I cannot even fall asleep lying on my back. I tried to force it a couple of times on weekends and I lay awake for the whole night. I generally sleep in a hybrid of the two "worst" positions, meaning I lay flat on my belly, head turned to either left or right and having the leg on the side my face is turned to positioned as in the second worst mentioned sleeping position. I am now almost 40 years old, have been sleeping like that for my entire life and am glad that I have no issues whatsoever, because otherwise I would not know what to do.

"Pillow Spooner" with one arm under pillow, and "praying mantis": I cannot fall asleep easily in any other positions than these two. And find it difficult to fall asleep with silence. I need either a podcast, or some storytelling audio. Very very low volume, barely being able to listen to it. I grew up in a house were there were "paranormal phenomena" quite frequently, and also, the AM radio was on the whole time. Could be this, not sure.

I've had lumbar issues for decades. Sleeping on my stomach is the only way I can sleep. However, my pillow is not under my chest. My pillow is only under my head. Also, is a feather pillow, which is very adjustable, so can keep my head relatively low. Foam pillows are too thick. Also, the knee on the side I'm facing, is slightly bent and the opposite arm is at my side.
@Sagatta32
@Sagatta32 Ай бұрын
Do what's comfy and sound! When I have lost sleep and wanna nap I always wanna lie on my chest. However - don't twist the neck too far. I hold up an arm near/under the head to prevent twist/give slight support. Normally I do a combination of fetal/side and chest position. I'll actually lie completely on my left shoulder(folded in), belly and partially the left arm. (my back is large, T-form) Kind of giving myself a semi hug. Cons - Tight trap shoulder and may damage some nerve in my left arm. Pros - feels fantastic, great airways/flow and supports the back and spine. I am regularly, daily doing shoulder work/rehab/stretches to mitigate that downside. One of the most important ones is simply holding up two dumbbells in a max stretch in a passive shoulder press. Let the weight press down your traps for a deep stretch. You can also simply sit up straight and literally press/drag down your shoulder with the other arm for the stretch. Worst position for me is the back. It can work but rarely the whole night. Bad airway/flow and the back is crushed. I may wanna have the legs up a bit as described in this video to give more of a flat back.

When I was a toddler, I discovered that I usually have nightmares when I sleep on my back. So, I started sleeping on my side. To this day, I usually can't sleep very well or very long on my back. I side-sleep with one knee pulled up. Yes, this can cause problems. I use two additional pillows (not including the head pillow) to alleviate the problems: 1. I use a small plank-shaped lumbar support pillow for my mid-back/ribs. 2. A pillow for the extended knee to keep the hips lined up straight. 3. Make sure the head-pillow is neither too tall nor too short for the neck to also align with the rest of the spine. Sometimes I'll use folded clothes for the pillow that is too flat to raise it a bit higher. I think this works because my back does get tight without these measures taken. It sucks because I feel like its high maintenance. I can sometimes sleep on my back but it STILL often causes nightmares, snoring (often loud, even waking myself up), and also unwanted Freudian dreams.

Good stuff overall! I will say, I've fallen asleep with my arm over my head before. I woke up, moved, and thought I was being attacked as something flopped down onto my face, which thing I proceeded to throw as hard as I could only to realize it was my dead-numb arm that I couldn't feel 😂 I'll also add that while sleeping on my stomach is most comfortable (short-term), having your head cranked to one side or the other to breathe causes far worse than "muscle imbalances." It actually cuts off blood flow to the brain. I didn't realize this until I went to a chiropractor, where I learned that my sleeping position was causing the headaches that made my eyes feel like they were about to explode from their sockets. I was also told this shortens overall lifespans. Lastly, side sleeping is also a no-go for me. Without perfectly stuffing 20 pillows in just the right positions at just the right angle, it'll wreck your posture in so many ways. You're having to fight gravity in a direction the body isn't made to for prolonged periods, and it affects so many areas. Jeff covered most of these, but having a small rolled towel or pillow under your side is a must to offset the sway in the lumbar spine, which can lead to scoliosis-like issues. Hope this helps someone.

I know I should be sleeping on my back but I can't fall asleep until I turn on my side. I've been trying to sleep on my back for as far as I can remember but the pattern is the same every night: lie on my back wide awake trying unsuccessfully to fall asleep hour after hour - giving up around 2 or 3 in the morning and turning on my side - instantly fall asleep on my side and sleeping until the 6am alarm goes off - struggling through the day on just 3 or 4 hours sleep. Simple question: how can I fall asleep on my back???

I love how this video assumes that if I fall asleep in a certain position, I stay that way for 6-8 hours. I usually fall asleep on my side and end up waking up with my legs contorted and up against a wall, half my body hanging off the bed and my arms somehow finding themselves in a position that should probably not be physically possible.

I'd also like to add a strong recommendation that people start using an orthopedic keyboard that allows your hands to be spread apart from one another about shoulder length and get one that has the keys cemetrical instead of diagnal the best keyboard by far is the Kinesis Advantage2 Ergonomic keyboard that has the keys in these deep holes and your wrists can rest comfortably with your hands down instead of up which causes stress and can lead to arthritis/carpel tunnel. Likewise, having your hands apart from one another at shoulder length you put less stress on your shoulders and back. If you can get the keyboard made in bamboo even better because it's eco-friendly. The only issue is that it's wired and it's not cheap but it's worth it. Another drawback is you have to learn how to type from scratch and it may take up to 2 weeks to adjust to typing with your fingers aligned differently from what you're use to. Ergonomic keys allows for the fingers to function naturally up and down instead of crossing them over. Also this keyboard allows more practical uses for your thumb instead of your weakest finger the pinky. Your thumb is stronger and having it make use to more keys than just the spacebar becomes useful and you put less strain on your pinky allowing it to just move up and down. You can do a little experiment to feel the difference having your arms shoulder length apart hands at your sides wrists down instead of up and air type with your fingers moving up and down instead of across. You'll notice the difference even if it does feel a little weird at first.

One comment about sleeping position on LEFT or RIGHT side. The most healthy in this case is to sleep on your left side due to "construction" of your bowels. Sleeping on your left side you preventing liquids from pancreas coming out to your empty stomach. By the way, form of your stomach is same more designed to sleep on left side because everythig in it easyly goes to the next portions of your bowels and "prepared" during night for the morning extraction. So, if you sleep on your side, do it ONLY on LEFT SIDE.

Something I didn't see mentioned: there is evidence, suggesting that sleeping on the side reduces the risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The reason is that the brain is getting "cleaned" while asleep and it gets "cleaned" significantly better when sleeping on your side, compared to sleeping on your back. Some pathways get restricted when sleeping on your back or something... idk, I'm not a medical professional, but it is worth googling.

But after watching so many different video experts, I've come back repeatedly to you for a problem I never realized I had. My shoes wear terribly on both outer rear heals, but much more on the right. I hate sleeeping on the back. I could never fall asleep like that especialy if my hands are up like that because of the blood doesn't get up there and they start to tingle till I can't feel my hands anymore and then I wake up.

Me: walking around. Jeff: walking around is great and all to get your blood circulation going, but have you considered walking on your hands once in a while because you are putting too much strain on your legs.

Damn. The best one, laying on your back, is the one where I snore the loudest. Any thoughts on how to tame that?

I experience the best on my back but unfortunately, I snore like a truck and end up disturbing my wife's sleep. I've tried everything and nothing has worked I've resigned to sleeping on my side.

When I was a kid, teachers told us that you can swallow your tongue in the night, if you sleep on your back, because it might fold back on itself. 😮😵. Is that false then?
