This is not a ceremony. This is ART at its best form. I still get chills especially in the lighting of the flame. The way the cauldron essentially bows down to accept the flame, meaning that technology is and should be used only on serving humanity ... speechless

No other country could stage an unforgettable, unmatched, and unbeatable Opening Ceremony than its Original Birth Country in Greece. The artistic section reminded us that Greece gave birth to human knowledge such as Math, Sciences, Sculpture, and the beauty of the human body. This should had been Athens 1996 instead of Atlanta 1996, which is totally forgettable despite being the Centennial Games. Hope that when the Games reached its every 100th Year Anniversary, it should return to Greece like 2096, 2196, 2296, ..........

My grandfather died one day before the opening ceremony (12/8/2004). One of the last things he said to my grandmother was: "I am not worried much, I am just so sad that I will not manage to watch the Olympics in my own country". He wasn't sad to leave her (XD), he was sad he wouldn't be able to connect with his fellow Greeks during the games. That's how big of a deal this event was back home.

When Alexander the Great or goddesses like Athens and Nike (victoria in latin ) appeared for instance. But did you know that, after the pregnant woman stepped down to the floor at the end, all performers stopped and the procession lighting was turned off, so most paying spectators in the stadium saw the procession only on television? @Rayan Sharara You forgot the Greek empire headed by Alexander the Great my boy. Pythagoras actually copied the Egyptians in mathematics, but from the Egyptian basis that Pythagoras reformulated a new concept of mathematics that would give rise to Persian algebra from Macedonian influences. Mesopotamia did have its own mathematics, but nothing compared to the mathematics of Egyptian origin represented by the new Pythagorean theorems because it is much more sophisticated, compact and adaptable to new mathematical concepts. Why Western civilization would be nothing without the contribution of Greece, since it was from the Greek empire that primordial civilization learned about such a sophisticated Greek culture both in Asia and in the Roman empire, that from these, the ancient world was reborn to be the world known today!

Can we take some time to appreciate that this was filmed in 1080p HD back in 2004 with cameras suspended from cables over the stadium. Things we take for granted now but pretty impressive tech 16 years ago. Who could even afford an HD flat screen TV back then?

@Rayan Sharara nothing new, it has been happening for years now, it is called Wheather Modification Program , applied in Greece since at least 15 years ago, mainly for agricultural reasons . I know that for sure because my first cousin used to be pilot in one of these planes . Actually , I had heard that it was also applied in the 1980 Olympic Games by the Soviets.

From then on, when I'm teaching Greek History, I always use the Clepsydra portion of the Ceremony to visually present Greece to my students.
