I see a lot of people arguing that Atlético can not be refered to as an underdog because they are spending big money on players like João Felix just like the other big clubs do. But for me personally, Atléticos image is not defined by the money they spent on the transfermarkt but in the way how they compete with their rivals on the pitch. They trigger passion in their players and make sure everyone understands that it takes hard work to win a game. While Marcos Llorente did not make Real Madrids first team, possibly because he was not glamorous enough, he is now one of the key players for Atlético with is athleticism and fighting spirit. Or just look at Luis Suarez who Barca thought of as an ageing player who lost a step, he instantly became an impact player for Atlético due to his desire to win and proving people wrong. So for me, what distinguishes Atletico from the other big clubs, is their willingness and their pride in working harder and more passionate than everyone else. Definitely atletico has moved from that image of an underdog club and a club of the humble. They have the highest payed coach in all of football, they have one of the biggest transfer in recent years with Joa Felix and each transfer window they are now a heavy contender on paying big money.

Fair point. However simeone took a pay cut recently and earns around 12-15 million now (Cannot remember the exact figure). Joao felix was bought with money that came in from the griezmann deal. If I remember correctly the club have been selling quite heavily these past few years. Since Simeone took over the club have bought players worth 1.17 billion however atletico have also sold players worth 1.12 billion in that same time frame (transfermarkt). I do believe that the squad is simply being reinvested into. If Joao felix was bought it is because the club also sold a solid atletico star. Many people criticize atletico on not being an underdog anymore, and that is fair, however we simply do not have the financial backing of many of the football giants around to not being called an underdog! We did mindlessly join the ESL, and that is perhaps because we really needed the money to keep floating with the elites. It was a terrible yet completely predictable decision. Maybe the owners had the best intentions for the club in mind or maybe they were motivated by greed (cerezo and Gil seem shady). But the fact is that we are simply not big enough brand to compete with the biggies and perhaps depend on competition money and player sales to offset that. And of course, el cholo's brilliance. Right now, I am enjoying the "suffering" the club puts me through every year (this club has fetishized this word, God help us) maybe in years to come we will not be the underdogs anymore and that will be a new atletico. But not yet.
