once when their winter plumage comes. It's a glorious mixture of dust, little down feathers floating around everywhere, with pinfeathers galore! But on occasion pinfeathers will pop up randomly to replace old feathers that dropped, so I probably do this once a month or so :) and only when the birds are kind enough to let me.

Those are the coating of pin feathers, essentially newly grown feathers usually found after moulting, once the feather has grown enough the coating needs to be removed, in the wild social birds would have either their mate or another bird help pull them out

@@MetronaJ cool thank you. The birds seem to like it. Funny, but I enjoy watching it too.

I think you should add an on-screen warning in your videos about those tools, one little slip-up can make birds go blind

Great question! It's the dead, protective sheath off the developed feather. You can learn more about it in detail here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i36TZGN6r7qKqMU

Haha how many budgies do you have? I used to put on some budgie noises for my budgies to yell at! I hope your budgies will eventually let you preen them too! But it also depends on the budgie too. Some boojers just like their privacy 😊 I had a few like that haha

@@pinfeathersgalore aww I have 4 now, one loves her pictures and will pose, she sometimes will perch on my finger and kiss my nose. The other 3 are treat me like their featherless flock member who must bring food, water and clean their cage 😂.
