Hey there! Here some thoughts by a fan of your channel: I do not agree that an event organiser can own only “the right to a name or symbol”. An event organiser can also own venues and decide almost freely what can and cannot be done inside those venues, including what can and cannot be filmed/recorded. Consequently, an event organiser can ensure that it owns all images and videos taken/made inside of those venues (copyrights and trademark protection are not always applicable to those images, but you can create other forms of intellectual property protection). Moreover, the event organiser can decide more or less whatever it wants concerning the criteria that athletes must meet in order to participate in the competitions, and therefore control their behaviour, even their commercial one! A point definitely worthy of analysis is the limit to this power of the event organiser with regards to the commercial freedom of the participants (see the decision by the German Cartel Office on 27.02.2019 granting German athletes further advertising opportunities during the Olympic Games). Side note: I was a bit disappointed that you didn’t mention another gem of ambush marketing: the campaign by Dr Dre to advertise his Beats headphones during the 2012 London Olympics by simply sending to the athletes free headphones with the respective country flag, thus achieving that many athletes were seeing using them before their competitions (e.g. Phelps before winning 6 medals...). Amazing content as always. Cheers!

I would also go back to 92 olympics - Michael Jordan. MJ and Nike are synonymous with each other, and Jordan attending the olympics with the Dream Team was huge. Everyone knew he was covering the logo with the flag which ironically made the logo more obvious and bad in a cool way. (Jordan and Nike did this before in the NBA when his shoes were banned and the fine became the cheapest advertising campaign ever!)

@@SIRTACONATOR007they didn't ban his shoes, the colourway for them was banned, so he had to pay a fine of 5,000 dollars every time he wore them, which Nike paid each time for him. The Jordan Rules were created by the Bad Boy Detroit Pistons to prevent Jordan from scoring, brutally beating him down every time he entered the paint (the inner circle of the opponent's hoop).

At 2012 London games, McDonald's rights to sell fries were so exclusive that a diner that served food to contractors during preparations of the opening ceremony was forced to stop selling chips. People got quite upset and after a week they brought the chips back but only allowed with a meal. I confirm.

Fun fact: business logos used to be prohibited on Olympic uniforms to "preserve the amateur integrity of sport". This was back when professional athletes were also prohibited from participating. That is why Jim Thorpe had his medals taken away - he had allegedly played in a professional football game.

The Football Medal Ceremony on Tokyo 2020 was a great example of this. The Brazilian team did not wear the tracksuit by PEAK, and wore the Nike match jersey. The Brazilian comitee went crazy (rightfully) saying it's a disrespectful with the other sports since everyone might lose their sponsorship over a dozen of spoiled players

Sure, exclusive sponsorship opportunities helped LA generate revenue from hosting the Olympics, but it was also the first city that didn't have to build new arenas and facilities in order to host the olympics. That fact was, in part, because hosting the Olympics had become so expensive in the modern age that many other countries removed their bid.

They give a look behind the scenes of the Olympics showing their facilities and personal time plus the competition behind the scenes and prep. Most have done hauls of the swag because free stuff is cool and that's why the swag that's being shown on their social media is probably the best marketing and it's not the same all across the Olympics because certain countries teams have particular brands that gave them things. For example Oakley gave US athletes, at least the ones I have seen, like 5 different pairs of sunglasses at least one athlete is doing a giveaway for one pair of sunglasses.
