I live abroad and whenever I return to Athens it saddens me to see that the restaurant with a the traditional motif in decoration combining traditionally cooked food are steadily diminishing and already start to become fairly rare, as they give way to fast food and those restaurants cooking fancy modern supposedly trendy imported recipes which are more interested in presentation and with the convenience of relatively simplified cooking methods instead of the over-prolonged and elaborate cooking expected for those traditional Greek dishes. I mean the kind of restaurants that the chef spends more time decorating the plate, than cooking the food. Watching this video also saddens me because in this video traditional Greek cuisine that our ancestors used to eat is regrettably forgotten. For example foreign visitor don’t know what they are missing if they have not tasted the traditional cuisine cooked by Ms Rania Karatzeni owner the restaurant named Oinomageireio Epirus located in the Varvakio central meat market of Athens. Frankly I rather go to a restaurant that focus on elaborate family-style traditional Greek cuisine, instead of those restaurants that xenomaniac Greeks love enjoying the ‘’trendy ambiance’’ LOL and the artistic presentations of the food served into fancy futuristic dishes using peculiarly styled cutlery, which are all more important to them than the flavor of the food … LOL

I agree kind of, but I don't believe it will get lost, because even the new generation still wants the traditional old mother made food. This is what makes us! Greece is unique and will not get lost, we never die :-D But I also agree that somehow a lot of people wants to be like the others, and the danger about that is, that they are trying to make everything the same. The whole world to be same? Please don't! For eg Cyprus, Limassol now are building Skyscrapers and wants to be like Dubai, Singapore, USA cities, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur etc. All the same, I find it wrong. No uniqueness anymore and the culture dies.

The ancient Greek gave so much to the world not the least mainly to the Arabs and Muslims, and Middle East (which you can see it in many aspects of their culture to this day) which they gave back in return to Europe through Andalusia (Spain). If the Romans were once the heart of the world, the Greek were the mind. ❤

Wow all that awful vandalism and ruin of private property with all that ugly graffiti on the walls does truly say alot about the other side of Athenian culture. From a highly civilized culture in literature, mathematics, science and fine arts that Greece is respected for, including all the contributions that the intellectuals of the past in Greece have given the rest of the world in inspiration and accomplishments, one would be inclined to believe that Athenian youth's would be more consciously aware of their envirionment. Without a doubt some of that graffiti vandalism resembles any third world country in the americas. It appears that, that type of human behaviour is tolerated in all parts of the world now and accepted as culture and a norm of living standards. Its a sign of the times one could guess, with globalization and all that globalization entails. Other than that Athens appears to be like any other country in the world by having nice tourist areas for those who can afford it and ordinary decadence in the less fortunate areas. Still much of the Athenian places shown in this video are remarkably admirable to the ancients legacy of the beautiful Greece that resides in one's heart and mind.

i appreciate your effort but I am struck by an astonishing lack of detail about foods, costs, things to actually do. I saw only a few kitschy looking art samples, the nightlife looked lifeless and empty. There are just superficial shots of restaurants etc, what are the costs of hotels, restaurants, transport. Such a dearth information except in the ad for your sponsor. And you seem to consider it a virtue to have abandoned traditional foods in favor of tiny spectacles of culinary coppery. It may be “cool” but it just seems rather dead.

That's a nice video showing Athens for how it is nice and interesting, artistic and trendy away from the touristy areas and shops. However I think it would be even better if it was shot during winter. People go to London or Paris or Berlin and Vienna and Budapest in winter but for some reason they think Athens is only a summer destination. The Acropolis, restaurants and bars are just fine during winter too. Athens is not a small island resort that closes off season.

@@8eck We Greeks like the Italians, no matter what went on in the past, countless times. We conquered Southern Italy, they conquered Greece, the Schism which created a chasm we were trying to bridge for over a century, the Venetians destroying parts of Greece, the Crusaders which were supposedly our friends pillaged our city, Constantinople, twice, which essentially opened the door to the Turks, many of us went in Corsica after the fall, also, again in parts of Italy, WWII et cetera, but still... Athens is a mini New York in the sense, it's a city that never sleeps, BUT, much friendlier without crime. In case an Italian liked it, he fits right in perfectly. None of us could tell he/she isn't Greek. We're also renowned for our hospitality, openness, socially extrovert behavior. It's no wonder an Italian could see it as his home. The opposite is true when I visited Italy as a Greek. Countless times thought I haven't even changed country. But sometimes I felt it 'cause I couldn't even see an Italian in some places. Hence, Italy becomes a little closer society with all the immigration and other issues. We took drastic measures to combat it, successfully thus far. We also kept almost all of our traditions. Most come from our Byzantine Empire, a few come from Ancient Greece. I've seen a video here on YT, Italians complain they become an amorphous mass without traditions. Perhaps, that's why he liked it. We have a town full of Italians. Believe it or not, I didn't know it when I visited. Only in a cafeteria speaking with the locals I learned this fact. I'm trying to give you a wider context as to why an Italian might like it.

Living 4 years in Cyprus as expat from Azerbaijan, and visited Athens one day for my birthday - I changed my opinion about Greek culture. Many my Greek friends(from Greece) say dont go to Athens and bla bla. It was kind of shock to me and my friends that while Greek Cyprus s very calm nice relax and chill, and then we go to Athens and boom, we see first time greek hard core urbanization. Seriously, I fall in love with Athens, I dont know why. seems it has very surprising, unexpected, edgy vibe.

No it’s not same language, okay we have lot of word that come from Ancient Greek or some new Greek word that are from ancient time but that doesn’t mean it’s same believe me if Lean Ancient Greek you probably will not understand almost anything in new Greece language

@@parisPONTOS If you re-read my statement you'd see that I said "obviously not the same as the ancient". However, having said that, the basic structure of the language has not changed, as one can see in the Greek alphabet, making it very easy for a modern day Greek speaker to read an ancient text with relative ease.
